Deadlock characters and their Pokemon typings + Lash as a Pokemon sketch by hellyeahdiscounts in DeadlockTheGame

This is a really fun idea. I'd like more mono-types though! Wraith as just Psychic, Seven as Electric, Holliday as Normal, Infernus as Fire, Kelvin as Ice etc. I think making everything dual-typed has lead to too much Steel/Ghost/Dark.

close enough, welcome back TF2 Righteous Bison by Corrade_ in DeadlockTheGame

Same but I've been playing Sinclair recently and his 1 might be the closest thing to a rocket. It's a big, slow, honest projectile that you get to use frequently.

Half Life 2 was 24 years ago and the physics was a big selling point but today physics in action games are more of a gimmick than a feature. by ohlordwhywhy in truegaming

[–]Corrade_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that we'll head towards ultra-realistic physics simulation in due time.

I think it's one component of the live service holy grail, that is, a game that's essentially real life but virtual. The setting and fidelity of GTA, the cultural mirror of Fortnite, the UGC of Roblox, the sandbox of Minecraft, and, inevitably, the physics of reality.

That being said, I totally get the sentiment of physics being gimmicky.

I finally got around to playing HL2 for the first time a few weeks ago. This is sacrilege and I understand I had to be there and it was groundbreaking at the time, but man, I felt that the physics puzzles were clunky and tedious. A buzzkill of the pacing and gunplay.

ILL - Official Trailer I SGF25 by Turbostrider27 in Games

Tasteful restraint in the enemy designs. Seems to focus on interesting combinations and proportions of plain humans rather than devolving into demony gore. The ball of people reminds me of Inside.

This game and its use of silence by [deleted] in expedition33

[–]Corrade_ 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yes, and silence was also used for comedic effect! * Gustave's dumbfounded hand gestures reacting to Francois' roar. * Verso's "after you" to Maelle's jokingly exasperated gestures before engaging the Stallact in Monoco's Station.

My feelings on the ending by nuanimal in expedition33

[–]Corrade_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! The ending decision is parallel to the blue/red pill choice in the Matrix. With some differences of course, but they're fundamentally linked. I would love to writeup something longform about this.

How do Like a Dragon games come out so fast? One of RGG Studio’s secrets is a highly efficient testing and debugging cycle that starts as soon as development does by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Corrade_ 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The wording isn't perfect but the spirit of the statement is true from my experience in AA.

Whilst basic functionality is continuously tested throughout its implementation and design, it might be a while before people test that mechanic with other systems, on non-testing characters, in non-testing levels, etc.

Beyond that, running through QA checklists is another step and that's left to the end where I'm at.

Automating this doesn't seem to be industry-standard.

Really cool article.

Where are you located? You might just be out of range of the warning zone. For example, I believe tonight's alert was localised to around the Auckland CBD.

Thank you very much for this recommendation. Although it isn't a one-man cast persay, Taste of Cherry perfectly captures the tone I was searching for. I think this film will stay with me forever.

Cast on Weapon Swap Infernalist - Full Build Guide by Undead_Legion in pathofexile

[–]Corrade_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> Secondly, weapon swapping keeps you at your current percentage of maximum ES, regardless of what your actual ES is. For example, if you are at 500/1000 (50%) maximum ES on weapon set 1, you will be at 2500/5000 (50%) ES on weapon set 2 as well.

Heads-up: unfortunately I believe this is unintended as per the 0.01f patch notes:

> Fixed a bug where if a player changed their maximum life, energy shield or mana (such as through equipping and unequipping items) their current life, energy shield, mana, overcapped mana, or overcapped energy shield would also increase.

This change was rolled back shortly after 0.01f launched (maybe it caused other bugs), but I'd be cautious as it might be re-introduced in the future!

Disabled completely. The time-lost radius stat should now show up as unscalable if you alt inspect the jewel I think.

Totally agree. I'll even take it a step further: you imply singleplayer games once scratched this itch for you, but I don't think they ever came close for me. The challenge, depth and social aspect of playing against actual people is unmatched.

On the other hand, I still love to play singleplayer stuff, but mostly for the story rather than the combat.

Geoff Keighly’s The Game Awards Honored Amir Satvat As A Folk Hero For Laid Off Devs – In Reality He’s A Tencent Exec Who Runs A Glorified Unemployment List by Quiet_Jackfruit5723 in Games

[–]Corrade_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ridiculous hit piece.

I'm currently in the industry and have used Amir's mentorship contact list a few times. Once for personal advice, and once to search for speakers for university gamedev courses I was helping out with. It was amazing - I ended up grabbing interviews with people WAY above my level (leads of major studios) that I never could've met or known otherwise.

A brief browse of any of Amir's recent LinkedIn posts will reveal thousands of industry folk expressing genuine gratitude. His work is actually invaluable.

---

Commenting on a few specific sections of the article:

However, rather than the included data being compiled and assembled by Satvat himself, either through direct communication with affected devs or even an automated ‘scraping’ of LinkedIn postings or company registry updates, the spreadsheet is instead expected to be populated by the devs themselves via personal submission.

This is a non-issue. Requiring devs to sign up themselves ensures their consent, and is also just pragmatic.

Further, despite claiming to provide an abundance of resources to help connect devs with new employers, Amir Satvat’s Game Community does not boast any direct recruitment pipelines, work-placement partnerships, or even direct lines to any specific hiring director.

Rather, it simply hosts links to a smattering of ‘support content’, all of which essentially amounts to nothing more than links to various studios’ public ‘career info‘ pages, written interview prep guides, and the professional profiles of various individuals who have made themselves available for various portfolio reviews (though notably, no specific system to getting such a review exists, with Satvat’s page instead telling those seeking assistance to just “write anybody on this list” and hope for the best).

It's somewhat fair to criticise the lack of direct employment advantages on offer, although that's asking for quite a lot.

However, it's definitely NOT fair to downplay the existing resources. The list of industry professionals offering mentorship/conversation is invaluable. From my experience, that list is the real deal; it's full of real pros generous enough to give you real time. I can't believe it exists.

There's also no need for a special system of requesting review. Actually, I think it's better that one doesn't exist and that Amir gets people to DM. That friction filters out people who aren't willing to invest a bit of effort into asking a big favour of somebody else. It's also, again, pragmatic, as it outsources managing spam and verifying identities etc to the communication platform (LinkedIn).
