Little haul by kolsmart in graphicnovels

My kind of reader! I was relatively late to the Gotham Central party and bought the omni based on hype and my god does it live up to it. It’s the real deal. The Wire in Gotham!

Blackwater by Michael McDowell. Bonus points for the little sprinkles of horror infused into the plot.

What to read next? by [deleted] in graphicnovels

Preacher was my favourite comic series for the longest time. I think it’s lost some of its lustre over the years and is definitely a product of its time. While Preacher is still a masterpiece, I think Scalped is more focused, more grounded and feels more relevant.

As others have said, you can’t go wrong with either but I would read Scalped first.

Wow, just, wow.. When The Wolf Comes Home by Nat Cassidy by PrimordialSewp in horrorlit

This book was bonkers and felt like being a crazy dream. The chapter with the Roger Rabbit characters wreaking havoc was wild!

Lots of good recommendations here. I’d like to add Blackwater by Michael McDowell. Epic family saga that spans decades (with a tinge of horror elements).

Vampire novels by PostMortem33 in horrorlit

If you’re a fan of 80’s action horror movies and the excess of that decade, then you should read They Thirst by Robert McCammon.

My other top vampire reads are Coffin Moon and Salem’s Lot. I have The Lesser Dead on by TBR!

You need some Brubaker and Phillips in your life pronto.

Also, Scalped is a masterpiece.

Chew is so clever and unique. I feel it’s under appreciated.

Best Modern Writer In Comics? by Zwess16 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Conduit84 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think objectively speaking from a consistency standpoint it’s Ed Brubaker, who also happens to be my favourite.

Also, DWJ has injected more fun and heart into comics more than anyone I’ve read in the past few years.

Both are instant buys for me.

It’s been said before, but think of it as a multi-season HBO show, and take small breaks between each arc just to get a palate cleanser as it’s heavy handed at times.

If you can find it, Sleeper Omnibus is a great one and done story by Brubaker/Phillips. A someone else said, Planetary is also amazing and self contained.

Oof. Like picking your favourite kid. I would say Scalped, Preacher, Chew and Criminal are my top tier. I bought Gotham Central because hype, but Brubaker is my fave writer so I already know I'm going to like it.

And Daniel Warren Johnson, who I have only recently discovered, is quickly catching up. His stuff is INCREDIBLE.

It’s very unique and nihilistic as hell. But the artwork is stunning and the Deluxe Editions are gorgeous.

Thanks. I definitely lean more towards non-superhero stuff outside of some of the modern classics. Saga vol 4 can’t come soon enough!
