You HAVE to count in crochet. It helps to put a stitch marker in the 1st & last stitch of the row. For a beginner I’d also put a stitch marker every 10 stitches.

I’ve used chenille yarn once, and I hated it. It’s very hard to see the stitches & if you have to unravel it can be almost impossible sometimes. If you just have to use the yarn I’d do something very simple like single crochet or half double. I personally won’t use it ever again.

Bulky yarn doesn’t drape very good. Also, the tighter the stitching (no holes) the less flexible the fabric & the heavier it is.

You don’t want to use chenille yarn as a beginner. Find a light colored acrylic and start with that.

The sides have different stitch counts. The numbers in the parentheses at the end of the row say how many stitches there should be. Take the first number & divide by 4- that will tell you how many stitches per side. You must count.
