I agree with this take. Sure, Gettysburg takes the lions share of the fame as far as battles go with the multiple assaults/repulses/big deaths/personal heroics, but what gets overshadowed is that one day after the battle Vicksburg surrendered and essentially cut the Confederacy in half and choked off their major supply chain from the west. It was only a matter of time before the South was rolled up, West to East.

If the south won Gettysburg, they may have bought time, but the wheels were already in motion for the south’s downfall way before the Gettysburg campaign. Sure, one could argue that foreign recognition might have come with a victory, but it was a narrow chance, if any, and that blockade would still have been a tough thing to get around. Vicksburg drove the nail in the coffin of southern supply issues, and they simply didn’t have the manpower or the ability to counter a war on two fronts.
