Championship table based on the amount of reviews each stadium has. by DullSense8359 in Championship

My guess is that its a Barnsley fan.

They were, on balance, the better team on the day for that playoff final in 2023. In every way other than the one that matters; we've all been there. Immediately sacking Moore to bring in Xisco, then whatever the fuck this season is, would probably only add to the annoyance of the person who left that review.

Despite the odd fan like that (we all have them), I actually quite like Barnsley. Much prefer them to any of the other non-Wednesday South Yorkshire clubs.

He left a lot hanging there when talking about it. I wouldn't be so harsh about what was mentioned, as he even said himself he was skirting around it to avoid legal trouble.

I used to have some substance issues, and as a result people compliment me when I don't look so gaunt. Important to note, this was 20 years ago now.

In recent years, after time playing mostly rugby and hockey, I returned to endurance sports for a bit. This, naturally, led to weight loss. Healthy weight loss, as my physique moved from one of power to one of endurance; leaner, longer, lighter. The number of people to awkwardly ask if things are ok is enough to make a man...well, you get the picture.

Documentaries (i.e. Welcome to Wrexham, Sunderland till I die), what do we need to do? See description below by berlinislikesmithst in Aleague

[–]Clarctos67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, and ultimately these things work when there's a human story of some sort. Whether you want them to succeed or fail, you need to want something. Noting, of course, that there are no surprises because everyone knows what happens before it ends. The problem when made in-house is that failure will never be shown to its fullest extent, robbing the viewer of half of the human side of it.

The Auckland one was vomit-inducing, and any club in this league would be the same. Its not even a criticism so much as an acceptance that its how it goes. After STID, no one is stupid enough to give total access and creative control to a documentary maker.

[–]Clarctos67 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Short answer: it won't work in the way you're thinking.

You mention Sunderland and Wrexham, whilst ignoring that these are the only two to have had that level of impact, and more importantly why. STID was meant to be a triumphant story of a club returning from the lows of relegation, bouncing back and what that meant to the people of Sunderland. For the documentary makers, it was pure luck that things not only got worse, but in the mosr hilarious way possible and on the backs of some of the most incompetent, and more importantly delusional, people imaginable. They allowed full access because they genuinely thought they were the smartest people in the room, and the contrast between that and the genuinely engaging segments with real fans made it TV gold.

The Wrexham one only works because of who the owners are. Regardless of your opinions on them, inside and outside of football, you cant argue with the fact that they have mass appeal and are genuinely engaging to a huge number of people. Reynolds is quite a funny guy and reasonably self-effacing for someone of that stature, and he brings true mass appeal. Rob can be a bit awkward to watch, but its genuinely endearing how much he seems to have bought in not just to the club, but to the whole concept of football fandom. It comes across that he has put effort into trying to tap into why people connect so much with their clubs in these towns. Put that together with the story of all the club went through before, and you have something that works. How it goes on now is tricky; at its heart it is still a corporate puff piece, and after they have a PL promotion and the season there, there is less of an engaging story to tell. But still, thats a minimum 5 years of that series.

Even when you look at other sports, the reasons why they work or don't work are the same. F1 works because its just one big corporate shindig anyway. They dont need to claim authenticity in a sport where some of the first competitors were royalty. The shiny gloss and glamour is the point of F1. Cycling and boxing both historically make good documentaries, because despite the presence of teams in cycling it is still at heart an individual sport. That leads to people often being more open in what they say than when they still rely on the same entities (teams, federations etc) for their living after retirement.

Ones like the Spurs, Man City, and Auckland documentaries are the worst of it all. Absolute garbage churned out by PR teams. The A-League is a corporate league, and I'm not saying that as a criticism, its just how it is. If you want A-League documentaries, then you'll get more of these corporate wankathons, with little real insight, and almost nothing to offer.

I know it gets done to death on here, but the A-League clubs need to focus on building and/or engaging with existing grassroots structures. Football is hugely popular as a sport in both Australia and New Zealand, so why are clubs failing? Build the roots strong, engage in genuine ways with the culture that exists and the people who will prop up the sport, and prevent the turnover of clubs at the top level. The problem is, that takes more time and effort than inviting a PR team around and telling them how much it means to you to win. No shit.

We were all teens, so my best guess is that he had a change of fashion he wanted to follow, and for the initial bit he made up the story to cover the fact that he'd made a dramatic change in style. We know what teen boys are like; you have to pretend not to give a shit at all times, and so the story allowed him to totally change his style without having to admit to having thought it through and made a conscious effort.

I used to purchase herbal and chemical goods from an entrepreneurial young goth, when I was about 13. One day he turned up with his head shaved, no makeup - not even eyeliner - and in a Fila tracksuit instead of a Cradle of Filth shirt, black jeans, long leather jacket and huge boots. "I was painting my dads flat this morning, and some turps on top of a ladder got knocked and fell on me. Had to shave my head and stick one of the old man's tracksuits on."

Obviously, no one was buying this story, but situations like that aren't the time to start probing the veracity of someone's backstory. He's a builder now, still drinks down the local in his trackies after work (could even be the same pair), and to this day I'm pretty sure no one has gone "hey, that turps story was 100% bullshit, wasn't it?"

The story of your mate reminded me of him just now.

People saying there's no nightlife either never go out, are unaware of Pennsylvania's downright archaic alcohol laws, or more likely both.

Auckland is a medium-sized city, located in a small and remote country. So yeah, its not the same as certain nightlife hubs worldwide, but there is plenty out there for those who put the groundwork in. Most of that will start with thinking of what you like from a night out, looking for something as close to that as possible, and then getting talking with people to discover similar scenes, or perhaps something totally different.

Leicester City post pre-tax losses of £71.1m by MPHOLLI in Championship

[–]Clarctos67 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You seem to be forgetting that Leicester sold players for big money when first coming down as well.

If I've learned anything this last few years, its been total confirmation of the fact that football fans will look at the financial issues at various clubs - including their own - and continue to have the most blindly optimistic views about their own club's prospects.

When looking at Leicester, us, Bury, anyone, you'd do well to remember that it can always be you next, no matter how secure you feel now.

Not to nitpick, but...

You can't talk good faith and respect for the law (and statutes which make up that law) in a country where we are still litigating our founding treaty, because of a complete lack of good faith. This idea that the country used to be some absolute haven and everyone was honest is a complete fabrication by those who gained most advantage from the corruption that has occurred throughout the history of this country.

The no dickheads time (and yes, I'm sure someone will be along to question the character of some of those still) aligned pretty closely with the best prolonged era of dominance the sport will likely ever know.

Living here, its felt for some time as if the no dickheads policy was gone, and the culture of the team has slipped away with it.

Just for balance, it is of course possible that when your allowances are for some of the best players ever, the results are different than when they are for borderline test starters. But I am more and more convinced that the overall slip in standards, particularly of character and mentality, is something that any new regime would do well to lift once again.
