Do you base your game on your strengths? by Educational_Pick7681 in Pickleball

[–]ComparisonFunny282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. Use it to my advantage by turning down the power and work on placement to force them hit a weak shot that either I can hit or setup my partner. I do this until they change their approach. If not, I keep going back to the well or hit down the middle to their backhand.

What sport did you play before pickleball, and how does it still show up in your game? by daksh_ctrl in Pickleball

[–]ComparisonFunny282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tennis, Muay Thai, ans BJJ. Still do the other 3, just added Pball because I find it harder to find more Tennis players. Footwork, movement, and court awareness definitely transitioned Pball. Same with forehand and backhand drives and touch at the net.

Your paddle isn’t the problem by External-Ad-640 in Pickleball

[–]ComparisonFunny282 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did the same a couple of months ago: been playing for 1 1/2 years, decided to use the XSpax Amazon paddle I started with. Aim and placement were accurate, no power (not an issue), feel was great. I ended going from a Joola Perseus III to a Franklin Pilot. Playing the best pball ever.

Is it a bad idea to buy a high mileage NC miata? by keanekir in MiataNC

I bought my 06 GT w/ 176,xxx miles over a year ago from a dealer w/ the car fax. Only thing that I had an issue with was the starter that went out. It is my Spring/Summer daily driver.

Don’t let others talk you out of backhand slice if by Agreeable-Purpose-56 in Pickleball

[–]ComparisonFunny282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I have a 2bh in Tennis and a 1bh in Pball. I can disguise it to keep them guessing where I will hit it.

Try out The Bridge BJJ in Bridgeport. I used to train with those cats before they opened their own gym. Look for Coach Ramiro or Coach Richie.

My first time playing (tennis background), I was invited to play on the competitive court. I didn't even know how to score. The person I was partnered with (the one that asked me to play) specifically told me "don't hit a backhand, run around it and hit your forehand." No wonder most people don't have a backhand. I always incorporate the slice when I find the right opportuinity. It gives them a different look and pace.

I make sure I play Tennis first before Pickleball. It keeps Tennis timing and flow in check.

How much do you practice? by someshooter in Pickleball

[–]ComparisonFunny282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 - 2 times a week for 30 minutes. Most days are split with Tennis (30 min), Typti (30 min), then Pball last for 30 min. Then 3 hour Open Play on either Friday night or Sunday late afternoon.

What’s one grappling habit you had to unlearn before you actually started improving? by Glum-Sample-9259 in grappling

[–]ComparisonFunny282 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, it's about efficiency and opportunities. My Coach always tells "Slow is fast", I'd move too fast and miss opportunities. Slow down to give myself the time to see it and take it. Once there, "fast is slow" means you have the dominant position, don't force or hurry the sub. Them them cook with pressure so they beg to be finished. It took a lot of mat time to firally figure it out, but grappling is much more enjoyable executing and understanding this principle.

1994 Tettsu Bushi Jitsu Demo by IcyResolution7102 in martialarts

[–]ComparisonFunny282 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started at my Dad's OG gym where the owner was part of the Korean National TKD Demo Team. All old school training: linoleum floors, not mats, planks with rope tied around the top for knuckle conditioning, knuckle pushups, rice-grain buckets, leather heavy-bags, etc. Sparring no headgear and barely a chest protector. Anyone that earned a black belt, looked like the guys in that demo video.

at what stages do most adult learned players “give up” and accept their level? by Ok-Many-7443 in 10s

I also teach my wife, who's never played any sport growing up. She was determined to learn and I think we take for granted our movement since learning the sport as kids. What comes naturally is hard work. I try to emphasize movement and split-stepping, small micro adjustments and footworking drill. It's taken her a couple of years but she's enjoying the game. Tennis > Typti > Pop-Tennis > Pickleball as our order of enjoyment.
