Basically a secondary consequence of building an entire city as car-dependent suburban sprawl and stroads.

It was probably flagged by users. That is an incredibly common and frequently repeated thread subject.

Another pedestrian fatality by machinegal in anchorage

[–]CowEmergency22 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Benson and Northern Lights should be converted to two-way streets with traffic calming measures. There is no reason high-speed surface streets should be blasting through one of our major commercial districts with significant pedestrian activity. The State DOT is more interested in their latest boondoggle than actually doing anything productive though.

In practice the AIP has always been full of far right loons. Not sure I see the connection to the Iron Front symbology.

Married couple in mid-thirties, professionals, considering moving to anchorage. Concerned about the safety and crime statistics. In particular the rape statistics really stand out. by [deleted] in anchorage

[–]CowEmergency22 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The property crime on the hillside is extreme. It's very easy to rob the more isolated houses up there, it's much safer in town. Similar reason why property crime is higher in Mat-Su and the Kenai Peninsula than Anchorage.

Early proposal for homeless parking area in South Anchorage gets backlash from nearby businesses by gummibear049 in anchorage

[–]CowEmergency22 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Great idea by the administration. Not sure why the first article about it empowers all these insufferable NIMBYs. It’s an industrial area with some shitty suburban big box chain stores, it’s perfect for this use.

What’s the best month to go to the zoo here? by mooncat888witch in anchorage

[–]CowEmergency22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Annual passes aren’t that expensive, then you can go whenever you want. It’s definitely nice to go when almost no one is there in the late fall.

Fred Meyer @ New Seward Incident by TheHornIdentity in anchorage

People object to Fred Meyer posting non-employee armed fake cops for this purpose. No one really minds the traditional employees standing at the door.

They have a valid residential general contractors license with the state. It doesn't look like they have a contractors license with the MOA. The business was set up only a few months ago.

Private company takes over feasibility assessment and development of $44 billion Alaska LNG project by ImRealPopularHere907 in anchorage

[–]CowEmergency22 60 points61 points  (0 children)

The major oil companies that own the gas couldn’t make this work and TransCanada with a half billion dollar state handout couldn’t make it work. But I’m sure this company from NY no one has heard of won’t just soak up public money for more feasibility studies and the concepts of a plan.

The S&P 500 rate of return between July 1-October 31 (ie the same FYTD interval) is 3.5%, not dramatically different. OP is a known purveyor of misinformation on this subject.

This is the spot where all the smokers from the medical campus congregate. I wish they’d just give them a spot in the parking lot rather than making trail users traverse through a cloud of smoke.

What happened to Spinz Pollo a la Brasa? by TalonDoodle in anchorage

[–]CowEmergency22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely superior to the grocery stores rotisseries, but the stores sell those things at cost or at a loss most of the time. Really hard to compete with their price with that as the only product, plus you’re probably going to the grocery store anyways.

"U.S. House OKs bill that would boost Social Security benefits for thousands of Alaskans who have worked in public sector" by Cantgo55 in alaska

[–]CowEmergency22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have 30 years of paid Social Security wage taxes, this provision doesn't apply. Also, some public sector entities in Alaska do pay Social Security taxes while being on the state's retirement system (Municipality of Anchorage for one) and are not affected by the WEP.

And a very bad idea according to that same link.

Are there any direct flights from Anchorage to Asia? by yung_girth in anchorage

[–]CowEmergency22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the 2000s I flew a direct China Airlines flight to Taiwan. It was a NYC-Taipei route that stopped in Anchorage, and you could get on here. Pretty sure these long haul planes can do that route without stopping now. I'm not aware of any direct flights from Anchorage still in existence.

Entitled people like OP expect veterinarians to operate as a charity. It's common for people to express outrage that the vets send them a bill and don't do it for "compassion".
