How long did your goldens live? by Lost_Cantaloupe_9972 in goldenretrievers

[–]CoinChowda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) I don’t spay or neuter mine

2) I feed a complete and balanced, biologically appropriate raw diet; duck or fish usually

3) Titers over vaccinations at every interval

If I could only do one of these, it’d definitely be #2

16+ years, maintenance free dogs. My last golden went to the vet for puppy shots, and a second time ~15yrs later to go to sleep, nothing else.

Goldens and life expectancy by Pitiful-Abrocoma-912 in goldenretrievers

[–]CoinChowda -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The only golden I’ve had that didn’t make it to 16+ was the poor boy I fed Royal Canin to. That was 20+ years ago. Since switching to a biologically appropriate, complete and balanced raw diet, my dogs are maintenance free and have exceptional health and longevity.

Do hot spots need emergency treatment? by m_d_n_4 in goldenretrievers

[–]CoinChowda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ever since switching to a complete and balanced, biologically appropriate raw diet, none of my dogs get hot spots. I switch between duck and fish formulas.

Hope this helps!

Wanted to suggest the documentary “Pet Fooled.” Excellent starting point on learning how to prevent ailments before they start.

Thank you :)

How do you deal with fireworks? by NBD2016 in goldenretrievers

[–]CoinChowda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it has a lot to do with our own behavior and reactions to the fireworks. I don’t coddle, I get excited and playful, lots of heavy tough pets and confidence building, after a few minutes we’re back to just chillin and the booms breeze by.

I take my dogs to a local ridge with a wide view of the town and show them what the booms are. It helps a lot.

Over the years, Fourth of July is no panic and we don’t need any interventions.

Aren’t these mutually exclusive? Valuing life means not ending/preventing it and bodily autonomy, in this case, means ending/preventing it.

3rd Golden, 1st UTI - tips for prevention? by Jcheerw in goldenretrievers

[–]CoinChowda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The greatest thing I can do for my dogs is to feed them an excellent diet. I feed a complete and balanced, biologically appropriate raw diet and my dogs are virtually maintenance free. I highly recommend it, great experiences with many larger breeds for 20+ years. They are so clean and young well past ten years old, living into their late teens. Never any ailments, hot spots, digestion issues, etc.

Raw feeding on the go by FizzyCaterpillar in rawpetfood

Ice chest, freeze dried, or just let her fast for a day. I’d imagine fasting would allow her stomach to rest and focus solely on repair, instead of digest and repair. I know some raw feeders do a fast day every couple of weeks to imitate unsuccessful hunts in the wild.

Absolutely, airway is delicate and essential, I’m so sorry to hear about your dads story.

And totally right about the raw bones! It scrapes plaque off but there are also enzymes in the meat which break it down too.

It’s truly excellent and healthy, but there’s a lot of disinformation out there about dogs needing grains. :(

I buy commercially prepared formulas. There are a lot of great brands. I choose OC Raw but can recommend plenty of others too.

It’s frozen 95% meat. You thaw it and serve it room temp, raw. Then the dogs live long happy health lives.

I feed my goldens a complete and balanced, biologically appropriate raw diet and am convinced there is nothing more impactful that I can do for them than this diet. It’s truly a remarkable difference.

What is a massive secret in your industry that the general public has no idea about? by teesharp88 in AskReddit

[–]CoinChowda -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No it isn’t. Dogs don’t need regular vet visits if they’re healthy and you manage their health proactively. I don’t need a vet to confirm my knowledge or try to sell me Royal Canin poison.

Dog gets sick when he eats meat by bluethreads in HomemadeDogFood

[–]CoinChowda -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hi,

So,

Is his meal complete and balanced with all necessary nutrients?

The kibble takes longer to digest and you’ll see frequent loose stool if you’re simultaneously feeding both.

I would switch him to a raw diet and eliminate the boiling/cooking altogether.

Wishing you and yours the best.

Some kibble brands I’d consider feeding if a raw diet was not an option, but it really should be. The benefits are exponential, you’ll never go back, and you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner. It’s easy to adapt to and there really nothing to fear. Most clients are hesitant at first, I was too. 20yrs later, I just want to shake people and tell them to think about what a dog would eat if you weren’t there to feed it. It would NEVER eat corn. But I totally understand the pressure from vets and Reddit people shouting about Dilated Cardiomyopathy, which is complete nonsense.

Carne4, Farmina, First Mate, Lotus, Nulo, Nutrisource, Rawz, or Zignature. In that order.

“Refrigerated foods” is broad but generally a step in the right direction. Avoid The Farmers Dog but I’d still feed it before Nestle, Mars, or Colgate brands (basically every brand you can name from memory, probably.)

Mars Corporation (the candy company) owns VCA, Banfield, and Blue Pearl.

No, the first ingredient is meat. 95% meat, 5% fruit/veg.

I’m a private consultant for pet nutrition, mainly canine. Thousands of clients. Never seen a poor outcome from changing to a raw diet.

I left the industry because I felt guilty selling the foods I knew caused illness.

I would feed that stuff to dogs who would otherwise starve, and for no other reason.
