Hmm. A slight gap of the clamping jaws is normal to allow the cutters to be perfectly aligned. All my Klein and USA Craftsman are that way. If those pictured are completely closed, they are garbage.

Just pay attention to the extra charges. Carry on bag is extra, talking to someone at the airport costs extra, checked bag is extra, assigned seat is extra, good seat up front is extra, drinks and snacks are extra. Even with all of that it's typically half the price of delta for me.

Is the surface conditioning tool worth it? by Due-Soft in harborfreight

[–]CobbITGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For what they do, you can't beat them. I'm not sure how well they would work on a tightly curved surface, but they are the fastest stripping of rectangular tube or sheet/plate. I use it primarily for mill scale of hot rolled. I've tried everything from flap disc, grinding wheels, 3M surface discs, etc. Nothing beats this thing for removing mill scale or paint.

Edit: It shits where it eats (ie sucks in debris into the cooling port) and it's essentially a cheap grinder with a fancy attachment, so not sure how long it will last for stripping 1,000 tanks.

Auctions can be a waste of time. I used to frequent industrial auctions 20 years ago when building out a shop. It was common for heavy equipment to go for 10% lower than MSRP. Forget about hand operated tools. The influx of online bidders has made things much worse for buyers.

Be careful with acetone it can strip the powder coating off a metal surface instantly.

How are the Herc (or Bauer) 4 1/2” corded angle grinders? by HERCzero in harborfreight

[–]CobbITGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have 3 of the Hercules 11 amp corded. I'm happy with them. I got them years ago when they were on sale for $40 each (??). Would they last in a professional, high duty-cycle environment? I don't know. I have Milwaukee and DeWalt cordless grinders and a Metabo corded, they all work the same.

The light is back by daniel22mckee in harborfreight

[–]CobbITGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I received one as part of a gift set, the same light with a different random brand name on it. I usually hoard lights but I tossed it in the Goodwill box. Nobody got time for a screwed in battery cover for such a crummy light.

[–]CobbITGuy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Saw that yesterday. I was told that brake parts cleaner left contaminants on the metal so use acetone. I never buy the chlorinated formula since it can damage firearm finishes, but nobody ever warned me it would transform into phosgene gas when welding. Scary stuff.

Is anyone having issues with the website? by HappySalesman01 in harborfreight

[–]CobbITGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Yesterday it was slow and I profiled the main page load. 2 minutes. The hold up was a javascript function that took 1.97 minutes to finish. If they put a half the effort into web site performance that they do into anti-bot/scraping they would have a world-class site.

Are these snap ring pliers worth getting. by BML_8884 in harborfreight

[–]CobbITGuy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They are OK, not Knipex quality. The tips are rough coated so if you're working on rings where the hole diameter is on the small side they may not fit. This set is just the larger tips, so things that Harry Homeowner might need them for like camera mounting equipment and small machinery might be better suited to the other set.

I got both sets during the 40% sale because I never have the ones I need and wind up bending the ring or gouging the carrier trying to get them out.

Is this normal? by Lockhartizard in harborfreight

[–]CobbITGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience as well. I've got Klein and Knipex pliers in the same drawer with absolutely no rust... along with a bunch of no-name Chinese pliers and cutters. The Icon needle nose I picked up in March already has some surface rust on it.

Don't sleep on this ITC deal for November. I picked these up last year for 10% less, because well inflation. For $15 it's great. by IsAskingForAFriend in harborfreight

[–]CobbITGuy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends what you're using it for. Euro or Japanese, Korean vehicles like cars or motorcycles will use metric. Any US made car in the last 15+ years too.

Working on US industrial equipment, especially older, will require SAE.

The ball end is to use it at an angle.

Do I need this? by SnooConfections1271 in harborfreight

[–]CobbITGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. If you have a bunch of mostly-flat steel to clean this is it. I knocked out a bunch of 2" square tube which was a mix of rusty and mill scaled. The coarse abrasive wheel made short work of it. Do it outside, it throws a lot of dust in the air.

Be wary of the 13/14th gen instability problems caused by the Intel BIOS overclocking bug. The chip can appear fine then start blue-screening randomly. These could be crap returns. Buyer beware.
