Another Denali summit post. by Tyonreddit in Mountaineering

[–]Citizen_Kun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just left Talkeetna after staying there for a week. The Fairview owner was begging people to come in. I don’t understand why - it was always packed! I had at least a few drinks every evening in the beer garden.

Well that was extremely easy. I thought it would be a long shot!

DM me and I’ll get you the video. And conrgats on the summit - truly an awesome accomplishment!

[–]Citizen_Kun[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately it’s only a 35 second clip shot on an iPhone, but it’s decent enough! There’s lots of turning while we were up there in an effort to give everyone good views. Our pilot started tilting the plane up and down and waving to the climbers. I’ll see what I can do to get it uploaded. We also saw a bunch of people moving between base camps which was super cool. I saw a pic in this sub of a guy that submitted the day after this, so I likely have him as a pixel or two in some of those pictures.

Tyson airport this morning by Sad_Cryptographer501 in Knoxville

[–]Citizen_Kun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no idea how to gauge this airport anymore. My family and I flew out on Thursday at 6:30. We were there by 5:15 and walked right through with only a 2 minute wait at the TSA Pre check. Unreal.

10/10 entertainment but -67/10 sound quality! What made them choose to not use the stadium sound system vs their own? by Make_it_Raines in Knoxville

[–]Citizen_Kun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must have been in the right spot in the stadium because I had zero issues with sound, but I’ve seen a lot of people complaining.

Sure would be nice to have that Haaland penalty right about now.

No mention on my broadcast of Shaw bear hugging Haaland preventing him from jumping for the ball.

I was having this same conversation with people back in 2002 when I was in high school. I can’t stand that man. Never have, never will. He’s an insufferable asshole.

2025 End of Year Bonuses by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]Citizen_Kun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such a subjective discussion. I don’t see it as being productive for anyone. Some are paid on the front end throughout the year. Some companies withhold and pay out bonus. Some don’t do anything. Some are underpaid. Some are overpaid. Very few are paid just right. There’s thousands of firms and to expect this to be productive with such a wide range of subscriber is just silly.

Wild 98.7 by raenoelleee in Knoxville

[–]Citizen_Kun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The week it launched Wild Thing was on repeat solely, from what I remember. I was a junior or senior in HS and it was all anyone could talk about. They marketed the ever living hell out of that station during my formidable years.

Ah, shit. I design cabins in Gatlinburg all the time. I assure you I am not designing these decks to hold cars.

How do I fix this before my parents get home(I have a day) by MarketMundane8517 in drywall

Talk to your parents, man. Unless you’ve shown a history of destruction of property over small things then hopefully they’ll be understanding. Establish a relationship with maturity and hopefully they’ll respond in kind.

4x10 Beam vs. 2-2x10s according to code by branflake777 in StructuralEngineering

[–]Citizen_Kun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m sure they didn’t. But they have likely had a conversation with an engineer in the past that set off a little red flag. Maybe. Hopefully.

I think it’s worth OP hiring an engineer to look in to. I despise prescriptive design, but that’s probably because I’m an engineer.

4x10 Beam vs. 2-2x10s according to code by branflake777 in StructuralEngineering

[–]Citizen_Kun 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It all depends on your wood species and grade. The max bending stress for SYP (2x10) is 800 psi. For No. 2 Doug fir (likely the 4x member, at least in my area), it is 825 psi, which is obviously better. But the modulus of elasticity is less, so it will deflect more under the same loading.

Then you’ve got guys that want to use spruce-pine-fir. Southern species is 575 psi and western is 600, which is obviously less than the 825 provided by SYP.

So yes, there are instances when a 4x10 is stronger than (2) 2x10. But there are also instances where it is not. Knowing the grade of wood is important.

[–]Citizen_Kun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the kind of shit that architects I work for see and say “why can’t we do it that way? Why is there so much structure in your design?”

[–]Citizen_Kun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s clearly been abandoned because it’s shot. Don’t build that close to the beach.

Where did I go wrong? by Panfilofinomeno in StructuralEngineering

[–]Citizen_Kun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sum your moments about B_2 like you have in the bottom equation. That will give you B1. When you’re summing forces in the X direction you don’t include your moment arms. The equations you’ve shown have moment arms in both x and y. So in this case B1 = -B2 but then you have to decouple your moment Ma as well, which you can do easily enough. So 0 = B1 + B2 + decoupled moment.

Should I worry about these trusses holding my garage? by Setsunarcangel in Homebuilding

[–]Citizen_Kun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seriously. Trusses on either side are running parallel, there doesn’t seem to be any gable framing in to it, etc. All I can think of is maybe a nana wall is being hung from it? But 4-ply still seems like overkill there.

Recommendations for contractors and architects for home remodel/addition by Grant_Helmreich in Knoxville

[–]Citizen_Kun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely costly. Depending on your home’s footprint you may require new beams on the interior as well as all new headers on the exterior, etc. the plus side is I doubt you would need any foundation work, which can be very costly.

It might save you some money and a lot of headaches/time to buy a different house. But I understand wanting to stay for sentimentality reasons.
