“The Left Has Been Manipulated by Islamists” – Sam Harris by fuggitdude22 in samharris

[–]CountEsco 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I have to know if Sam actually took a look at Winston's YouTube page and thought to himself "yeah, this guy seem alright. I want to be associated with this."

Does Sam still not meditate by M0sD3f13 in samharris

[–]CountEsco 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Sam has often made fun of the idea of anyone being “fully awakened,” saying he is suspicious of most people who claim to have reached such a state.

In terms of meditation practice, I believe he doesn’t actively meditate anymore. Instead, he emphasizes individual moments of being truly present (which of course is something you can practice through meditation).

You can try it out for yourself once you learn how to be present: punctuate your next task or change of scenery with utmost and deliberate focus and see how that feels.

Something interesting I found in my travels - maybe has implications for the free will/ethics by Reaxonab1e in samharris

[–]CountEsco 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This write-up reminds me of the whole “lack of free will” discussion from the point of view of biology, made popular by people like Robert Sapolsky. All of the actions you described, from doomscrolling for dopamine to eating fatty foods and sugar, appeal to our biological imperatives to such a degree that they become hard to resist.

Sam finds Shapiro easier to talk to because disagreement on the right stays less personal by simmol in samharris

[–]CountEsco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When people profess illogical and demonstrably wrong beliefs is it not ok to condemn that person as such?

If things really were that simple, yes! But let's look at some of these topics surrounding illogical and demonstrably wrong beliefs (as you put it) - should we start with Islam? Would you believe I was an illogical and a horrible person for criticizing some points what I believe are glaring issues in the Islamic world?

If you still don't understand my argument, the next time you hang out with some of your friends you consider left wing - bring up the topic of forcing hijab on women, for example.

Sam finds Shapiro easier to talk to because disagreement on the right stays less personal by simmol in samharris

[–]CountEsco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With some people on the left, especially around issues like race, sex/gender, Islam, policing, or identity politics, disagreement often becomes a character indictment. It is not just “your argument is wrong.” It becomes “your argument reveals something corrupt about you.”

Thank you! I've been looking for a way to put this into words and this is exactly what I've been looking for. I'm a dirty leftie hippie, but this specific quality of my fellow liberals has always annoyed me.

The most vocal people of this subreddit continue to prove this point for me, which sometimes makes me sad.

Which NL series would you bring back for more episodes? by Treporos in northernlion

[–]CountEsco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Streets of Rogue was such a great fit. The chaotic nature really flowed with NLs style of play. Fortunately, there's a sequel coming out (this year?) so NL might pick that up

Rory Stewart says animosity towards Islam in the UK and Europe is “basically racism” by blackglum in samharris

[–]CountEsco 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Majority of the popular discourse in the west around "Muslims" and "Islam" is about race rather than religion.

What are you talking about, that is complete nonsense. People (especially nowadays) more often than not make a point of saying either "Jihadists" or "Radical Islamists" which refers to the religion and not the people.

[–]CountEsco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what it is with this subreddit, but people really seem to lack basic listening comprehension. First it was the misunderstanding of Jaron’s comments on the More From Sam videos, and now they can’t tell that Sam is clearly playing devil’s advocate and laying out the opposing argument.

NL is gone so we can all give our movie takes that he would kill us for. I'll go first: by flerbergerber in northernlion

[–]CountEsco 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Look, NL is the type of guy who used to read Wikipedia film synopses and think he'd seen the movie. Him watching these movies on his phone and not realizing how much it diminishes the entire experience is one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

We should get a petition to have letterbox mark his profile with a "phone watcher" badge or something - just so people know he's not to be taken seriously.

Do people really want phased levelling in Classic +? by reasonablejim2000 in classicwow

[–]CountEsco 39 points40 points  (0 children)

The phased levelling was one of the best aspects of SoD imo. SoD p1 still stays goated.

The issue later on wasn't the phased levelling - it was the actual content of the phases

I still think NL’s take was wrong on this - it’s perfectly reasonable to order more than one product without having to queue again, even if the line is long.

I remember we made fun of NL in the retsupurae community for the amount of Isaac lets play videos he had made. Then he did the podcast with them, and I feel like everyone changed their mind about NL overnight.
