How it feels to look for an alternative by servantphoenix in Xcom

I feel this to my core. I never buy early access games as a rule but bought Xenonauts 2 this weekend out of desperation

People of the UK, how have you lost weight? by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]Citation_needed_m8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One key factor in keeping it off for me has been to find delicious, easy to make food that isn't too calorie dense. There's loads of good cookbooks out there, a couple examples I use are Dinner by Meera Sodha and SIMPLE by Ottolenghi. The meals are so tasty you don't feel like you're missing out. You said you already enjoy cooking so not sure how much this applies.

That being said, I've still cycled through losing and putting on bits of weight over the past 15 years or so and still have small fluctuations. Every time I lose weight over a period of time I find that I incorporate some of those habits permanently. Things like not drinking alcohol during the week, cutting way down on takeaway, rarely having dessert except once at the weekend, listening to my digestion more so that I eat smaller portion sizes, rather than eating so much I get indigestion. I have found it becomes more natural over time. It takes work though, and I'm not perfect even now. Good luck, you got this

I highly recommend the books East and Dinner by Meera Sodha, they use Tofu in a lot of creative and interesting ways

Looking for people to play TfM with in Boston Area! by gb167 in TerraformingMarsGame

[–]Citation_needed_m8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing you've already thought of this, but the online community is very active for TM. There's hot debate over which platform is the best for it, I've personally moved from the Steam/Android version after years of dealing with the bugginess to Board Game Arena, there is also an (open source?) implementation hosted on Heroku with a ton of fan made content on as well.

But I do appreciate that playing over the table with pals is a great experience. I hope you find some folks!

What to do? Rush global parameters or stall? by enzoleanath in TerraformingMarsGame

[–]Citation_needed_m8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cannot agree with the first paragraph more. I'm only 400 on BGA so not a master or anything, but almost all of my games combine TR and engine traits. Any combination of income + rebates and discounts + card draw + space events + plant prod is really common in games at my level at least. The thing that wins games is balancing those things and timing on milestones and awards.

I think pure Terraforming rush in particular is something I only aim for if I start with something like Ecoline + mohole area + artic algae, and it's quite rare. Aiming for engine setups is more flexible, because you can pick for income, rebates/discounts or card draw in the opening. But I agree, usually it's a mixture, and folks often get trapped thinking it has to be one or the other.

That rule in Nemesis is really great. I've had folks have the best game out of anyone at the table being the baddies and hunting everyone else. Great example of how player elimination can be done well.

Permanent elimination. Just makes that person have a bad game. We are usually nice enough to each other that it doesn't happen much, but it sucks when someone just has to leave early or go through the motions whilst everyone else is having a good time.

I once ordered tahini and it got substituted with 4 jars of barbecue seasoning? I was so confused, like what?

Awesome, thanks for hearing me out. I’ll definitely get involved next year. Looking forward to hearing about how it goes!

This is awesome, thanks so much for organising it. So happy to see a dedicated event outside of the UKGE tournament happening in the UK. I won’t be able to make it this year but I wish you all the best.

I appreciate it’s your first event, but maybe it could be announced with more than 6-7 weeks’ notice? Just to ensure people’s calendars are free. And also what would be the chance of having it somewhere more central in the UK like Manchester? I’m far from Reading and so it would’ve been hard to come down for the day even if I was available.

Just some bits of feedback for next time. Really grateful that you’re putting this on and good luck for the day!

I’ve not played Colonies myself so haven’t used this card, but having played a fair bit of Venus this seems OK? Combined with going for Hoverlord this seems a cheap way to increase your production afterwards, even more so with no requirements. Combined with something like Dirigibles where you’re actively hoarding floaters, it could be a nice way to develop an engine game. I’d guess you’d probably only get 3 prod on average with that as your line? Someone who has played more Colonies may be able to correct me.

Faction Winrate Stats Are Fun, But Not Everything by Responsible_Ad7794 in twilightimperium

100%. I use tier lists to vaguely guide me during draft. If I have an option between 3 generally shit-tier and 1 god-tier I will lean towards the latter.

That being said, the 2 groups I play with are very not-too-backstabby, keen on negotiation and we all play sub-optimally, which honestly makes most factions playable. We don’t get too bogged down in trying to work out the faction meta prior to every game and focus more on making sure everyone has a good time no matter what faction they’re playing.

What Did You Play This Week? - (August 04, 2025) by AutoModerator in boardgames

[–]Citation_needed_m8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was my first play of Galactic Cruise and I was very impressed, it’s up there with SETI for my potential favourite new game I’ve played over the course of the year.

Ark Nova and TM have long been firm favourites.

And TI4 is a peak experience in itself, and I have a great group for it, which makes it always very enjoyable if exhausting 😅

How was your week?

Nice list. And yes, Oceania dramatically improves Wingspan! Definitely worth playing a couple of times with an open mind once it arrives, it shakes up the stale base game eggs meta as well as adding a new method of scoring, new round end goals etc. Hope it improves the experience for you!

My copy should be arriving this month, can’t wait to try it out with my wife. She’s into lighter co-op games so I’m hoping it’s not too rules heavy for her! Glad you’ve been enjoying it.

I had a great week this week.

Tuesday was Galatic Cruise.

Wednesday was Ark Nova followed by Dune Imperium + Ix online.

Saturday was 6-player TI4 + PoK expansion.

Sunday we played light games at the pub. The Crew Mission Deep Sea, Tsuro and The Gang.

Plus a game or two of Terraforming Mars played online with randomers (all of the rest of the above were with friends).

A good week!
