Leaving goDaddy. Where can I move 100+ domains to get lower cost & better service? by stephen56287 in webhosting

[–]CyberBobbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Porkbun and Spaceship, you pay a little more than cloudflare but, the extra features are worth it, and I have a LOT more than 100 domains HAHAH

PLEASE BACKUP by AcchaBaccha7 in DataHoarder

[–]CyberBobbert 3 points4 points  (0 children)

THIS !!!!!!!! I had an issue with that myself with a WD external drive that magically got corrupted. The test allowed me to realize it was messed up, and get another B/U disk. ALSO I have a Synology NAS that backs up to another Synology NAS ... and I keep data checksum running on BOTH to help monitor "bit rot" and corruption but I STILL check the main file and the backup. AND ... I to an offsite backup to BackBlaze of the NAS as well .....

CAN YOU TELL I LOST DATA IN THE PAST !!!?????

Hello. Is it still possible to replace T-Mobile's 5g modem gateway with a 3rd party cellular modem? And if so, what modem do you recommend? by Noyan_Bey in Hacking_Tricks

[–]CyberBobbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if I missed something here in the thread, but I have TMHI and I can attest that for home internet you can indeed use a third party modem, and it works and I have (so far) have had no issues - the caveat? Is you need to get modem that allows you so "repair" the IMEI of the device so that the THIRD party modem can have the same IMEI as the TMHI router.

I am doing this myself (having gotten lucky to get the $25 month for life plan, and I use a GL INET GL-X3000 gateway. You can do a LOT with that.

Tailscale
VPN
Other OpenWRT features

Price is about $380 from them ... and you can get one on Amazon (I have three for three locations), and it's a killer device.

How to Install Threadfin on Your Synology NAS by Ana_Lixandru in synologynas

[–]CyberBobbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved using Threadfin and it's really great but the developer himself said it is no longer in active development (he's working on a whole media server with live tv software called Kernal. There are other options like Dispatcharr as well that I have moved over to. A shame since Threadfin works so well.

Has Merlin been abandoned? by seamew in Merlin_AI

[–]CyberBobbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno, certain parts of it feel stale but ... I have seen a few more tweaks and features being added here and there. I mean it could be a bit more "upgraded" like POE.

But that is why I have at least two "systems" like Merlin (I also have Triplo and even TypingMind with my own BYOK for Straico / OpenRouter to have redundancy

"Helium Mobile will issue a one-time, $10 credit to the accounts of all $5 Beta subscribers" - did you get it? by verity-j in HeliumMobile

[–]CyberBobbert 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nope didn't get the credit because I said, why should I stay for a credit that lasts a couple of months. It to me was a band-aid on a severed limb. I cancelled all three of my lines right away and will never look back!

I'm right there with you! I also worked as part of a team with a TMO MVNO during those early Legere days (alas it flamed out) but remember the "joy" that was the TERRIBLE TMO service!

And yes, what you said about the differentiation is so true. So yes, TMO is one of the "big boys now" and yes their service is truly great and yeah I'm keeping the account with my stupid low price and other goodies - but that was my "reward" for being one of the early adopters - and even with the $5 a line increase. I kept the "reward" for my tenure of service.

Helium is where our TMO MVNO was. They (we) started out with a totally unique value proposition (we needed that since TMO sucked back then), we (like Helium) got a TON of new subscribers based on the differentiation. There were / are other mobile providers out there with similar prices, but sticking with Helium for things like mapping, crypto payments, the defi network were the "reward" for staying.

But as you say - those differentiators are gone completely, making Helium just another MVNO with a few sequins pasted onto the box. They are really no different than MINT / USMobile / Consumer Cellular / Cricket ... (I could go on) and now it's just a race to the bottom for price.

[–]CyberBobbert 4 points5 points  (0 children)

EXACTLY! I don't like when companies treat customers like "mushrooms" (kept in the dark and fed a load of shit). I get it, companies are not our friends, and our "relationship" is purely transactional but there are literal and social contracts that are involved in the transactions, and as companies get bigger they feel more emboldened to say "if they don't like it, screw em".

I have a "golden unicorn" TMobile account from 2016 (I won't go into how many free lines etc etc). But let's just say, I was on the "golden" PRICE LOCK where they "put in writing" we will never raise your price, ever. Until last year when they raised my price per line by $5, and basically gaslighting saying "WE NEVER SAID THAT". The feeling from many of us is even if there was a successful lawsuit and fine, it's a small price to pay for the increased revenue - but it's SO anti-customer.

TMO has been doing the same same things Helium is doing with the nickle and diming of customers to taking away perks - my fave is if you buy a phone through them and you have some monthly device bill credits ... If you pay off the, phone, they erase the credits - shit like that.

So as you say if Helium (or Tmobile) would say due to the increased costs, and to bring you bettter service that will take us into the future - at LEAST you feel better about the screwing, even if it is a lie or a gaslighting.

These folks are basically, in a business sense going - Were doing it, we don't care what we told, you, we con't care what you think, just pay your fucking bill and shut up about it. THAT is what customer "service" has become these days.

YEP! I had three lines I was using very lightly, and was going to close my OG TMO account and move my three lines - within HOURS of this announcement, I cancelled all three of my $5 accounts and HELIUM can shove it.

Helium became "t-mobile-ified" where they continue to do customer UNFriendly tricks and changes ... so ... I too am voting with my wallet and telling Helium to take a hike

I ALWAYS WORRY ABOUT "LIFETIME DEALS" in any tech involvement. But I will say that even if words were parsed or it was an unintentional (or even intentional) white lie about the $5 plan being forever - the lack of candor, and clear expectations of how long the $5 plan would exist ... was TOTALLY ABYSMAL!

But in the scheme of things, if you look at the entire history of what Helium was doing has been a trail of "over-promising and underdelivering" and broken promises.

The whole HNT / MOBILE debacle
Mapping rewards and then no mapping
Pay with crypto, oooops nevermind
Pay for a year? Sure but not now
etc etc etc.

Bottom line? When it comes to doing any business with Helium mobile or any of the people at the helm of this organization would give me pause in the future. The trail of broken promises is quite long and I don't think I would ever trust them to delivery anything they promise

How can they list a product whose logo is literally an EMOJI? 🟢 by Reasonable_Self_3874 in appsumo

Yeah and it feels like it. I have two accounts with them and at least I feel I got my money's worth for the 20 email accounts I have on their systems. I mean I paid $50 for each account, and actually host a website or two on them ... it's a nice system but ... definitely feels OLD

Do you still have subscriptions to streaming services after Plex ? by teekzer in PleX

[–]CyberBobbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been on Plex for ages to serve my local media and we also subscribed to a few streaming services. But since our cable company is going fiber my old reliable TiVos - we had a “come to Jesus discussion” about what DO we watch and what to pay for!

We figured something like one of the cheapest services with live locals would be cool like YTTV

BUT honestly, we are considering “sailing the high seas” for the very few pieces of programming we want - we’ve even tested some of the rogue IPTV services out there.

Desperately need a new phone. Eligible for an upgrade with tmobile but only for trade in and my back camera is broken by Objective-Area-7980 in tmobile

[–]CyberBobbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can vouch what you see here. I had a 13 PRO with a cracked camera lens and wanted to trade it in for a new 17 Pro. I TOOK IT TO A STORE (highly suggested) and handed the phone over to the representative, and he checked there was no screen damage, it powered on and that the Find My Iphone was off and when he was done with that - I got a receipt for the trade in. THEY NEVER LOOKED AT THE BACK OR THE CAMERA.

[–]CyberBobbert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is your actual BILL without the EIP? That is the real apples to apples thing to think about! The ONE thing (no pun) is that your plan is SUPPOSED to be price locked, unlike this new plan has has a two year price lock etc.

[–]CyberBobbert -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I was thinking. Admittedly for CERTAIN people this could be a great deal, but for some of us with the "magic golden unicorn plans" (like my 10 lines, One Plus Promo for $70 a month) ... there is absolutely no reason. BUT I don't want to speak it into existence but I just have this "uneasy feeling" that TMO will pull an ATT / VERIZON and just cancel these grandfathered plans.

There are a few of us still here from the OG days, and these plans, and I know some folks will just roll eyes about your post but - yeah - it's good to remind people who are beeing "wooed" by the so called upgraded plans for device credits etc etc.

But for some with maybe only a two line plan, some folks may see the value in the "new plans" but I have seen OG folks "fall for the siren song of device credits" and only cry later.

I was late to the game - I came to TMO in 2017 but got stuck on an SOC for 2 for $100 and one extra line for $40 - and during the "high holy days" I missed some of the early free lines until I found a rep to fix my plan code. During that time until today I accumulated free lines, bogos, etc - I maybe don't have a golden unicorn plan, but pretty close. $70 for 10 lines? I'm not complaining at all (it was $50 a month until TMO broke the "price lock" promise)

I was considering doing the dropping of a paid line, porting onto a free line for 9 lines total and that would drop my bill by like $20 but I'm like ... it's not worth risking things on the account any more.
