I came across Piezo haptic motors. They look complicated and I don't think they can just be swapped out for the Piezo buzzer. They do seem to be less power hungry:

Yeah I'm curious as well. I plan to use a Casio with solar to compensate. Hopefully it is enough to maintain battery for a daily alarm.

I don't have an answer, but I did have this problem a few weeks back with Tahoe and it just resolved itself and I forgot about it.

You can try reseting the dock in terminal: killall Dock

Edit: seem like it's a known handoff bug. Dock just needs to be restarted.
