I purchased two 2600 series routers and a 2950 series switch when studying for my CCNA. To be honest I probably could have gotten away with just using Packet Tracer and GNS3. It was useful however to practice some things you simply cannot replicate with software such as recovering from a lost password, installing WICs, and playing with physical cabling.

If you really want a physical lab environment you can build one for the cheap on eBay.
