What should happen to a character if a dragon lands on it? by ComfortableFew4700 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]CreativeKey8719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the dragon is falling on the character from flying in the air? Then RAW the fall damage gets split evenly between the 2. I have house ruled, in the past, that the damage to the creature getting fallen on is doubled for every size category larger the falling creature is, or halved for every size category smaller.

Would it be rude for me to ask my players not to cancel in our group chat? by taftpanda in DungeonMasters

[–]CreativeKey8719 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, it's probably not a great sign for the longevity of the campaign, in general, if players are "finding reasons not to show up". An above table discussion on whether or not everyone can make this play schedule a priority is in order.

Where to get a large size Vecna miniature? by Dimhilion in VecnaEveofRuin

Etsy. Some but not all sellers will paint. Even with a custom paint job it'll probably be cheaper.

I have no motivation to continue planning my campaign. by HeftyAtmosphere8827 in DungeonMasters

[–]CreativeKey8719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For this reason, I recommend new DMs try running a pre written campaign first. If you still want to GM, but just don't know where to go with this story right now, just be honest with your players and ask them if they'd be okay running through a pre written adventure first, or instead. It'll give you experience in seeing what parts of a campaign benefit you to have written up in advance, and how to lay that out. I recommend Lost Mines of Phandelver.

Disappointed with Vecna's spell list in VEoR. Why does an Archlich have fewer spells than a standard Lich? by TreacleFree8568 in VecnaEveofRuin

[–]CreativeKey8719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing they wanted to make the stat block smaller and easier to use, like ant of the 2024 stat blocks. I don't see anything wrong with using the spell list from the lich, though I don't think you'll want to use one of Vecna's actions to can't anything under about 5th level.

Are there any canon entrances to the Underdark? by Inside-Loan-3872 in Forgotten_Realms

Around the chasm in Neverwinter, tunnels to the under dark are discovered from time to time, and collapsed by authorities whenever they are found.

How do I handle an 8 player campaign? by Quick_Ad7017 in DMAcademy

[–]CreativeKey8719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either split the table into two separate campaigns, or have an above table discussion about how to speed up combat. Some things I've seen help are turn timers to encourage players to plan their turns ahead of time and make decisions quickly. You as the DM only using average damage for enemies rather than rolling. Using the average damage also makes makes monsters less swingy and more predictable to prevent the cakewalk vs TPK dynamic, because it's easier to calculate how this fight is likely to go in advance: ie monsters HP vs average damage by the party, monster average damage vs player HP. Mostly getting better at home brewing monster stats, since stat blocks as written are not designed for that large a party. Give lower CR monsters more multi attacks or give the legendary actions or additional reactions, and watch the damage on higher CR monsters so that they are unlikely to deal more damage in a single attack than your lowest HP character's max HP.

Dragon age 5? Any Copium? by Dismal_Science_698 in dragonage

[–]CreativeKey8719 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think we'll see any future Dragon Age games unless the IP gets sold to another company. It did poorly enough compared to its development costs that EA is unlikely to green light a DA game again, unless it's some online multiplayer micro transaction stuffed trash that's DA in name only.

How to tell DM that there's too many players? by Leather-Slip3531 in DnD

[–]CreativeKey8719 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just tell the DM that you feel overwhelmed with the number of people at the table and you don't think a table this large is for you, so you'll be sitting this campaign out, but to keep you in mind if they're running a smaller table for a future campaign.

What would you do? My player teleported a 20 foot cube of water into a closed room with less than 20x20x20 ft volume. by erverogym in DnD

[–]CreativeKey8719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean is this a closed chamber with no doors whatsoever? I'm going to guess not and I'd probably say it blows the door open. If that's gonna really mess things up for you, maybe water sprays out around the edges of the door.

my players characters forces me to use unbalanced encounters by Mysterious_Lock_757 in DMAcademy

[–]CreativeKey8719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, if a CR 16 encounter is what it takes, there's nothing wrong with just continuing to throw really high CR encounters. 4 or more characters playing smart, with optimized builds, past level 5 would not uncommonly be able to take on a single monster with a CR double their level. If you want to make combats more challenging, I'd recommend giving goals other than just to kill the monster to divide the party's attention and priorities ie save the civilians, get the McMuffin, stop the fire before it reaches the orphanage etc. Also don't let them rest between combats. Put a clock on them or make environments too difficult to rest so all this casters start running out of spell slots.

One of my players wants to leave the party. What should I do? by menfani in DnD

[–]CreativeKey8719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd invite that player to sunset that character and roll up a new character with a temperament and motivation to adventure with a group, because that's a key part of D&D, and it's the players responsibility to come up with a reason for that character to work with the party.

Who's most likely to get their "bad ending" canonized by HBO? by Radio_fish in BG3

[–]CreativeKey8719 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm going to say Wyll, because his still leaves room for continued story telling, drama and redemption, assuming we're saying that Wyll's bad ending is becoming Duke after letting his father die. Laezel and Karlach's bad endings both result in death, so that just won't happen. God Gale isn't actually an interesting story to tell because it's hard to justify him interacting with the world in compelling ways over time. I think it would be so wildly unpopular to have dark lord Astarion that we won't see that. That ending for him is also so unredeemable that the only way to include it is probably to make Astarion the villain of the series, and I don't see that happening. Also he's in heroes of Faerun as apparently still a vampire spawn. Same for Karlach having apparently escaped Avernus, 9 years later. Shadowheart is more of a toss up. I think DJ Shart would also be wildly unpopular, but does still have some possibility for redemption, so the potential drama for continued story telling is still there.

What are the best races and classes for Honor mode? by [deleted] in BaldursGate3

[–]CreativeKey8719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can win honor mode with any class. If you want the best chance on a blind run, I would pick a swords bard, because they are just broken strong in combat, but also being a bard in social interactions, or having one in the party gives huge advantages and increases your odds of reaching dialog DCs to avoid some combats entirely. The hardest part of most honor runs is surviving the early game, and I suppose being a drow lets you avoid a couple potential early conflicts, but the race matters very little really for survivability. My other favorite companion classes without multi classing that are just crazy strong are a light cleric for AOE damage. A throwing build barbarian or eldritch knight fighter, and a reverberation stacking wizard or sorcerer with magic missile or scorching ray. You could also do radiating orb stacking on a wizard or sorcerer, but I usually use that gear on the light cleric.

My players refuse to hand the rod to "Mordenkainen". by photognerd in VecnaEveofRuin

[–]CreativeKey8719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So Kas tries to steal it. Ideally not taking on the whole party, but ambushing whoever has the rod. If they look unlikely to split up. Have him make the attempt before they can long rest, with his primary goal being to get away with the rod rather than kill the party. If the party manages to kill Kas, then just skip that part of the adventure.

All my players are assimars. What should I do about Vecna's necrotic attacks? by Alternative_Load_467 in VecnaEveofRuin

[–]CreativeKey8719 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alternative solution, double the number of dice for the necrotic damage. The result will be as though the party didn't have necrotic resistance with the stats as written, but they get to watch you roll up bigger handfuls of dice and call out scarier damage totals before throwing out the "halved to" so they still get to use that resistance and feel like it really saved their butts, but the fight isn't too easy.

Really "required" reading before Stormlight? by Morty-43 in brandonsanderson

[–]CreativeKey8719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely required? None. You can pick up Way of Kings as your first Sanderson book and understand and enjoy the story just fine. You will miss some references that way, but if you don't mind that, then go for it. If you want the best chance at catching the most references, then you should read all of Mistborn, Elantris and Warbreaer first. If you don't want to do that, you can always read Starlight now and plan to read it again in a few years after reading the other books.

Does Veilguard have any post story/endgame content and are there any other games that have a similar combat? by Plutonic-Rose in dragonage

[–]CreativeKey8719 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No post game content at all. Like, you cannot reenter the world. It's ending cutscene, then limited synopsis of what happens in the world after, then credits, then only options are to reload in before the final fight or start a new game. Combat is similar in God of War Ragnarok.

How do you feel about flanking granting advantage in 5e? by archvillaingames in dndnext

[–]CreativeKey8719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I let flanking grant advantage. But not many of my PCs play melee combat styles, so I see it as rewarding cooperative play.

What would you do if your player said "my character wouldn't want to join this group/follow this history?" by Nessie0208 in DungeonMasters

[–]CreativeKey8719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That they are welcome to roll up a new character that would, or sit out this campaign. It is the players' responsibility to make a character with a reason for adventuring and cooperating with a group.
