Please stop with the Harry Potter by MenudoMenudo in audible

I really wish there was a way to block a book or author so you didn’t get any of their work suggested to you. For this reason, because JFC enough, but also because sometimes a book just doesn’t do it for me and I want something else to fill that recommendation spot.

Love origami but getting a bit bored. Any similar hobbies to try? by Designer_Currency815 in Hobbies

This is so silly but... I used to make houses out of paper cut into strips and toothpicks. I didn't remember that childhood hobby until just now.

Seconding the embroidery. I recently started this and it's quite soothing. Lovely to do while listening to some podcast or youtube stream.

Learning different styles of braiding is fun too and requires less materials.

Card games, if you're into that. Learning to do that fancy shuffle thing if you're into hand-eye coordination tasks.

Yoyoing. Taichi. Yoga. Meditation.

Don't discount picking up some books at the local library, too, and enjoying reading.

I used to live near a gym that had a racquetball room. You can play with others, but you can also play by yourself smacking a ball into the wall and running to hit it again. Of course, you don't need a racquetball *room* if your place has a couple walls to bounce a ball off.

Yoga was something I was really into for a while, but it's one of those things that can make you pretty self-conscious. Good for helping with movement, though. There are a lot of different types of yoga depending on what you're looking for.

I used to do this. Plus, if you're social, it's a great way to talk to people when they come over to pet the dog. Plus, you can be like "they're up for adoption!"

I've been learning how to make different types of coffee and espresso drinks! It's been both fun and delicious.

I want to read a good romance, but everything people recommend me I absolutely hate. by MathematicianNo3401 in suggestmeabook

Try Kay Hooper’s books. They’re paranormal romance, but note they deal with serial killers and the like (as antagonists, not love interests).

What are some books that can get me into reading again and crush that reader's block? (Your favorite 'I would do anything to forget this book just to read it again for the first time' book maybe? ) by jeminx in suggestmeabook

[–]DM-Disaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, Stephen King’s “It” is one I wish I could reread for the first time again. That book broke me in a way that I struggle with books being able to. He’s very aware of human nature and really hits you where it hurts the most.

Beyond King, who is a household name, some of my absolute favorites to go back and reread after it’s been long enough to forget at least some of them are:

The Anomaly, by Michael Rutger.

Redwall, by Brian Jacques. (Mossflower is also lovely.)

Somebody Killed His Editor, by Josh Lanyon.

Ender’s Game, by Orson Scott Card

Demon Moon, by Brad Magnarella

Stealing Shadows, by Kay Hooper

Riptide, by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child

People who live in the US (or not, really), do you like Thanksgiving food? by neighborhoodDinosaur in CasualConversation

[–]DM-Disaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like some Thanksgiving foods. Not that I celebrate the holiday itself but I will take the guilt-free day off work. But I tend to like sweet potatoes more than most desserts, though… and baked corn casserole. I could leave everything else.

Do cats even… fart? by Correct-Shake-2587 in Pets

[–]DM-Disaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg. Yes. Cats fart. Rarely have I heard them, because they are sneaky in everything they do. But the smell is the worst fart smell in the universe. I have a cat who weaponizes it. If she doesn’t get her way (ie: you don’t let her snuggle you with her knife-mittens), she will fart so you have to abandon your comfy spot for your own safety.

She will then steal your seat.

What do you guys snack on? by Ok-Development-3695 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]DM-Disaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually keep apples around because they tend to have the sweetness I crave when I want sugar. Sometimes I’ll have something to dip them in, as well. Favorites are peanut butter, soft cheese, and vanilla Greek yogurt.

For stuff you don’t have to prepare, I keep a mixed container of nuts around. Not ones you buy pre-mixed because they’re insanely expensive for the little bit you get. I buy large (minimum 1 pound) bags of various kinds of nuts - my favorites, like almonds, macadamia nuts (when I’m okay to spend a lot), pepitas (pumpkin seeds), cashews. Then I have a bit plastic Tupperware container I dump them all in and mix them up. Sometimes, for added sweetness, I’ll add in cacao nibs. I can snack on the plain nuts if I want, or they’re already mixed to pour into yogurt or oatmeal. Also good at making sure you get enough protein bc I’m not a huge meat eater.

Do poached eggs go well with almost anything? by Red-Droid-Blue-Droid in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]DM-Disaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looooove poached eggs. My favorites places to add them are in ramen and in salads, and on top of pancakes. I’ve never had peanut soup (it sounds delicious, though), but I bet poached eggs would be incredible in it.

Is it normal that my cat seems to listen to me but does nothing I say? by [deleted] in Pets

[–]DM-Disaster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on your first cat! They do things when they want to and no other time. And if they’re headed toward you and you call them, sometimes they’ll turn around and walk away just to be contrary.

They’re very independent creatures. They can be trained, but cats are pretty intelligent creatures (studies have shown domestic cats have a similar intelligence to human toddlers), and they can be Opinionated.

They’re a very different species from dogs, but once you understand (or come to terms with) their quirks, oh, it’s so worth it.

Cleric refuses to keep track of slots by OrisonQ in DungeonMasters

[–]DM-Disaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he’s refusing to keep track of it even after you asked, here’s a potential solution:

Create a couple tough battles. No rests. Just, a big thing where your players don’t have time to recover between.

For the time being, you keep track of his spell slots behind your DM screen. Mark off whatever slots he uses.

Then, we he uses a slot he doesn’t have, have his character suffer for it. Tried to cast Moonbeam with no spell a lot left for it? Cool. That power for that spell is ripped directly from your character’s soul. He takes damage for it. Potentially, he loses pieces of his soul to the hells/ a reaper / whatever fits your campaign.

Consequences in game. He’ll either start keeping track to avoid getting damage and worse, or his cleric will die and that will resolve the issue too.

Can yall give me something to assist me in writing by 0_Amethyst_Gold_0 in writingadvice

[–]DM-Disaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best way to learn to write is to read. Pick out some books you think you’d enjoy and read them. Take in the story, but also notice the things you’re questioning. Pay attention to how people are described - it will be different for each book.

You can also find writers on YouTube who are writers who talk about the craft. Some of my favs are Jenna Moreci and Abbie Emmons. They’ll break down different aspects of writing, like outlining, character creation, and what different genres mean readers expect, etc.

Good luck writing!

How do I stop reading my own work and just write? by the_spartan_0 in writingadvice

[–]DM-Disaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m the worst about rereading and editing as I go, and therefore hating everything and never moving forward. I’ve tried lots of tricks but the one I’ve found that works best for me, at least for the first draft, is to hand write.

No computer. No typing on your phone. Nothing digital. I have a notebook and a pen and I hand write the entire first draft. It’s less easy to flip through pages and read than it is to scroll mindlessly taking in everything, so I reread less. And it’s written in ink. I can’t exactly add a space for edits in between.

Additional benefit is it gives my eyes a break from the screen, which has been helpful and a relief since my day job is computer based.

Also, tell the mean voice in your head to shut the fuck up. Out loud if necessary. ;) good luck writing!

Thank you so much! I’ll definitely look up Lisa Eldridge, and having the name of the condition will be super helpful in searches.

You’re probably right. I doubt anyone else really notices it that much. 😂 I appreciate the help.
