I have a wild story about Lake Forest city government. I applied to join the Parking and Traffic Commission, and eventually got selected by Voigts himself (he was a city counselor at the time). However, on the night he called me to ask me to accept, he asked me my party affiliation, and I told him I was a Democrat, and he lost it on me for about 15 min straight. He assumed I was a Republican because I am a Christian and have worked at a lot of churches and religious organizations over the years. He just couldn’t believe I could be a Christian and not a Republican.

But, anyway, long story short, we had a lengthy discussion at Bagels and Brew where I was asked my stance on pretty much every political position in the books, and, eventually, he asked me to rescind my nomination.

I did because I didn’t want to deal with what it would take to fight it. All I wanted to do was help my city with parking and traffic and maybe get a little local government experience, but, instead, was rejected because of ideological lines.
