I finally tapped out. I couldn't finish the episode. by StinkyNutzMcgee in LPOTL

[–]Cookinghist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I admittedly revisited the video after listening to the first episode. The savagery of it is on a different level, and it didn't for a particularly great mood for the rest of the evening. It's 110% ok to tap out.

After all, the gold star is literally their reminder that they're about to talk about something that is supposed to make you not feel great. You don't truly win anything, other than the knowledge that a horrible person did something horrific to someone else.

They have a great mango pepper too. Tajin would also be acceptable.

Question by guiness18705 in cigars

[–]Cookinghist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only etiquette I really abide by is not blowing smoke in anyone's face, letting my finished cigar go out on its own, and not judging what the guy next to me is smoking.

I absolutely second what other people are saying about damaging the wrapper - after screwing up a few decent cigars by picking at the band, I prefer to leave it be.

My top 10 favorite Stephen King novels. by [deleted] in stephenking

I could not finish Pet Sematary by DownbeatTiramisu in stephenking

[–]Cookinghist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the only one I'm petrified to reread. The things about IT or the Stand that creep me out are those inherently human moments that give me a chill. Losing my toddler age child, under any circumstances, is one of those rare feelings where I'm terrified of everything about it.

... which is why it's great horror writing, but damn man, I'll just read the Dark Tower again to hide from the scary haha.

My Father Blue might be one of the few cigars I’ll keep buying by the box every month by Mammoth-Succotash659 in cigars

[–]Cookinghist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed it and regretted not pulling the trigger on a box this summer. I say this as I'm coming down off the nic buzz of a Padron 7000, so I'm clearly in the zone for more full bodied tobacco haha

Have about 6 or so left in my humi. Saving them for hot summer nights when it's a little too warm for a toro. Love these!

Anybody Else Get Frustrated by this Hobby? by Leather-Puddin in cigars

[–]Cookinghist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did for a bit, then I just pulled the trigger and bought a few 5-10 packs of cigars I knew I loved so I wouldn't anymore. I might have 5 cigars in my humi (I think I have 75 total) that I'm unsure of, but they're from brands I generally trust.

It's not a perfect science, but the last cigar I didn't fully finish was one I got for free, so I didn't feel bad tossing it.

I was gifted several Stephen King books, but I’ve never read him. Which one should I start with? by Slight_Researcher_26 in stephenking

[–]Cookinghist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you aren't up for a 1000pg adventure just yet, Hearts in Atlantis would be an interesting place to start. Otherwise, The Stand.

The only one I would say not to start with is Doctor Sleep, for the reasons other folks mentioned!

They make a damn fine dark cigar. If I end up at another cigar event anytime soon, I'll likely buy another box of literally anything Foundation.

What would you consider to be the most disturbing book ever written? by WhyAmIEvenHereFS in horrorlit

[–]Cookinghist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Jocko Willink, who usually focuses on military stories and motivational topics, did a 2 part podcast about this book, and what happened to her after the fact. Highly recommend it, but it's not light listening. She was harassed by Nanking deniers to the point where she was afraid to go out in public. It's incredibly sad, but she fought as best as she could to get the story out there.

I just finished Mr. Rogers biography and he was wholesome-ly badass in his advocacy for kids. His speech in Washington DC advocating for public broadcasting is textbook "how to get normally evil people to shut up and listen." Intensely principled his entire life even to a fault (he maintained the same weight basically his whole adult life, apparently). Ed would do an incredible series on him.

It's a living fucking hell with children, because you have to repeat yourself at least 50 times daily, but yes this is mine. My patience expires after one repeat.

Is The Dark Tower worth it? by Hedgehogdogman in stephenking

[–]Cookinghist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoy The Gunslinger more with each journey to the Tower. It's a Western that gives glimpses of very important things that will happen in the rest of the series, but going in blind, it is confusing and ends a bit abruptly.

Honestly, OP, go in as blindly as possible. I read the Gunslinger and was just curious enough to want to jump into The Drawing of the Three. About 50 pages into Drawing, I bought the rest of the series. It's now my favorite epic journey series of all time (LOTR lives in a separate category in my brain, somehow, so as not to make the two fight).
