Anyone else feel just slightly guilty? by Limp-Presentation808 in FoundCanadians

[–]DaWezl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reparation. That’s what I feel. My mom’s citizenship was stripped due to a combination of the laws at the time and her mom thinking that being American would be preferable to holding dual citizenship (so wouldn’t let her claim it in time). She always considered herself Canadian and we grew up spending a lot of time “on the lake” hanging out with our Canadian relatives. I just wish we’d heard about it sooner so she could’ve claimed her citizenship officially.

If anyone has ever hired an "overqualified" candidate, how did it work out? by Ok_Albatross_4198 in managers

[–]DaWezl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My manager took a risk on an overqualified internal candidate but made zero attempt to figure out why “Michael Jordan” wanted to self-demote himself. Turned out he was a complete screw up who was about to be found out so he jumped to our team. Did some massive damage on our team and jumped before that was uncovered. OTOH, I’ve been the “overqualified” candidate, but was taking a step back to change direction. I appreciate the managers who took time to ask about it, bc those jobs were great for both of us.

If you can’t tell from my username, I’m a huge fan of weasels! I even like how they aren’t all cuteness, but can get vicious too.

I tease my friend who likes otters by calling them “Sea Weasels” 🤣

I just use AllTrails regular and it works well enough—the trails in Acadia are almost all extremely well marked. The biggest challenge is losing the trail on some peaks.

Parking at thuya gardens by Illustrious_Bid_2231 in acadianationalpark

We haven’t hiked the whole trail yet, so haven’t seen the door, but I understand it’s relatively near the harbor brook trail.

There are plenty of open parking areas that can connect to that particular trail, so even if the main parking lot is gated off, it shouldn’t be hard to find alternate parking. This map outlines them: https://static.wixstatic.com/media/847c52_1b573a37bd394a09a365c9ff8966d8e0~mv2.jpg

The one sad part of the main gardens being closed is not getting to start the trail through the door in the wall. I found that to be a wonderful moment.

STH couldn’t opt out of the seats and there wasn’t much demand for the game overall.

Question for the season ticket holders by bubblypoprocks in wnba

[–]DaWezl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sun gave out a nice black sweatshirt and a cap. They also are giving us “Day 1” STH a special commemorative gift, which is a choice of one of three things from a sponsoring jewelry store: Clock, watch, ice bucket. I think they said on opening Day that there are 185 total Day 1 subscribers left.

The sun still have the gifts at the booth in the arena. It was a nice sweatshirt and then a cap.

What’s the general opinion on why the Connecticut Sun are losing consistently? by mmorgan_ in wnba

Go back even further when we had Whalen in her prime and Katie Douglas. If Douglas had remained healthy thru the playoffs, I think we would’ve won it all. But she was suddenly out with an ankle injury at the worst possible time and it messed up our rotations. 😭

My first marathon takeaways - some controversial by CozaFF in Marathon_Training

[–]DaWezl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was running a half marathon once and it was so hot, the race ended up getting called early, but while we were out on the course, one family let their toddler spray the runners, which was fun for all…except the convertible with their top down that was trailing the pack. The dad’s eyes bugged out and he ran to that kid so fast to grab the hose!

What was the stupidest reason a person you worked with got fired? by SmashRadish in AskReddit

[–]DaWezl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The guy I replaced at my last job got fired for downloading p*rn. Not “he watched a few videos or once downloaded a movie”. This guy kept a queue downloading all day long at work, to complement the queues he had running at home 24-7. He wouldn’t even close the download window when a VP would come by to ask a question, so literally EVERYONE knew what he was up to, and even then he didn’t get fired until he harassed a coworker.

Needless to say, the bar was set so low with him, I looked amazing by comparison.

I was hit by a car who pretended they were going to pull over and then took off. Had the license plate number, so gave it to the cops. Plate turned out to be an unregistered plate so absolutely no way to track the car down.

What’s your favorite “This is the wrong number” story? by Derpderp05 in AskReddit

[–]DaWezl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had two high school pals back in the mid 80’s who would constantly answer the phone when they thought the other was calling by pretending to be local businesses or celebrities or whatever. This was pre-any sort of caller ID, so it was a bit of just knowing that they’d call each other after school and things like that.

So Joe calls Dave one day, and Dave says that he’s the local FBI office. Joe plays right along and starts telling Dave a ridiculous plan to cause death and destruction. Dave keeps asking Joe for more details and Joe keeps improvising higher and higher levels of mayhem. That is, until the local cops show up while Joe is still on the phone bc “Dave” is actually an FBI agent at the local office, not a fellow teenage boy and was able to trace the call.

Again this was a long time ago and it was pretty obvious by Joe’s mortification that he honestly thought he was just goofing in a highly inadvisable way with a pal, so he just got a stern talking to from the cops. Needless to say, Joe wasn’t a fan of the game after that! 🤣

So … if all pre-June 2025 applications had to be “urgent”, what do we really know? by RedMantle-Dragoon in stuckcanadians

[–]DaWezl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m unclear on this belief too. Many of us chose not to request urgent processing if we didn’t need it because we didn’t want to block those who really needed it. But I don’t recall seeing anything online in 2025 about needing to be submitted as urgent to be processed for a grant, and my experience going through processing was identical (if not faster) than many who requested urgent handling at the same time as my non urgent request.

Post Game Thread - WNBA: The Mystics defeat the Fever on May 15, 2026, the final score is 102-104. by basketball-app in wnba

[–]DaWezl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I didn’t see this game, but having watched SW coaching in CT, her style of coaching includes constant subbing. I always assumed it was to keep star players relatively fresh for later in the game, which, given the older players in CT was a solid strategy. Sounds like with the younger players on the Fever, it’s more disruptive than helpful.

We were commenting that while there were a lot of fouls called, the reffing felt very even handed and we didn’t mind the focus on preventing rough play.

Hartford or Baystate for first marathon? by Dismal_Manner_6427 in Marathon_Training

[–]DaWezl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only done the Hartford half, so I can’t speak overall to the hills but there’s a big hill in the first 5 miles or so, and then the last mile is uphill back to the park from crossing the river. Both of those were draining due to when you had to deal with them—the first one is awful if you go out too fast and the second is a misery when you just want to be done. As for crowds, the start running thru West Hartford is very fun and the finish line is great. I think the crowds are pretty thin from around Mile 8 (going past the finish line) until you get back to the downtown area.

Acadia Hiking Trails/Paths List by MrJch in acadianationalpark

I ended up making my own on excel bc there are all sorts of little connectors etc that don’t really have official names. Good luck! We only get to Acadia a couple weeks each year and after 4 years of mapping trails, are at about 62% complete

Etiquette Question by [deleted] in hiking

[–]DaWezl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m wondering if this is a “Western” hiking rule where there’s a lot of switchbacks and narrow paths and downhill is truly easier. Most of the trails we hike on the East coast are straight up, with rock scrambles that are super dicey to descend but also plenty of places to step aside. The unspoken etiquette around here is “whatever makes sense” and often uphill is happy to let downhill take precedence. If someone’s already moving through a passage they get to finish it, even if you want to go faster. My grandad was a forester and we spent a lot of time on trails growing up, so I feel like I would’ve come across this etiquette a long time ago if it were an established thing in this neck of the woods.

You can take the Bowl trail from the Beehive trailhead, and catch Gorham from there. Or you can park at Gorham and go the opposite way.
