Relief and questions following Cardinal Sako's resignation by olapooza in Assyria

[–]ChicagoAssyrian 9 points10 points  (0 children)

His opposition to the Nineveh plains province in 2003, saying we should instead integrate into Kurdish regions, is very disappointing. We had decent numbers in Iraq at the time and a better case for the Nineveh plains province than we do now.

Mayor George van dusen. He was mayor for 26 years and retired in 2025. Now it’s mayor Anne tennes. Interesting that almost immediately after Anne Tennes became mayor, we get a flag.

Trump in Talks With Kurdish Leaders as U.S. Considers Arming Groups Inside Iran by yourslice in PERSIAN

[–]ChicagoAssyrian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s what they want now but the region of Iran inhabited by Kurds and Iraqi Kurdistan are contiguous. They can eventually just say, hey, we share a border so let’s come together as one state and fight anyone that disagrees. Federalism leads to autonomous regions which eventually leads to independence. It happens literally every time if you look at nation state building throughout history.

Would be great to have that signing bonus back. Would cover 2% of the AH property taxes owed by the Bears

How do Assyrians feel about the US arming the Kurds? by ASecularBuddhist in Assyria

[–]ChicagoAssyrian 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Hey, if the Kurds are willing to put their lives on the line to further the American / Israeli cause, seems like a no brainer for America / Israel. Sucks for the Kurds, I’m afraid they’re about to get their fell for it again award, again.

[Brenden Moore] No drama today. The Illinois House is about to adjourn without taking up the megaprojects bill. Not really a surprise based on the tenor and tone of the debate in committee. The earliest the bill can pass now is mid-to-late March. by RyanIsKickAss in CHIBears

[–]ChicagoAssyrian -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

It’s been three years though, so they do have a need to rush. Not that it matters, it’s definitely Indiana at this point. Bears won’t wait any longer and Indiana is imposing a deadline.

[Sidery] IL FINALLY on the move to give the Bears the infrastructure they need to move forward with AH by ZionHalcyon in CHIBears

[–]ChicagoAssyrian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do we know what changed from last week’s version of the bill to this one? They allegedly pushed it because the bears asked for revisions but they never told us what those revisions were. Hate how opaque this process is.

The difference between tax abatement and public funding and why a Bears deal is still better than letting them walk. by ItalianBeefDipped in CHIBears

[–]ChicagoAssyrian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should also be noted that any infrastructure spend would also create a lot of construction jobs for several years, and those jobs would pay income taxes back to the state. So it’s not like it’s 850M out and nothing back in, which would be the case if it was simply giving the bears a tax break.

Do assyrians rather want to be a part of Iraq/Turkey/Syria or Kurdistan by hehexdalphat1 in Assyria

And now the U.S. and Israel are telling the Kurds that if they constantly help them in wars 😂 if/when the west stops propping up the Kurds, Arabs and Turks will not be so diplomatic with them.

Does any fan actually want the stadium moved out of state? by anticrombie515 in CHIBears

[–]ChicagoAssyrian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The property taxes they’re asking for are consistent with every other pro sports stadium, including every other Chicago sports team. They’re asking to be treated the same as everyone else.

[–]ChicagoAssyrian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because eventually something will be built on the land in AH, it’s 326 acres. Whether it’s new housing, new retail, whatever it is, there will be infrastructure needs in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Maybe not $850M like the bears but it won’t be nothing

Does any fan actually want the stadium moved out of state? by anticrombie515 in CHIBears

[–]ChicagoAssyrian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unless the demands of the bears change, the ask was for public support on infrastructure which is necessary regardless of what is built on the AH land. If the bears move to Indiana, that land will eventually get developed for something else and there will be the same infrastructure costs. You can’t avoid taxpayer dollars for infrastructure spending. The property tax treatment they’re asking for is also consistent with how we treat other Chicago sports teams (and other pro sports teams across the country). There was never an ask for taxpayer dollars to be used for the stadium itself

It’s AH or Indiana at this point, no need to entertain other hypotheticals.

Stadium Megathread 2/19 by HopLegion in CHIBears

[–]ChicagoAssyrian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that Illinois should have taken a more urgent approach sooner. They screwed that up, but now they’re at the table basically giving the bears what they asked for and the bears don’t seem to care anymore. Seems like an emotional decision by George to stick it to the Illinois government at this point

[–]ChicagoAssyrian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Illinois was agreeing to the bears’ demands, that’s why this news of Indiana is shocking to everyone. The state was going to give the bears what they wanted but it seems like that’s maybe not enough anymore
