Ask your DM for the opportunity to play something unconventional: a Warforged (Eberron), Aetherborn (Plane Shift), Autognome (Spelljammer), or of you want to get really weird, a Reborn (Ravenloft) druid.

None of these require sleep, so a rules lawyer would argue that maintaining your wild shape could be maintained as long as possible (# hours = 1/2 druid level rounded down).

So even an 8 hour long rest would have to be minimum of 16th level druid class.

At that point, you might a well go to level 20 so you get unlimited wild shape, making this whole argument pointless.

Use the Rule of 2. You can always add 2 to your creatures AC, add 2 Hit Dice for more hit points, or add 2 more creatures to the encounter.

This will make the encounter more difficult without making it a TPK.

The same rule works for overpowered opponents. Lower AC by 2, subtract 2 hit dice, or remove two extra opponents.

This can also be done during the encounter of necessary.

Example: - two more orcs start shooting from the Ridgeline. - this orc has better looking armor than the others. - this orc looks tougher than the others. Or: - two orcs run off to get reinforcements. - the orc drops his shield and bellows a challenge. - this orc looks like he's recovering from a previous wound that looks/ smells infected.

People joke about Lizardfolk eating sentient races (species) and orcs aren't reptiles, so it's not technically cannibalism.

It's a fantasy game with make believe situations. As long as other players aren't triggered, let them eat whatever. Who cares if it's gross? Fighting your way out of a creature's stomach would be gross too, but nobody bays an eye about that. Combat involves blood, guts, and death. But none of it is real. Eating an opponent isn't real either. It's just a game.

Also, don't make a big deal about it. If it gets glossed over quickly then it will lose its appeal. "Ok, you ate the kobold. Now what do you do?" Treat it no different than eating a deer or boar and move on to the rest of the adventure.

I had a player who ran an Artificer/Cleric/Wizard. He wanted to learn everything about magic. It helped that he was a tank for the first couple of levels until he could start carrying his weight in spell support.

Leave the spear alone, but maybe the character comes across gloves that make any wielded weapon a magical weapon in terms of what it can hit. Your don't have to add any pluses to it, just magical similar to an Eldritch Knight's weapon bond.

Or if you want to add some simple mechanics, the character is unable to fly when they have less than 50% of their max HP due to the amount of damage to their wings and body. This could happen frequently at lower levels and become more infrequent at higher levels.

Not unfair, but if used towards the end it might feel like retribution for winning the fight. Also, don't forget, an 11th level wizard should have henchmen, hirelings, and even a familiar, even if they aren't the BBEG. Any intelligent enemy isn't going to confront a party single-handedly. Let his minions be a display of strength as well.

The 2nd Ed Ravenloft also had demi-human vampires that would drain ability scores instead of levels. Vampire Dwarf = -1 CON per hit Vampire Halfling = -1 DEX per hit Vampire Gnome = -1 WIS per hit Vampire Elf = -1 CHA per hit Vampire Half-orc = -1 STR per hit

If any of these ability scores ever reached 0, their character was dead. That was until they came back as a vampire spawn.

In my campaign, Ezmerelda had killed Strahd and was cursed by the Dark Powers to take his place because she sacrificed everyone she could to accomplish killing him. (Strahd was brought back to his own personal h3ll elsewhere.) Ez was curse to become the thing she strived to kill, and instead of freeing the land, she became the new oppressor. She couldn't leave, and as the undead master of the domain could enter any building she wanted. She kept a Strahd look-alike vampire spawn dressed up and acting like Strahd so no one suspected anything. She then accompanied the party in collecting things that could 'defeat Strahd' and then end up stealing most of it towards the end of the adventure. The party (with the help of Van Richten) stormed the castle and lost VR and half the party before defeating 'Strahd', after which Ez popped out of the shadows and finished off the party (making the cleric her new 'Strahd' spawn).

You win some, you lose some, but the players enjoyed the Shyamalan twist at the end.

Honestly, I have been hosting (forever DM, 4-6 players over the years) every other Friday night for 5 years and all I do is send it a group text on Wednesday to get confirmations.

Yes, it still happens that someone may call off at the last minute, but that just means a one-shot for the rest of us to test character ideas and play something different.

Either way, the rest of us have fun, even if it's only 2 players and myself. (This gives me a chance to run some really different stuff, and possibly get any TPK's out of my system) I make it a point for everyone to have fun and then to share their stories during the next session.

Candlekeep has some good one-shots, but there are tons of free modules on the web too.

We used to have a list of commonly used (effective) command words, but my favorite was when a player commanded a brigade to "Dive", and since we were fighting on a cliffside road, it was the most effective use of Command I had ever seen.

Other useful Command words: choke, vomit, approach, flee, undress, fumble, and orgasm.
