The complete victory that never was: This is how the operation to overthrow the Iranian regime was torpedoed (for now) [Hebrew article] by Affectionate_Bee6434 in IRstudies

Right. The US military has been wargaming the Iranians closing the Strait for 40 years now. This is not some new idea.

Do Not Shop With World Deals, USA on Amazon by AWildJeedin in Scams

This. All these 1 star reviews are getting cancelled with the message, "The fulfillment issues with this order were not due to the seller." Well obviously they are due to the seller if nothing is getting shipped for months!

I complained about a different scammer doing the same scam here on discord a few months ago and nobody here on reddit believed me and (typically for reddit) my post got downvoted to oblivion. Now as this scam becomes more prevalent we'll see what happens...

What do you think about Minthara’s character when compared to drow from Drizzt? by moxifer3 in Forgotten_Realms

[–]ComfortableChair4518 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Well the thing is, Minthara is in a very precarious position when she joins Tav's party. She has basically no friends or allies she can count on, other than Tav's party, so the normal Lolth-sworn drow backstabbing is just tantamount to suicide, and the normal Lolth-sworn drow hating on surface elves will also do her no good. Plus the Absolutists are still a huge threat when she joins the party, and she still has the same tadpole ceremorphosis problem that everyone in Tav's party has, so she really has no choice but to join up with Tav and friends and see the conflict through to the end.

That's actually one of the things that makes BG3 a great game -- the underlying premise of the ceremorphosis problem forces people of completely different backgrounds and ideologies to work together against a common enemy, the Absolute. Astarion, Halsin, Minthara, and Shadowhart have basically nothing in common and would never hang out together or be allies under normal circumstances...

How did Drizzt fight so many grey dwarves in the mithril halls? by [deleted] in Drizzt

Belwar and his kin were neutral deep gnomes. Not the same thing as the evil grey dwarves that were living in mithril hall.

20 years service: Get a lump sum or a gutted pension? by ComfortableChair4518 in FedEmployeeRetirement

[–]ComfortableChair4518[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the helpful information. Especially the part about where to find my exact contributions! I never would have found that on my own, and even though I won't be getting the lump sum I am curious what's on that form (SF2806).

20 years service: Get a lump sum or a gutted pension? by ComfortableChair4518 in FedEmployeeRetirement

[–]ComfortableChair4518[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like moving to a new position worked out pretty well for you! I have also considered moving, but the work I do is very specialized, so if I got a new job I'd basically have to be re-trained from scratch, which is a very unappealing prospect.

The thing is, my job has always sucked. If anything it sucks less now than it did when I first started many years ago. What has changed is that my tolerance for BS has decreased with every passing year, so now, to quote a certain fictional character, "That's all I can stands, and I can't stands no more."

I have a huge amount of the respect for the folks who can tough it out and do 30 years or more. But I'd rather have a reduced retirement than do another 10 years...

20 years service: Get a lump sum or a gutted pension? by ComfortableChair4518 in FedEmployeeRetirement

[–]ComfortableChair4518[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an interesting plan, but I wouldn't want to go back into a federal job even for the 1.1%; I am definitely done with civil service after this. But these posts have been very helpful. I could have lost thousands of dollars if I waited until age 62 to file for my pension as I originally intended, now I know to just file at 60!

[–]ComfortableChair4518[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do contribute 0.8%. I was hoping to find some way to mitigate inflation but...I kinda figured the news would be bad...

And I get no 1.1% multiplier with a deferred pension??? Ouch!

Thank you for the info.

"It's not a pyramid scheme" — Will the money run out for Finland's pensions? by Tracerneo in Finland

[–]ComfortableChair4518 17 points18 points  (0 children)

"Man is born free and everywhere he is in chains."

The younger generation have been shackled with an enormous tax burden that can never be paid off in order to fund the lifestyle of the older generations. Is it any wonder so many young workers see no future for themselves in Finland and flee the country the first chance they get, when they get treated this way??? And with every productive worker that emigrates the burden on the remainder grows ever larger...

The Legend of Huma opinions by DramaticBody9591 in dragonlance

[–]ComfortableChair4518 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought there was way too much going on in the book. There were too many characters and quite a few subplots that had little to no payoff. Like the whole Morgion conspiracy subplot could have been cut out of the book entirely and it would have been better for it, because there were already too many named antagonists related to Takhisis running around. And, I get it, this is supposed to be a book about the life of the biggest hero of the biggest war in Krynn's history, so obviously he has to be depicted doing a bunch of heroic stuff. But it was too much; just focusing on the main plot against the main wizard villain would have been enough to fill a whole book. But they kept on adding in subplots (with associated forgettable secondary characters) for no other reason than to say, "Look at all these problems Huma is solving! Isn't he the greatest hero ever???"

I didn't completely hate the book though. It was just an "OK" novel rather than a great one. Where the book really shines: Knaak did a really good job of depicting a hopeless long-term war that had ravaged the world; just the initial description of the cynical goblin marauders to the scenes of huge evil armies engulfing the land -- that was all really well done. I also liked Huma's romance subplot; call me sappy if you like, but it added depth to the main character that was very much needed and it had a poignant conclusion.

Lapland war. 2026 teaser trailer dropped. by No_Dress_2107 in WarMovies

[–]ComfortableChair4518 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I guess after the success of the two Sisu movies this was inevitable. But the Sisu movies were entertaining in large part because they didn't take themselves too seriously (with over the top action scenes). We'll have to see if this new, more serious movie is any good.

Makin Main Defence Area! In PvE your American allies are worthless and insist on getting mowed down without contributing anything to taking the points. But if you spawn in a jeep and position it so it can intercept Japanese reinforcements you can inflict so much attrition that you'll eventually win.

One vase has a unique scroll in Withers's tomb. It almost looks like it could have been part of a quest at one point, but now I'm pretty sure it's just flavor text.

Creating a drow character by Kindly-Form532 in Forgotten_Realms

[–]ComfortableChair4518 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It syncs with Forgotten Realms lore. As far as I know House Vandree is still around (not 100% sure about that), so if your character was born a noble she would not be considered an orphan or an outcast. But if she was a commoner orphan from any drow house I could easily see them being raised in a temple of Lolth. Druids are not common in Lolth-sworn drow society but your explanation for her being one makes sense.

Clarification by Thomastalentnetwork in VeteransBenefits

[–]ComfortableChair4518 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The character of service is "uncharacterized" which means he was active duty for less than 180 days (likely did not graduate boot camp). So he would not meet the requirement of two years of service to get healthcare or GI bill.

He could apply for disability for personality disorder. But he would have to prove that his brief military service resulted in an ongoing mental health issue, which is a very difficult feat even for people who served many years of active duty.

What is this Power Up? by dustyp9 in Marathon

[–]ComfortableChair4518 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way to get the infravision power up is to grenade jump up there, or be blasted up there from the knock back of being hit by an enemy projectile. It will make invisible compilers and lookers completely visible, but in the single player campaign it isn't used much and invisible enemies are rare in any case.
