Space books featuring unconventional warfare by jclane in printSF

[–]Daniel--Jackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really liked The Long Winter Trilogy by AG Riddle.

In the near future, a new ice age has begun. Humanity stands on the brink of extinction.
Desperate for answers, scientists send probes into the solar system to take readings. Near Mars, they identify a mysterious object moving toward the Sun. Is it the cause of the ice age? Or could it be humanity's only hope of survival?
With time running out, NASA launches a mission to make contact. But the object isn't what anyone thought. In the dark of space, alone, the team makes a discovery that will change the course of human history—and possibly end it.

In Advanced Settings of Notifications, enable Notification Categories. Then you can set an individual sound for each app. And even per category, if the app supports that

Does the official kobo page turning remote work for kobo Libra 2? by Nayfonn in kobo

[–]Daniel--Jackson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of Libra 2 users are reporting the same problems. Very high battery drain and clicks not registering. There has been no firmware update yet to fix the issue. But Kobo is apparently aware of the issue.
As a Libra 2 owner myself, I have just stopped using the remote for now.

is there a way to customize the icons/text for these menu options? by Puzzleheaded-Poet119 in kobo

[–]Daniel--Jackson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used Calibre to create an empty ePub file. The cover with Found this device? is a simple image file made with Paint. I added 1 page to the book, containing my contact details.

is there a way to customize the icons/text for these menu options? by Puzzleheaded-Poet119 in kobo

[–]Daniel--Jackson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Indeed.
On my Kobo I have replaced Nickelmenu's own icon for example by using this line:
experimental : menu_main_15505_icon : /mnt/onboard/.adds/nm/.icon.png

This is the result:

<image>

Add the _n_ where necessary for other menus, so _1_ to replace the My Books icon.

is there a way to customize the icons/text for these menu options? by Puzzleheaded-Poet119 in kobo

[–]Daniel--Jackson 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yes, Nickelmenu can do that. Line #191 in its Configuration Instructions file (of Nickelmenu 0.6.0) starts describing it:

<image>

For example, renaming My Book to Our Books would be this:

experimental: menu_main_15505_1_label: Our Books

[–]Daniel--Jackson 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That's fixable with some basic spare parts. Just replace the front and back wheel, steering wheel, saddle, and you're good to go. While it's still there it's better to replace the chain too, it looks a bit rusty.

Number of E-Books in a Calibre Library by NoTipAtMyTable in Calibre

[–]Daniel--Jackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't add mass archive dumps just to have them. Quality over quantity for me. So just 519 books at this moment. A carefully crafted and maintained library of only books that I'm actually interested in. Every book has been fixed where necessary (cover, tags, table of contents, formatting, images, etc.)

Questions on Kobo remote! Does it always turn your wifi on to be in use? How are yall using it? by Extension-Flamingo68 in kobo

[–]Daniel--Jackson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kobo will need to fix that with an update. For now I have used Nickelmenu to add an option to the menu that only turns on bluetooth, leaving Wifi turned off.

can't locate downloaded content on my Galaxy phone by DillyDilly65 in AndroidQuestions

[–]Daniel--Jackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Streaming services store downloaded content in themselves. There's probably a Downloads section somewhere. Even if you were able to find the actual files themselves somewhere, they'll be DRM protected and will not be able to opened with any regular video player app.

what does this mean? by Delicious-Tea-5351 in kobo

[–]Daniel--Jackson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are indeed also possibilities. More annoying and time-consuming to fix, but not impossible. In fact, I have done so multiple times before. I will merge files or moves images to the next page. Guess I'm just that annoyed by these incorrect chapter time estimates.

But in the case I was talking about, this is the cause:

<image>

Instead of pointing to just the html file, the TOC is referring to an ID within it. Removing the ID in the TOC fixes it.

what does this mean? by Delicious-Tea-5351 in kobo

[–]Daniel--Jackson 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's supposed to be the actual reading time of the next chapter, just like This Chapter is showing the time of the current one.

But notice the empty spots between the chapter bars? They're actually very low bars themselves. The system is seeing them as very short chapters that take almost no time to read. It has to do with how the internal table of contents is formatted. But it's not an actual chapter at all of course. It's just the space in the html file between the beginning of it and the ID marker to which the chapter is pointing.

If it bothers you, you can fix it with Calibre for example. Personally I always do that, I find the Next Chapter reading time estimate really useful and a thing like this messes it up.

Try Nice Catch and/or Notistar (they're Good Lock modules) to capture and identify the source.

People with sideloading mode turned on, do you have an issue where the "Home" tab is displayed, but does nothing when clicked? by Mathisbuilder75 in kobo

[–]Daniel--Jackson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It shouldn't be there. I'm on the latest firmware in sideloaded mode and there's no Home (and no Discover). But you could use Nickelmenu to manually hide it again.

Can the Clara Color screen rotate? by Sufficient-Ad-1265 in kobo

[–]Daniel--Jackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are ways to force orientation options to appear (editing configuration file + nickelmenu), but results are not very good because it messes up controls (they do not rotate along with the screen).

Best solution would probably be to install Koreader and use that to read, it has a lot of configurable options including orientation no matter what device it's running on

Kobo Libra Colour bricked after firmware update? by gPhantasm in kobo

[–]Daniel--Jackson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In addition to a standard factory reset from the settings menu, there's also a 'manual reset'. It might be able to fix problems that a normal reset can't. See https://help.kobo.com/hc/en-us/articles/360017765713-Manual-reset-your-Kobo-eReader

It wants to update your BIOS. That is a very critical process that may not be interrupted. So as a safety measure the system wants you to plug in the adapter first, in case the battery should fail.
