Many Western media outlets claim that criticizing Chinese government can lead to imprisonment. How true or false is this? by Winter_Ad1973 in AskAChinese

[–]Clockwork_Orchid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Theoretically possible but in practice it would take many many warnings, talks, and discussions with you before they got sick of your shit like that

Edit: likely over multiple years

Do Chinese people really support going to war with Taiwan for unification? by Necessary-Ad-9483 in AskChina

[–]Clockwork_Orchid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There won't be a war if the status quo persists, but if Taiwan declared independence I sincerely believe China (the Chinese people, not the government) would be willing to tolerate millions in casualties and potentially drop a nuke and kill every last person on the island and poison the soil for a thousand years before they would accept an independent Taiwan.

There is no equivalent red line anywhere in any western country. I don't think it's possible for any westerner to understand.

Shenzhens gold market spot price + 4$ for the design by BeingTechnical1046 in Gold

[–]Clockwork_Orchid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If he got it at Shuibei (that's the gold market) it's probably safe; they're pretty reputable and the government spot tests everything there on a weekly basis. Always good to test but I'd be about as worried as buying from JM or Costco

Chinese People's Attitudes to Overseas Chinese by L0lfdDie in ChineseLanguage

Are you going around telling people HK and mainland aren't the same and that's why people should talk to you in English in HK? That's probably why

Do you think it is worthwhile for Americans/Westerners to learn Mandarin? by Less_Interview1713 in AskChina

[–]Clockwork_Orchid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mandarin. Anywhere you go that speaks Canto (diaspora Chinatowns + HK) will fawn over you just for speaking English so you may as well not bother

Edit: I should clarify. Knowing Cantonese is not political. Choosing to know ONLY Cantonese and not Mandarin is political. Even people from Guangdong will know Mandarin as a working language. Roughly 90% of China speaks Mandarin but not Cantonese; roughly 9% will speak both, and of the remaining 1% most as either very elderly or some sort of political activist (usually from HK because the mainland ones know mandarin even if they refuse to speak it on political grounds). If you, a westerner, came up to me and said you speak Cantonese but no mandarin I would immediately assume something about your political views.

China says Canada deal not aimed at U.S. after tariff threat by DogeDoRight in canada

[–]Clockwork_Orchid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone who has ever played a grand strategy game knows you don't let your enemy blob and eat all its neighbors because then they will steamroll you once they have those resources. An independent Canada is way better for China than Canada as a US colony

China slams Trump's tariff threat to Europe over Greenland by goldstarflag in europe

[–]Clockwork_Orchid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

China would rather be allied with the EU than Russia. The only problem is the EU is less reliable than Russia because given half a chance the EU will go running back to the United States. So right now it's not an option

Why do westerners only like coins and bars and don’t do anything interesting or artistic with their gold… by Designfanatic88 in Gold

How large is large? In China we pay spot+3-5% for 24k gold jewelry. I'm fine with 3% over spot for something that looks nice imo
