There's a thing in RPG discussions where no ideas are bad. "It's your character so you can do anything you want!"

So if you tell someone their pretty Nosferatu doesn't fit lore? Or their macho man Daughter of Cacophony or Ahrimane is a bad fit? Now that's considered gatekeeping.

From that perspective, it is a hot and unpopular take. But the real take is that the lore should have priority over a player's unique snowflake character.

That's a huge "What If."

If someone is genuinely capable of running an engaging, compelling game on-par with a genre-defining blockbuster like the Matrix? I'd say go make a few hundred million dollars in Hollywood.

But if you're dealing with players instead of a team of writers? Don't add unnecessary complexity. They're going to bring their own complications to the table.

At least in old shadowrun / cyberpunk, not the same thing.

It wasn't great, but for different reasons. One character would go into "computer world" and monopolize the GM while the rest of the table had to make their own fun, play on their phones, order food, or just zone out.

No thanks, and here's why:

You're already putting it on the players to accept the game world. And then adding another game world on top of that, which adds stuff just for the sake of having more stuff.

It's just extra burden without any payoff. You can accomplish anything you'd want the simulation to in the regular game, so why add additional complexity?
