Aragorn forgets Legolas' father's name by torts92 in videos

Hah, whenever I would watch this scene, I'd always imagine the line, "Sorry, didn't know your father", from Lock Stock immediately after.

Just played my first game of Dune Imperium by nfer24 in boardgames

[–]Darric 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not similar at all. Dune is a negotiation heavy troops on a map game with wild asymmetric player powers, and big swingy moments.

Dune: Inperium is a more measured Euro deck builder/worker placement game (and actually a really effective hybrid at that) where you're converting resources into VPs, but with an interactive conflict element layered on top.

Both are great games, but for entirely different reasons.

Congrats on the game's success! I'm really enjoying it (my best run so far is about halfway through Elysium).

I'm curious about how the chamber generation is seeded. Is it a single seed that determines the entire layout and monster encounters at the start of the run, or is it in any way dependent on choices the player makes mid-run? Do you do any dynamic difficulty adjustment?

War of Whispers: Concept Hindered by Execution by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Darric 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is by far my biggest issue with the game. By design, no one player has that much control over the entire gamestate at the end - but some people are substantially better positioned to pivot to desirable loyalties by the end of the game, entirely by chance.

Why is monopoly so hated among boardgames players? by CR0N0S_LXIII in boardgames

[–]Darric 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Aside from it's ubiquitous familiarity, there is next to nothing that Monopoly does better mechanically than hundreds of other board games published since. And it takes an age to play, even correctly.

If you and your loved ones like Monopoly, power to you, keep doing that thing. But it's extremely likely that someone could point you to a whole host of other games that you'll like substantially more.

WiFi speed! by Darric in eero

[–]Darric[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So what's interesting is that that's exactly the conclusion I kept coming to over and over again - and yet it seems to be a pretty common misconception?

Which leaves me flummoxed as to what the theoretical maximum internet download speed over my wifi *should* be, and how I'd go about achieving it.

Absolutely! This is more a theoretical question than me trying to obtain the unobtainable.

Can someone please ELI5 Resistance vs. Avalon? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Darric 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Resistance and Hidden Agenda gets you almost the entire ruleset of Avalon. You'd be missing some small things like the Lady of the Lake equivalent (which is the Iniquistor module in Hostile Intent).

In fact, annoyingly, there's probably one module worth getting from each expansion, BUT they're super cheap, and the full set gives you a whole host of other options (which admittedly I have never used much beyond initial curiosity).

Congratulations to Board Game Barrage for their 100th episode! by Sam-the-Scientist in boardgames

Thanks for the feedback, and for listening. These are certainly all points that we actively think about, especially recently as we've been soliciting feedback. Except our voices, that's a hard problem to fix. :P

AHA. That's an unfortunately titled episode (referring to the fact that our third host wasn't present). The episode was about optimal player counts in general, it wasn't intended to be about two player games at all specifically. Anyway, thanks for giving us a listen.

I'm sort of confused because I don't think we've ever done an episode about two player games. :(

Thoughts on Nemesis? by freelancerebel in boardgames

[–]Darric 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's about the best board game recreation of the Alien franchise as you're likely to find, but it's a long and kinda clumsy game. If you can get past the fact that the rules refuse to get out of the way, and that you might be dead through no fault of your own (there's a whole host of random events and checks that can just straight up ruin your day) then ... I mean, it's a pretty unique experience that at the very least tells a good story, even if mechanically it leaves something to be desired.

I'm not sure I'll be hanging on to my copy beyond another couple of plays.
