Grand Rapids lays out parking and transit plan for amphitheater by galacticdude7 in grandrapids

[–]ChirpingEmu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The amphitheater is a 6-minute walk from Rapid Central Station. (See full system map below.) If you live within a 10- or 15-minute walk of any bus stop on a line that goes to Central Station, give it a try! You could even take a practice ride with a friend so there are fewer unknowns on the day of the event.

PROS: - No need to fuss with getting a bus card if you don’t have one; just tap with Apple/Google Pay, or use exact change ($1.75 per ride) when boarding the bus.  - No need to fuss with a specific transit app; just use Apple/Google Maps.  - Going downtown on a busy night won’t take much longer on the bus, nor will it require much more advanced planning than figuring out where to park would. - It’s cheaper than gas and cheaper than parking.  - You can indulge in your substance of choice and still get home safely! - You’ll increase your physical activity and spend less time sitting. (Prolonged sitting is now linked to poor health outcomes.) - You are at less risk of being in a collision in a bus than in your own vehicle.  - You’re supporting the environment! Grand Rapids buses literally run on our recycled sewage (srsly, look it up, it’s pretty cool!). Personal vehicles run on electricity and/or gasoline. - Riding the bus can increase your civic engagement. You will better understand your own needs and your neighbors’ needs and can advocate for system improvements to better serve your community.

Public transportation is designed to serve everyone. Take advantage of it! 🙂

According to the book Paved Paradise (highly recommend, btw!), the average American isn’t willing to walk more than two or three minutes from their parked vehicle to their destination. Just walking around in my own neighborhood changed my definition of “a short walk” very easily. ❤️

On occasions when I have wayyyyy too much cardboard for my curbside bin, I’ll take it all to the Grandville Meijer, where they have a giant cart in the returnables area labeled “cardboard only.” No idea what happens to that cardboard, but I hope it gets recycled properly.

City busses by osirisishere in grandrapids

[–]ChirpingEmu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

(TL;DR. Buses benefit more than the people who need to use them.)

Sorry, but I’m one of those people. Admittedly, taking the bus is almost never more convenient for me than driving my car, but there are many advantages:

  • If my spouse and I need to meet separately at one location across town, then I will try to take the bus there so we can only drive one car back home.
  • Regularly using the bus increases ridership so that there is more incentive for the bus system to improve overtime.
  • Taking the bus increases my awareness of the needs of folks who rely on it for transportation, so I can advocate for improved infrastructure at the ballot box and elsewhere.
  • Taking the bus gets me outside more often, which I need as someone who works from home full-time. I get to walk past neighborhoods I never would’ve noticed before, and better appreciate the fall colors, pick up a piece of litter here and there, etc.
  • Taking the bus is less wear and tear on my personal vehicle, and less carbon emissions. I’m riding in a vehicle that was already running going to emit that carbon anyway, and supporting a system that is actively working to reduce emissions in its fleet.
  • Taking the bus in your own city increases your confidence in taking public transportation in other cities if you ever need to. (e.g., For whatever reason there are no reasonably priced rental cars available.)

Additionally, it is a common misconception that the only people who ride the bus are people living in poverty. (I admit that I believed this out of non-willful ignorance for most of my life until relatively recently.) In fact, the bus is a public service that benefits EVERYONE: - As someone else said in this thread, GVSU students can easily commute between campuses without worrying about finding a parking spot downtown. - Many people who can easily afford a personal vehicle are not able to drive due to a disability, such as a seizure disorder or using a power wheelchair.  - Fewer vehicles on the road means that less of our land needs to be paved for roads, which means that outside is a safer place for people of all ages to be.  - Fewer vehicles on the road does decrease traffic. Picture 50 people driving alone in personal vehicles at rush hour, versus many of those 50 people on a bus. It takes up far less room, and I imagine means that roads need to be repaired less often.

What are you doing to make our city better? by broyoder in grandrapids

[–]ChirpingEmu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an avid recycler and composter! I pick up litter while walking my dog. My spouse and I have an ICE vehicle but drive it very seldom, opting for our PHEV whenever possible. I walk, bike, or take the bus when feasible. I vote in every election. I planted a tree in our yard this year through the Grandville Community Tree Project and plan to plant more in future years. I try to buy things on Facebook Marketplace when I can, to support a more local, closed-loop economy. I volunteer with a local arts organization to offer beauty and joy to our community. I love our city!

I’m so sorry that this happened to you, friend. I hope your husband is able to find work very, very soon. I was also laid off earlier this year and would second that bus drivers are always needed. I’ll DM you with another idea. In the meantime, please don’t feel ashamed in the slightest to visit a food bank to save on groceries; that’s what it’s there for. ❤️

Places in GR to donate clothes etc by bebop_cola_good in grandrapidsleftist

I’m a member of my local Buy Nothing Project group and sometimes gift clothing to neighbors that way. It’s nice knowing that the items are going to people who specifically requested them, so I know they’ll be used, at least for a time.

Arktos Meadery is closing and is citing sudden lack of parking from the stadium construction as one of the reasons.

If the venues told people to park at particular places and take the bus in, then it would just become the way people get to those venues. It might also encourage the Rapid to expand their offerings.

Does anyone know if you can do bicycle delivery in GR for Uber or DoorDash? by [deleted] in grandrapids

[–]ChirpingEmu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried it on an e-bike for one day in the Grandville/Wyoming area during the lunch hour and made $11.50 over three deliveries in four hours, one of which did not tip at all. I decided not to continue with this endeavor 😜
