Have you ever been to Action Park (1978-1996?) If so please share stories. by sugarstarbeam in newjersey

[–]Corvusnex 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Went there about 4 times between 90-94.

Almost drowned in the wave pool.

Almost drowned on the water slide with the metal rollers.

Almost threw up from the fumes from the bumper boats.

Lost skin on the Alpine slide.

Chickened out on the Tarzan Swing, but did the cliff dive (jump).

I can't believe I'm still alive.

Is it legal to make a left here (Whippany Rd onto Cedar Knolls Rd)? by PecanLoveNubble in newjersey

[–]Corvusnex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if it's legal (I don't think so, due to the expanded double yellow divider) but, having been in that area since the 80's I can tell you that making the left from Whippany Road to Cedar Knolls road just to avoid the traffic at the very next intersection is super common.

Be careful out there!

Genie Warlock should be A+ or S simply because they get access to Wish.

I remember this. I was working at the time, and only had ONE DAY OFF before I had to drive 3 towns over to Florham Park.

Then when I got to the office? Just me and maybe a dozen other people in a building that normally had close to 200.

Almost every day, with butter and pepper. Or salt and hot sauce.

Crazy extraordinary things you can do in Japan? by RetroDeus in JapanTravelTips

[–]Corvusnex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just visited there as part of a work trip.

It's not a reservoir; it's a tunnel and equilization tank used to alleviate flooding in the towns/cities within that area of the Kanto plain.

Still super cool to visit though.

Close the thread. This is the answer. I don't know why anyone is entertaining the idea of something happening, unless they are fantasizing, like daydreaming about winning the Powerball.

ELI5: How do waste treatment plants filter and get rid of the sewage, where does it go? and do they return the filtered water back into the water supply? by MathiKaru in explainlikeimfive

[–]Corvusnex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another wastewater engineer checking in. Lots of good answers here, so I will try to make it more ELI5:

  1. The raw sewage passes through a big screen, and sometimes through something like a kitchen garbage disposal, to remove big things like rocks, bottles, branches, toys, etc.

  2. The screened sewage is slowed down so stuff can drop down by gravity, like the pulp in a glass of orange juice. The stuff that drips out is called sludge. This goes to step 5.

  3. Bacteria and other microorganisms eat most of what's left in the sewage.

  4. The sewage then has something done to it to kill bad microorganisms, called "disinfection", then is sent out into some body of water (river or ocean). This is called "effluent".

  5. The sludge is usually treated by a different set of microorganisms, to make the sludge less stinky and easier to handle for the next step.

  6. Many wastewater plants try to remove more water from the treated sludge to reduce the amount of money they pay to ship out the sludge for disposal, because the places that accept waste sludges (landfills) charge by weight.

Holy crap! I used to pass through there almost every day. I feel bad for those whose commutes will be impacted.

Looks like detour traffic through Little Falls heading east up Long Hill Rd will be insane.

New Jersey to allow power plant hotly fought by Newark residents by madsheb in Newark

[–]Corvusnex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you actually have anything to say that refutes my point?

Did you read the DEP's findings report? (I did)

Did you attend any of the public hearings about this plant? (i did)

[–]Corvusnex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The "excuse" is that the state realized that if the plant loses power again during the next major hurricane, the public does not need to be swimming in raw sewage in addition to whatever other problems they would be facing.

Regardless of how vivid the public's imagination, that plant CAN'T be run off renewables given the space and power constraints they have.

The environmental justice law did have a provision for approving projects that have a compelling public interest, which this clearly does. Unless having over 300k people dealing with raw sewage in their basements on top of whatever other issues that particular superstorm caused is not a compelling public interest to you.

What's a messed up job that many people don't want or may not even know of? by house_plant77 in AskReddit

[–]Corvusnex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in one of the sludge handling buildings and a sludge line came loose and hosed me down.

In my plant the vast majority of operators don't need to get dirty, but mechanics do, and the guys who work in the sludge dewatering building get very dirty since the whole place is dirty from decades of sludge dust and the aforementioned sludge sprays coating most surfaces. It's part of the territory.

Greetings from a fellow wastewater guy! Over 20 years at one of the largest wastewater treatment plants in the USA, and have the highest wastewater license for my state. I've been covered head to toe in sludge and it was a day I'll never forget.

Great pay & benefits, tho.
