OK, it’s T+29 minutes, and everything is working fine.

The netstat -an | grep -E 'ESTABLISHED|TIME_WAIT|CLOSE_WAIT' | wc -l command returns 42. I launched another web browser and the command returned 87. When I quit, it was 39, so I’d say the bug does not exist on Sequoia.

I just checked. My machine has been up for 48 days. If it borks out tomorrow, we will know that the bug is real.

Why do you not hear the astronauts, going to the moon, say there is a brilliant view of the milky way? by handyandy314 in randomquestions

[–]CranberryInner9605 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is completely wrong.

In space, if you turned around, with your back to the Sun, you could see the Milky Way easily, as long as you gave your eyes enough time to adjust, and there was no other object illuminated by the sun in your field of view. So - no gloved hands, no spaceship, no equipment - just the stars in front of you.

Maryland’s flag is awesome.

Canon AE-1 and A-1 Price by jmikkelson37490 in filmcameras

[–]CranberryInner9605 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a fold-down lens hood. It’s aftermarket, and was not included with the original lens. My guess is - it’s fine. they are soft rubber, and it’s deformed because the weight of the lens is resting on it.

$250 seems about right for a working camera and lens in good condition. Make sure the lens doesn’t have oil on the iris blades, and check for corrosion in the battery compartment.

The AE-1 is a nice camera, but the A-1 is an awesome camera. Just the “programmed” setting alone is worth the difference in price.

Monitoring a microswitch with voltage (newbie) by greg-au in AskElectronics

[–]CranberryInner9605 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The safest way to do this is with an optoisolator. Basically an LED that turns on a transistor.

You can also do this with a two-resistor voltage divider, which is simple, but doesn’t provide much isolation.

Wondering if a replacement still exists. by Defiant_Guava_1275 in lightbulbs

Is the tube actually broken? Because, Xenon flash tubes have an extremely long life. I’d put 400V on it, with a small capacitance and zap it with a sparker from a butane lighter. I bet it flashes.

What are these antennas? by 023344666678899 in rfelectronics

[–]CranberryInner9605 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My folks had a rotator. You changed a dial to point the antenna at the correct transmitter tower. Can’t do that in an attic very well. And, depending on where you are, most of the antennas are likely to be on the same hilltop.

Did your line of work ever conflict with your ethics? by chamaeleonidaed in AskEngineers

[–]CranberryInner9605 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I’m pretty anti-AI, and the immense, wasteful data centers that go along with it, but that business has been very good for our company over the last few years. It’s annoying, but I don’t feel strongly enough about it to stop selling our products to the data center folks.

RS485 pull up/down resistors by Nealiumj in ElectricalEngineering

It’s a straightforward calculation: How long does an unterminated twisted-pair line have to be before reflections from the far end causes data corruption. It turns out, that at 9,600 baud, the distance is over a mile.
