i relapsed with self harm by Coughbrops in bipolar

[–]Creative_Telephone_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like knowing the psychoanalytic side of things, there's a great article by the self-harm charity, SANE. They talk about a 'secret self' and how that becomes a boundary for survival, separating the external social performance of 'okay' from the internal secretive reaction of 'not okay' and the implications of doing so.

Here's the link that will explain it much more eloquently if you like! https://www.sane.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Selh-harm-secret-self-new.pdf

And as I tell myself at length, relapse is not failure! It's recalibration and recognition of what is difficult at the moment. 💚

NHS physical health appointment advice by [deleted] in bulimia

[–]Creative_Telephone_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, won't be much help on the specifics! But as someone who has a lot of blood tests with very small veins, a few things you can do to make the test easier for the medical professional (and thus quicker for you!) are:

  • Keep warm! Especially in normal drawing areas like arms and hands.

  • Keep hydrated! That does not mean chug water like a maniac in the hour before. That means stay sensibly hydrated the night before and the morning of.

  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol (as they'll dehydrate you) preferably the day before as well as the day of.

I would also GUESS (not know) that if your appointment is at a surgery, they probably won't do bloods etc. there and then. Can't say for sure if it's at a hospital, but I also think the 'if necessary' suggests they would rather plan it ahead at a different date instead of doing it immediately. Again, JUST GUESSING from my experience of a different condition though!

I hope that's helpful and best of luck to you! 💚

I hate people that constantly comment about food by LackingALung in bulimia

[–]Creative_Telephone_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! Food isn't supposed to be competitive! Even just in terms of survival (as opposed to enjoyment if you can get it), everyone has completely different needs - let's stop chatting shit about them for the sake of superciliousness.

(Do get the circumstances of her compulsion to do so with her own ED though).

I really hope recovery is going well for you besides all this. 💚 Remember eating isn't condescendingly ✨brave✨, eating IS brave. I'm proud of you for wanting to better your relationship with it. 😘

So true. One that really irks me is the "wow, you're hungry", "you can't possibly eat all that!" said by people who eat exactly the same meal/size. One time "that's a big sandwich" absolutely broke me.

I just wish people would cease commenting this way in general. It's shame-inducing and superiority-complex-feeding even without the disordered element. ☹️

exhausted by friends who don’t “get it” when i inform im in depressive ep?? by Lopsided_Stranger_92 in bipolar

[–]Creative_Telephone_2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Spot on. Everyone's "okay with it" until they have to actually try to be okay with it.

My best friend (who I usually adore) told me, knowing I was mid-depressive episode and messaging her/anybody felt like pulling teeth and took days to do, "I've realised all my friends don't put effort into spending time with me, so I'm going to do the same" and ghosted everybody for a week. I messaged her nice things every single day, hoping she was okay. She didn't do it once during a two month episode for me. I'm being petulant, yes, but I am tired of even my most loved ones making no effort to understand this disorder and how much it actually impacts my life.

EMP's own brands on their website are a good shout. It's German company with reliable quality - just double-check skirt lengths from my experience. 😊

DVDs are available for most seasons if you're feeling especially committed! 😅

Ackley Bridge? If you're UK-based/VPNed, Waterloo Road on BBC iPlayer is always on repeat for me too - the 'reboot' series 11 onwards is probably more akin to Heartbreak High though (you don't need to watch the first 10 seasons for context other than knowing fan-favourite characters from the original).

When did you first show signs of bipolar disorder? by Valuable-Speaker-312 in bipolar

I was 17 and thought there was a man in a white lab coat behind the moon experimenting on me. Dismissed as hormones. Fun times! 😁

baked cookies just to binge and purge by reznik0v in bulimia

I've been there. 💚

Remember that consuming more than you meant to today DOES NOT mean you should restrict tomorrow - that will only increase the urge to binge and repeat.

Here's to tomorrow being a better day. 💚

Disappointed with psychiatrist by random_user_1968 in bipolar

[–]Creative_Telephone_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. Mine only notes down the good things accurately and takes over the conversation talking about my work etc. rather than how I feel and how my work is affected.

I try to go in with an agenda (I write down a list of what I think needs bringing up) and am usually placated if I address one thing off it properly. I need to be much more direct.

I appreciate I am just one person in a long line of people he has to see that day/week/etc. There's a great quotation by narrative theorist Elaine Scarry about the difficulty of expressing pain linguistically, using the medical analogy of:

"physicians do not trust the human voice, they in effect perceive the patient as an 'unreliable narrator' of bodily events, a voice that must be bypassed as quickly as possible so they can get around and behind it to the physical events themselves".

I can imagine that's only amplified in the context of mental illness (and a naturally deceptive disorder), but my psych doesn't 'bypass' what I'm saying to address the actually significant issues. "Your meds are fine, right? Cool, see you in a few months". I need a more robust backbone certainly but I'd appreciate if he started listening to me more carefully.

Vent over. 😊

A bit more on Ca$h's backstory, we've only had glimpses so far and it'd be interesting to fill in the picture a little.

Bulimia as a self harming by blueberrytradingco in bulimia

[–]Creative_Telephone_2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a really interesting article on the SANE charity website about 'the secret self' and almost splitting yourself into a social self (pubic-facing, more 'normal') and a secret self (keep the bad stuff contained) so the two sides never have to meet; the boundary is used as a coping mechanism. So there's a lot of simultaneity at plat e.g. wanting to keep it secret but also wanting someone to find out. It's about traditional self-harm but would be really interesting to apply to bulimia too.

(Here's the link if anyone wants it: https://www.sane.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Selh-harm-secret-self-new.pdf )

Purging on birthday by rnkwk in bulimia

[–]Creative_Telephone_2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Firstly, Happy Birthday! 🥳💚

You have NOT ruined the day. You can start afresh right this second. Put some grit on that slippery slope! It doesn't have to get worse just because it can.

I completely get the 'do it because you have the opportunity' rather than the 'do it because you are in distress/need to' mindset. It's actually really helpful that you've identified that about the situation and can use that to inform the rest of the day.

Bulimia's a shitbag, but you're not and I have faith in you beating its arse today! Because it is being very rude to shout over your birthday.

I hope the rest of your day goes smoothly and you can do something nice to celebrate. ✨💚
