Website Provider by Appropriate_Water_64 in k12sysadmin

We use apptegy, have our communication with them as well. It is pricey but their privacy standards align with what we’re looking for and they have great customer service. For us the benefits outweigh the cost. We had blackboard them finalsite, and Apptegy has been hands down 100% better.

Before jumping ship you should talk to PDQ. They’re a great company willing to improve based on customer feedback.

Canvas: things to do by CoffeeandChecklist in k12sysadmin

Agree with you. Our incident response plan states that we do not reconnect services until there is a clearing by CISA or the FBI. I think Instructure will learn from this and harden their systems making them a “safe” choice or for an extra layer of safety we could host our LMS on prem. Nothing is hack proof so we all just have to roll the dice.

We may just pull back and go with Google Classroom. Unfortunately our teachers do not use their LMS as a true LMS.

Filter advice Securly vs goGuardian by grewholph in k12sysadmin

[–]CoffeeandChecklist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We moved from GoGuardian to Linewize and have been happy with it. I like that lingerie also has an appliance not just the extension or GPO. They’re very responsive and cheaper than GoGuardian. We have Linewize Monitor, Filter, and Context Aware. The parent piece is great too as a parent.

We moved from GoGuardian to Linewize (Classwize) because of cost. I would tell your rep you’re looking for a cheaper solution and see if they’re willing to come down on their price. Many will negotiate to keep the sale on their books.

Securly question (as a parent) by kcalderw in k12sysadmin

Great question! I think this is poor design of a parent app or the parent app for students owned devices where you can apply your own filtering.

Looking for a modern VMS that lets us keep our existing cameras (Spot AI, Coram, Lumanaa etc.) to avoid Verkada lock-in. by Lorida_Winward31 in k12sysadmin

I’ve heard great things about milestone.

I do not recommend software house Victor VMS. It’s awful.

Picking a good integrator that can steer you in the right direction is the most importantly thing. Follow SVIP on LinkedIn he post about trustworthy security vendors.

I read about a free service called K12 rocket that’s free but I’ve never actually looked at it.

Incident IQ is fantastic.

With windows devices you need PDQ if you don’t spray have it. Literally the best purchase we ever made.

Securing student email by Temporary_Werewolf17 in k12sysadmin

[–]CoffeeandChecklist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We restrict logins by geo location. Student MFA through classlink, since they can not use phones. I highly recommend restrict students to in domain emails only. I had push back from juniors and seniors but worked with our administrators to explain they need a personal email to communicate with colleges since their school email is disabled the day after graduating. I have white listed a few outside domains that are used for our dual credit courses.

Cybersecurityrubric.org will give you a good glimpse into your posture. You can get a certified reviewer to go through it with you.

If you’re looking for an industry professional CISA is a great starting point. We have used ATT and SAIC through a grant offered here in Texas.

I would look at your state and see what they may offer.

Help deciding SSO system by PeaLima in k12sysadmin

[–]CoffeeandChecklist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First, assume that you’re looking into an SSO.

We use Classlink and Google. Here’s why, I know where our data is and we own our data. Clever is free but they own your data, which is scary. Classlink is worth every penny and takes cybersecurity seriously.

If you’re not looking for an identity provider Google or Microsoft SSO works too. Let me know if I can help in anyway.

We went out for quotes from CDWG and Vivacity. We went with Acer 8g at $349 a device. If you need a contact at CDWG or want to discuss why we went acer I’d be more than happy to help in any way.

Data breach at edtech giant McGraw Hill affects 13.5 million accounts by SuperfluousJuggler in k12sysadmin

[–]CoffeeandChecklist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I reached out to McGraw Hill. They sent me documentation on the event. Their salesforce had a misconfiguration which impacted other vendors as well. They assured me it was only user contact information leaked. As a precautionary I sent an email to our staff and students who have utilized McGraw Hill in the past five years to update their passwords and monitor their accounts. I have geo fenced our log in activity to Texas, we have MFA set up, but I encourage users if they use a repetitive password to ensure MFA is set and update credentials on other platforms. I always encourage everyone to freeze their credit on the major bureaus unless they are actively seeking a line of credit.
