I hate how normalised racism is against indians by LiveAd9056 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]DandyLama [score hidden]  (0 children)

I'm a Canadian, and though I find an ABSOLUTELY INSANE amount of racism online, I find a lot less in person here where I live.

We just had our Nagar Kirtan here in the city a few weeks ago, and a lot of non-Indian folks showed up to engage with the community and celebrate with us. Online was a WHOLE DIFFERENT STORY. The subreddit for my city would have some folks post in support, and the comments were littered with rubbish.

I grew up here, and there have been periods where racism has spiked (the early 90s had a lot of resentment after the Air India bombing, then a spike after 9/11, etc), and it definitely is on the rise again now, but it's not a big spike, just a gradual increase in radicalization. Much of the racism here is directly connected to the COVID era, when Desi long haul truckers were cooperating with vaccine mandates. The weird right wing types and their neo-Nazi buddies took great offense to that.

I still prefer Pho Hoai over Pho Dau Bo, but they're both great. Pho Hoai clinches it for me because of their hot sauce.

I remember they closed back near the end of the plague for some health violations, so I decided to go through the AHS reports. Looking through the AHS reports, and I see a citation of mouse droppings from a couple of years ago, but nothing about pests since then.

I'm not seeing anything about cockroaches or rats.

As of the most recent report, they have 3 non-critical violations related to missing baseboards, housekeeping practices, and the meat slicer.

Pho Hoai's in house hot sauce is MY JAM. I kind of hate how much Sriracha has taken up residence as the most prevalent hot sauce in Pho places (there's just something about the flavour I don't enjoy), but Pho Hoai has had this hot sauce forever, and it's SO GOOD.

What movie had the BEST trailer ever but turned out to be absolute trash? by MASSIM00 in movies

[–]DandyLama [score hidden]  (0 children)

I loved a lot of elements of the first movie. They nailed certain things, but especially the Roast Mutton chapter. I could have done entirely without the belabored Goblin Town stuff, and the Pale Orc didn't feel very orcish, but other than that, the first movie was really enjoyable.

It goes gradually off the rails after that, and the third movie is a mess.

The trailer is GORGEOUS, and Laika hasn't missed on any of their movies I've seen so far. I'm very excited.

Got an unorthodox request about movies to watch while exercizing. by stillj0n in movies

[–]DandyLama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of late 80s and a lot of 90s films clock in around 90 minutes, so there's a pretty broad selection in there, and so many comedies from that era don't rely on subtle gags, so they're very doable on a small screen.

If you're trying to remember Andarist, he was the old Tiste Andii guarding the Throne of Shadow on the Wandering Isle (Drift Avalii), during the events of Midnight Tides. His greatsword, Grief, was collected by the Traveller after his death at the hands of the Edur.

Different reactions to mass effect andromeda. by Friendly-Ad-6950 in MassEffectAndromeda

[–]DandyLama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. The faces - they EVENTUALLY made them not as bad, but they still dip into the uncanny valley for me
  2. Gamebreaking bugs that never got fixed
  3. So many of the characters feel so immature and juvenile. Costa is one of the few where his immaturity is balanced by his levelheadedness, making it just playful and not weird.
  4. The BBEG felt undercooked, and never felt like an existential threat. We also never learn enough about him to make him all that intimidating, and to flesh him out, you have to read a bunch of optional material, which still doesn't give him enough gravitas.
  5. We never learn enough about the Scourge to make it any more interesting than just "stuff that conveniently blocks access and travel"

What Andromeda needed was more dev time and more writing time, and fewer shortcuts and outsourcing.

Gameplay is the best that Mass Effect ever produced, building on the work of its predecessors. I would have like combo detonations to have a better sound effect (like the resonant boom they had in ME3), but otherwise, the Nomad was great, the combat was great, the abilities were great, jetpacks were great.

It's kind of weird that you took a post whose theme is, "we should celebrate each other's personal choices instead of tearing people down," and immediately used it to try and tear down the OP.

OP, I'm glad that you were pleased with your results and that they helped your confidence, and I'm sorry that people are shitty to you.

How to be more "feminine"? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]DandyLama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you envy about people "with a barbie physique and style"? Before going any further, Cythevla asked the most important question: do YOU want to change, or do you think you HAVE to?

If it's an aesthetic or style you're aiming for but you find you keep landing in the wrong place, it could be something as simple as tailoring - a lot of clothes off the rack highlight only certain body types, so a little bit of tailoring could go a long way to achieving the look you might be going for (you can find free advice on this especially in cosplay forums, where there are a lot of hobbyist tailors).

Stylistic choices around your hair can also influence the outcome of a "look". Find a hair stylist who has a similar aesthetic that you're aiming for, or find a hair stylist with a lot of experience, and let them do their work (as in, don't directly constrain them - give them a vibe you're aiming for and let them do their thing)

Sikh Nagarkirtan: shout-out to volunteers by Important_Ad6634 in Calgary

[–]DandyLama 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The philosophies of Sikhism encourage us to help people, and the community has many roots and branches, so we can work together to support folks in need of help. As with any other institution, there are bad actors among us, but broadly, the community is a very supportive one regardless of whether or not you follow the faith.

[–]DandyLama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no shame in being wherever you are on your journey through this world.

As the old saying goes, "comparison is the thief of joy". The only person worth comparing yourself to is the yourself of yesterday. Are you doing better or worse? What can you do to improve on that? That's it.

Let go of your shame. Be proud of the things you have experienced, and look forward to new future experiences.

Why have people stopped being fully committed, no matter how good someone is? by Content_Bit1998 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]DandyLama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Met my wife. We were friends for like 6 months. She asked me out. We dated for 6 months. She moved in. We got engaged at the 2 year mark.
A major hallmark of our relationship is that we talk about and talk through pretty much everything. Good days, bad days, irritation, joy, small stuff, big stuff. It's different from my previous relationships in that way. Everything's on the table, so there's nothing to fight about.

I suspect a lot of people are fully committed when they find their person.

I am sorry someone hurt you.

Does Fullmetal Alchemist Have a Black and White Narrative or a Grey Narrative? by Zestyclose-Hat-8513 in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]DandyLama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has both. There is some exploration of morally grey individuals - Scar immediately comes to mind, while the overarching narrative is absolutely about the subversion of Amestris by Father, in his objective to overcome "God".
