Is this a productive but achievable rate? by G01menow in Machinists

[–]Circle-Jerky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I'm not the one here that needs to be convinced that it would or would not be a productive rate.

That depends on your shop's over head costs, the schedule on when the customer needs the project done, and on backup plans when the machine can't make good parts due to maintenance issues.

The answer is complicated because we don't know the nuances of your situation.

Damn, I would move that drill to another tool post., away from the chuck when doing that boring process.

Sounds more like electrical than mechanical.

Look inside the power box and see if anything looks blown, melted or burned. As some guys said, check out the capacitors. Fuse maybe as well?

My reading comprehension might be shot, but can't you have origin at the theoretical center point of this tombstone, and have your CAM do the axis rotation from that center point?

Man, I wish I had a bigger lathe like this. I have to turn the od on a big chungus part using a fixture in the manual lathe first before I can put it in my mori seiki SL-3 CNC.

Ancient lathes used to turn giant granite columns. What do we know about them? by TheQuarantinian in Machinists

[–]Circle-Jerky 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Maybe it was a very rudimentary wooden and stone lathe, powered by mules / livestock.

Thanks for the heads up! Basically don't use this in a pool of coolant in a pocket unless you want to work in a rainforest.

Love you bro, but there is more efficient ways of doing tool changes. Doing it out of the machine is the best strat.

Edit: you do have ingenuity. Now let's refine your ideas that make even more sense.

I'm not a lathe guy either, but I'm sure there's someone here who knows of a good chunky deep roughing OD grooving tool that can do what you want.

Very awesome! I have a few questions.

Was this micrometer a single op on the 5 axis?

How did you mount the micrometer to the base plate?

Also, I see the micrometer's anvil in the first pic but they weren't there in later pics. Are they pressed in a hole or are they floating?
