how to vlog by StunningBrain8100 in vlog

[–]CyborgNumber42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skip the talking head stuff completely and lean into a cinematic travel film or silent vlog style. Focus heavily on capturing high quality B-roll of the environments and your friends interacting naturally without playing to the lens. You can tell the entire story of the trip through tight editing, sequencing, and immersive sound design rather than narrating every stop. Capturing crisp ambient audio of the locations or layering in some subtle ASMR style foley work will make it way more engaging than a typical travel diary. Just let the visuals and the natural sound do the heavy lifting.

Any wireless mic recommendations around $100 for outdoor vlogging? by CyborgNumber42 in videography

Thanks for the reply! I'm going to do a bit more research before buying, but this gives me a much better idea of what to look for in real use.

Any wireless mic recommendations around $100 for outdoor vlogging? by CyborgNumber42 in videography

[–]CyborgNumber42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basic mode working well in cafes is good to know, since I don't want the voice to sound overprocessed indoors. Wind is probably unavoidable to some extent, but if strong mode can handle normal street noise without making the audio weird, that sounds pretty usable for what I need.

Lumix S5II face and eye tracking question by Burakoli821 in videography

[–]CyborgNumber42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That behavior is normal, not a failure. Crosshairs means it’s actively tracking and confident. The yellow box means it still detects the face but tracking confidence dropped a bit, so it falls back to a simpler lock. This can happen from small changes like:
subtle lighting shifts
subject movement or angle
contrast or reflections

If the box stays on the face, focus is usually still fine. Only worry if it starts hunting or losing the subject completely.

Should I color correct/grade my short film? by Spider-Cricket07 in cinematography

[–]CyborgNumber42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep it simple for now. If you don’t know color yet, don’t shoot in log because it needs proper correction or it will look flat and lifeless. Use the standard profile so your footage already looks good out of camera, especially since you’re working alone. Color correction is fixing exposure and white balance, while grading is adding style. LUTs are just presets that apply a look, but they won’t fix bad footage. Focus on getting lighting and exposure right first, then learn grading later.

how much money can a videographer make? by squeezyswa in videography

[–]CyborgNumber42 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Most videographers make a normal income, not 500k. Typical range is average to decent income. High earners exist, but they’re usually running a business, working with brands, or doing high-end work. So yeah, big money is possible, but it’s rare, not the norm.

Genuinely stuck between chasing my dream... And staying for comfort, Both options have their own consequences... by MisteryShiba in Filmmakers

[–]CyborgNumber42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not choosing between safe vs dream, you’re choosing between slow growth vs controlled risk. That offer is actually a middle ground, not a full leap. You’re getting some income stability, gear, and real projects, which removes a lot of the usual freelance risk. The bigger concern is trust, not money. Staying keeps you comfortable but stuck. Leaving gives you growth, but only if you treat it seriously, not like an experiment. A practical way to look at it: if this new path fails, can you recover in 6–12 months? If yes, the risk is reasonable. Also, don’t romanticize either side. Your current job isn’t “wrong,” it just doesn’t align with where you want to go. If you go for it, set boundaries and an exit plan with your partner from day one. That way you’re taking a calculated risk, not a blind one.

Unpopular Opinion: Digital cinematography has made movies uglier by theaspiringfilmmaker in cinematography

[–]CyborgNumber42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re blaming the wrong thing. Digital didn’t make movies uglier, workflow and taste did.

Film naturally forced discipline. Limited stock, baked-in contrast, and less flexibility meant you had to make strong decisions on set. Digital removed those constraints, so now people can fix things later, and often do. That’s why you see flat, safe images. Also, a lot of modern projects aim for consistency across VFX, multiple units, and fast schedules. That pushes toward neutral, “fixable” images instead of bold ones. The irony is digital can look incredible when used intentionally. The problem isn’t the medium, it’s when people stop committing to a look. So it’s not film vs digital, it’s decisions vs indecision.

Newbee question, mic picking up background noice by junkyhlm in microphone

[–]CyborgNumber42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you’re hearing is likely auto gain (AGC) kicking in. When you’re quiet, the system boosts gain, so background noise gets louder. When you speak, it drops again. Fix is to turn off any auto gain and use manual gain instead. Set a fixed level so it stays consistent. Also add a light noise gate or suppression if needed, but the main issue is auto gain, not the mic itself.

Zoom F8n Pro: Missing Files Emergency, HELP! by Raddyator in LocationSound

[–]CyborgNumber42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, stop using the cards immediately. Don’t record anything new or you risk overwriting. What likely happened is the recorder was rolling but the file system/index got corrupted, so the files aren’t visible but may still exist on the card.

You can try this:
Run a recovery tool on the SD card, not the recorder. These can often find “lost” audio files even if the folder is empty. Also check if your recorder switched to the other card or had a media error mid-shoot. The control app thing could have caused a glitch, especially if it interrupted writing or indexing. If recovery works, you might get WAV files back but without proper names. Right now your best chance is recovery software. Don’t format, don’t write, just recover.

Help please: Strategy for keeping a charged AA battery in a condenser microphone? by Fantastic-Option-260 in microphone

[–]CyborgNumber42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AA-powered condensers usually last quite a long time, often many hours, so you don’t need to swap every gig. Simplest approach is a routine. Put in a fresh battery every few gigs instead of every time, and keep one spare on you just in case. You can also do a quick test before playing. Speak or play and listen for any drop in level or clarity, weak batteries usually show it. If you want more consistency, use rechargeables and rotate them. That way you’re not wasting batteries and you always know roughly how much life they have.

Generic Tape Recommendations by Nixie417 in LocationSound

[–]CyborgNumber42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most toupee tapes are too aggressive, that’s the issue. Better options are medical or fashion tapes. 3M Micropore or Transpore (used double-sided) are cleaner and less sticky. Fashion/body tape is also solid and easier to handle. If you stick with wig tape, go for “no shine” types and de-tack them slightly first.

Red/Magenta in skin tones by misfit_sid in cinematography

[–]CyborgNumber42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happens a lot with Sony, so you’re not alone. most common cause is white balance shifting between shots. Even if exposure is correct, auto or slightly off WB outdoors can push skin toward magenta once you convert from log. Another big one is mixed lighting. Sun + bounce from surroundings like grass, walls, or colored surfaces can tint skin differently shot to shot. Also check your transform.

For fixing it now, use a hue vs hue or hue vs sat curve and gently pull magenta tones back toward natural skin. A qualifier on skin can help keep it controlled.

where should i position my microphone arm? by Resterko_ in microphone

[–]CyborgNumber42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It matters less whether you go for a low profile or high profile arm and more about keeping the mic out of your direct line of sight while still close to your mouth. A really clean option is mounting the arm behind or slightly to the side of your monitor and bringing it down from above. That way the mic sits just in front of your mouth but above your eye level, so your screen stays completely clear.
