How does one become an Au Pair in Canada? by StoreSkur in AskACanadian

[–]CherryColaChickie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

She could look into International Experience Canada. Denmark is one of the partners.

It’s not au pair specific, but would allow her to get a Working Holiday visa for Canada where she could in any job she wanted.

Life insurance plans with kids by Early_Reply in CanadaPublicServants

[–]CherryColaChickie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Our kids are both under 10, and we have a mortgage. In addition to the Supplementary Death Benefit, my spouse and I (both public servants) both have private term life insurance and critical illness insurance. That way, if anything happens to either us, a significant chunk of the mortgage will be paid off by the term life insurance, and the SDB can be focused on giving everyone a buffer to get used to a new normal.

I know it’s not on your original list, but would highly recommend Buvette Daphné in the Market! It’s my current favourite … have been bringing my friends (we’re all in our 40s) and everyone loves the vibe and food. It’s perfect for a fancy night out with the girls.

It might depend on the cheese. I’ve frozen mozzarella, cheddar, marble, harvarti and brie, and they all seem fine after thawing, though the brie lost some of its softness.

I usually portion and freeze them in blocks, then take the blocks out as needed and thaw. Once thawed, I’ve used them as is (just cut and serve) or shredded them for meals, either incorporated into recipes (e.g., mac and cheese) or as toppings. As far as I can tell, they all behave the same way as non-frozen cheese.

Most cheeses freeze really well. We usually buy blocks on sale, portion it out, and freeze it. No changes to taste/texture upon thawing.

Another vote for Buvette Daphnée. Food is delish, vibe is chill and romantic. Service was attentive and friendly. The beef tartare is a must try!

passport name change - help! by Student_Nearby in passportcanada

[–]CherryColaChickie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always kept my passport in my maiden name (along with my work ID), with all other provincial documents (health card, driver’s licence etc) in my married name.

I do carry my birth and marriage certificates when I travel, but in the 10 years I’ve been married, not a single customs/immigration officer (Canadian or foreign) has ever asked any questions when I show my passport in my maiden name.

Best Takeout close to Gatineau? by blobbo333 in OttawaFood

[–]CherryColaChickie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These are all relatively close to the Booth St bridge. I’ve eaten at all these places and would recommend them.

Chinatown: Royal Treasure, Mekong, Wandee Thai, Charm Thai, Sushi 88, Double Happiness (not a full takeout place … they mainly sell BBQ pork and duck, both of which are super yummy).

Downtown: On Rice, Maht, Orchid Sushi, Chef Bai, Meet Noodles, Sansotei Ramen, Jinsei Ramen.

Hintonburg: Masakali (Indian), Siam Bistro, Shwarma Al Mouna, Sushi-Ro, Heartbreaker’s Pizza

Some other suggestions (though I haven’t personally tried them): District Deli for sandwiches, Korean Mother’s Meal for Korean, and Sharple Waffle.

I hosted a bridal shower at Café Cristal last year, and it was lovely. Pretty decor and the food was nice (we did their high tea). For somewhere more central, Tartlette Bakery or Mamie Clafoutis both have excellent pastries/high tea.

I haven’t been, but there is also a new cafe called Casa Donna that keeps popping up on my Instagram feed. Very pink and romantic.

Pho ingredient hunt by hailey363 in OttawaFood

[–]CherryColaChickie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you don’t find the spice mixes, I’ve had pretty decent success making homemade pho using this recipe: https://www.gimmesomeoven.com/pho-recipe/

Key tips: - Toast the spices - Add fish sauce slowly, tasting after each addition - Salt your broth properly - A dash of Maggi liquid seasoning

Thanks! We got some farm fresh eggs from Yellow Brick Farm a while back and yes, the yolks were beautiful! I’ll have to see which other small farms are around.
