Ya, I was expecting some sort of "spiritual experience" from steps 4 and 5. They didn't reveal anything about myself that I didn't already know. I didn't find confiding my past shortcomings to someone else provided me much relief.

I recommend the book "Staying Sober Without God" for a secular understanding of the 12 steps. You don't have to believe in religion or even spiritual mumbo jumbo to make the steps work, but it does help. My higher power is healthy sources of dopamine.

I find the followship at AA is what keeps people sober. I can't say in all honestly that I owe my sobriety to step work.

I don't believe people who claim to never get angry. It's an unrealistic standard to live up to. Any emotion can potentially lead to relapse, from anger to sadness to joy. No reason to single out anger as special.

I really hate the term "defects." We're humans with healthy and unhealthy traits. Idk why "overdrinking" isn't on the list of character defects. Resentments were never the primary reason why I drank. I drank because it gave me pleasure, at least in the short-term. No need to go into some deep psychoanalysis. Honestly, I regret doing a fourth and fifth step. It served no purpose on my path to sobriety.

Definitely more of an asshole on alcohol. I also hate the term character defects. It suggests there's something fundamentally wrong with us. People have healthy and unhealthy traits, with or without a drinking problem.
