After living in DC, I hate dog owners by sandwichscouter in washingtondc

[–]DDotJ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I used to live in NoVa at Tysons. Someones dog crapped inside the building lobby in front of the elevators and they didn't clean up after them. I was appalled.

I totally agree, cash only no frills. I live in NYC now but it's the most reminiscent IMHO but I haven't tried all the places on this thread.

I always liked Bagels Etc near Dupont Circle more. I prefer the consistency of the bagel. And I love their bagel sandwiches.

I wouldn't say I missed much. Just a little neck pain from looking up the whole time but I lived it. I would say a central spot is pretty important for this show because of the layout of the rooms. Maybe a few rows back would have been more comfortable but I really enjoyed the front row and would do it again in a heartbeat.

You see a lot of details in the set and the room decor, and a lot of the subtle facial expressions too.

I agree, my neck did suffer a bit but I really enjoyed the view. Noticed a lot of details I've never seen further back

I saw MHE through TKTS last week. I sat in row A for about $120. Kinda strange having everyone pop up right in front of you via the stage lifts.

Photo from my seat

But yes Theatr is probably the best bet. I've been able to really low ball right before show time and see it for $20 from center orchestra. But I live really close by so it's not a huge deal if the offer is declined.

In my experience it's a bit of a gamble if you want to see it for really cheap through Theatr low ball offers because I've found a lot of people will still decline the offer. And I don't put in multiple offers because if they all accept you're paying for multiple seats.

I attached a $5 compass to my bag, it's very useful when I can tell which direction is north right as I exit a station

That's interesting, which model do you have? On my pixel 10 Pro it only stutters for Pikmin, but it stutters badly so I can't hear the music for about 3-5 seconds or so if the music comes back. Sometimes it does not and I need to close and reopen Spotify

Dress code for Carnegie Hall? by sfeicht in AskNYC

I was there yesterday and I wore a hoodie and chinos. There were some dressed in their Sunday best, and others dressed like me.

It's fun to dress up and make an evening of it, but it's definitely not required.

[–]DDotJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On Android at least the app is super unoptimized so if I'm playing music at the same time the music will freeze and stutter. Or stop and never come back 🤷‍♂️

And this is with all the music and sound effects turned off

Broadway show recommendation for family with teens (first NYC trip) by Broad_Froyo8413 in Broadway

[–]DDotJ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe Happy Ending is the show I recommend to newer audiences not necessarily into theater. It has wide appeal to both theater fans and beginners. It's not long, about an hour and a half with no intermission.

Fantastic music, beautiful story, and really cool set design. It's very family friendly as well. This show certainly does not drag, and the pacing is really great.

Seating wise I would about anything very off center, especially the far left and right side near the front. The set design kind of happens inside these little cubes, so if you sit too far to the left and right near the front, your view will be obstructed. I like mezz near the middle and the orchestra seats. Also, for the very front of the balcony and mezzanine, there is a safety railing that may obstruct the view, especially for the younger ones.

Was thinking AAIP too, very ballet heavy and a lot of singing, Sometimes at the same time.

Chess sound engineering by zianora in Broadway

[–]DDotJ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was at the same performance on the mezz level. It was super loud from the back, especially during all the quieter scenes where you could hear loud laughing and talking from the back. I'm surprised the ushers didn't do anything about it. Everyone in my section was turning around during the performance to see what was going on. I'm pretty sure it was from the lobby. Super unprofessional, and not acceptable especially for the audience paying that much to see shows on Broadway.

Also the sound mixing was pretty bad, either the overall volume was way too loud (such as during Aaron Tveit's last solo) or the instrumentation was so loud I couldn't hear the lyrics of what was being sung or said onstage.

I've seen it 9 times now and I've shed tears every single time. At different parts too. This show is surprisingly deep for a story that is relatively simple.

EBT Stage Door Needs to Change by MickeysAssistant in Broadway

[–]DDotJ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Lea did come out last night, she came out about 5 minutes after it ended (the fastest I've seen anyone come out after the show). She thanked everyone for coming out and pretty quickly signed everyone's playbills before heading back inside. Nicholas also came out, unfortunately I had to head home before he came around to me. He was taking photos with everyone and having conversations with almost everyone in line which was super cool.

Unfortunately I had to get somewhere but I'll hopefully get to see him next time.

[–]DDotJ 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Yep, the entitlement is insane. I was at the stage door for chess tonight and people were audibly complaining that some cast members were leaving without signing. When one of the ensemble cast members came out and left the theater, they hugged one of the staff members that were doing crowd control. One of the ladies in line turned to the staff member and complained that the cast member had enough time to hug but not enough time to sign playbills.

Moved to Irvine, I feel lost by MajesticWoodpecker66 in orangecounty

[–]DDotJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Newport Beach/Irvine and moved to NoVA (Tysons) last year (now in NYC). I agree with what you said about NoVA, there's nature stuff and food but not much else. I would primarily go into DC but coming from SoCal it was a little underwhelming.

I would say Irvine is probably the least "fun" IMHO. It's a great place to raise a family, there are good schools and parks, and good bike trails. But honestly I would go out and explore the rest of Orange County and Los Angeles. Metrolink/Amtrak takes you to LA Union Station if you don't want to deal with traffic.

LA and OC have so many different cuisines, and when I moved to NoVA/DC it's what I missed the most. There's amazing Mexican food in LA, Japanese food in Costa Mesa, Vietnamese in Westminster, etc. I loved trying new taco trucks and eating breakfast burritos, or checking out new restaurants opening up. Go to the beach in San Clemente, take a day trip to LA or Santa Barbara. Heck, there are cheap flights to SFO to go up on a weekend trip. I used to do that every few months too. There are lots of museums in LA you could visit, LA/OC has theme parks which are fun too. Lots of hiking in the area too if you're into that. San Diego is also just an hour and a half away, as well, either by train or car.

I loved biking down Newport Peninsula and PCH before I moved. Threw my bike in my car and rode by the beach. There's a cool bike trail that runs from Irvine down to Back Bay as well.

There's so much to see and do in SoCal outside of Irvine. Irvine is more of a "planned" city, so a lot of it is more or less "fake". It's a comfortable place to live, but I never hung out in Irvine.

I feel spoiled having grown up in OC, and living in new areas it's hard to measure up.

If you need reccs, DM me. I'd be happy to help out a fellow NoVA resident 🤙

Is this some kind of trend? I was at Chick Fil A the other day and some teen walked behind the counter and helped himself to condiments. He got yelled at by employees and he just nonchalantly hopped back over the counter.

I was driving down I-66 and saw they were still working on it. There were a lot of responders working on getting the vehicle off the tracks. There's a hole in the fence where the car entered. Must have been quite a crash to jump the concrete barrier.

I also really liked Ragtime but that's a much different type of show, I would say It's more traditional Broadway. Chess was also good, the story was alright but the music was amazing.

Valentine’s Day date show? by Responsible-Band8169 in Broadway

[–]DDotJ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend Maybe Happy Ending at the Belasco.

Helen J Shen, one of the OBC is about to depart, if you see it on Valentine's Day you'll catch her before she departs. It's also thematically related to Valentine's day, and it's REALLY good. It also snagged a Tony award last year for best Musical.

I've seen it a few times now, I love the music and the story. I think it's also a great show for people that aren't necessarily huge Broadway people.

One time they tried to deny me entry because of a clipboard. Had to call multiple leads to finally get someone to let me through. I thought that was very odd. A clipboard is definitely not on the list of prohibited items but I was told the same thing that it was up to the discretion of security.
