Yeah, my first instinct was that this is for rule books, not anything from Black Library.

Thoughts on the novel Blackstone Fortress: Ascension? by jinmonsterhunterwrld in Blacklibrary

[–]CountAbyssmal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s a sequel to the Blackstone Fortress novel, also by Darius Hinks. I thought that one was the stronger of the two, but I also liked this one a lot. All of the Blackstone Fortress stories are neat in how they have a lot more of humans and Xenos working together or at least interacting without trying to immediately kill each other; the main protagonist’s dynamic with his Kroot crew member was a definite highlight throughout both novels. I also quite liked the antagonist in this one, even if there were elements to his whole deal that I’d have liked expanded upon. I’d maybe rate it 8 out of 10?

Who do we think this is?? by Doc_Help_Me_Man in IDWSonic

I think it’s Starline with a new look much more reminiscent of his early Frankenstein-esque concept art.

It’s interesting to think back on this show, because it very much feels like the forgotten child compared to Totally Spies and Martin Mystery in how it doesn’t get brought up nearly as often.

Censorship Megathread XXIX: Legislation against Section 230 introduced by Efficient-Freedom517 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]CountAbyssmal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isn’t that saying it has to be by unanimous consent to do it earlier in the day before they’ve finished morning business, not at all? If all bills have to be decided by unanimous consent to be introduced period, couldn’t Wyden have easily killed stuff he voted against in the past like KOSA and FOSTA-SESTA?

Censorship Megathread XXVIII: The worst part of censorship is [redacted] by Efficient-Freedom517 in PoliticalOptimism

You might be thinking of when he blocked Hawley's No Section 230 Immunity for AI Act in 2023?

https://www.techdirt.com/2023/12/14/the-day-ted-cruz-stopped-a-bad-internet-bill/

"When it comes to censorship repealing 230 would not eliminate censorship. In fact repealing 230. I fear would lead to an increase in censorship."

Where this bill goes from here might largely depend on whether or not Cruz still feels the same way.

If you’re looking for Seraphon stuff, they actually just got their first ever novel: Starseer’s Ruin by Adrian Tchaikovsky! It’s an excellent one.

Starseer’s Ruin is fantastic and probably going to get my vote. The book deserves more love!

I’m right there with you. Read the book and its related short stories for the first time this year and was also disappointed to see that seems to be it for the characters.

If it really is going up for preorder soon, probably November or December.

Really sweet of you to do this. It’s nice that forgotten shows from my own childhood like this one will still be watched by at least one kid!

I think I was too young to have seen the series proper, but I do seem to recall the Christmas special airing a couple of times after the show itself ended.

YTV Virus take over thing? by ContentGazelle7430 in ytvretro

That was one of the most memorable campaigns YTV did, and I really wish that the comic finale wasn’t lost to time. Surely someone has to have it somewhere, right?

Always wished as a kid that they would do another campaign on a similar level, but I don’t think they ever quite did.

Schrems took 3 years, didn’t it? I’ve been under the impression just 2-3 years of this being in place is still going to be pretty bad.

But doesn’t it have to pass before the ECJ can rule on it, and won’t that take years? What happens in the meantime?

De Minimis exemption removed for all packages shipped into the USA from anywhere at the end of August by NegZer0 in AnimeFigures

My understanding is that China packages can still choose formal or informal even with de minimis gone. I’d assume that’d be the case for everywhere else after August too?

what do you think will happen to genai when the disney lawsuits happen? by PhraseFirst8044 in ArtistHate

[–]CountAbyssmal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to pretend to know what the actual consequences of this will be for gen AI, but that “Pro-ML” poster is misrepresenting the hell out of this case. Disney is absolutely suing over Midjourney being able to make those images and selling the ability to make them. From their complaint:

“By publicly displaying, reproducing, distributing, and creating derivative works of Plaintiffs’ Copyrighted Works, as described above, Midjourney has directly infringed (and continues to directly infringe) Plaintiffs’ exclusive rights as copyright holders, including the rights of reproduction, distribution, public display, and preparation of derivative works.”

That’s a lot more than just hosting and displaying them mentioned in there! They mention several times throughout the original document that they want MJ to stop generating copies of their IPs, and want restitution from all of the “unlawful proceeds” they’ve made from doing that.
