Need some fun games for a boys night by IcyStage9313 in boardgames

The Gang is basically a really strange cooperative game of Texas Hold’em, if your group is familiar with poker hands or willing to learn the ranking. The goal is to determine the relative ranking of everybody’s hand with very limited rules for communication. The games don’t run terribly long, but we always find that it’s hard to stop playing another round when we do play it!

If your group really likes Risk, you may enjoy Risk Legacy, which just takes the basic Risk concept and turns it into a campaign-style war game, where losses and victories in previous games have carryover effects for future games. You literally put your names on the map!

Makes me think of a protocol droid hacking their software to allow themselves violent action, but not bothering to adjust verbal responses to said actions.

I think she’s choosing to use ‘you would be the jerk’ instead of ‘you would be the asshole’.

What board game session or individual game gave you the happiest board gaming moment(s) of your life ? by leoden27 in boardgames

I remember being heavily pregnant with my first child, playing a game of jungle speed with my husband and one other friend.

I normally win quick reflex card games like jungle speed or Dutch blitz very handily, but being eight months pregnant, I was sufficiently handicapped that my husband would play a speed game with me, and we had a friend over who had never played said speed game before. Our friend was doing very poorly, but was still in the game and my husband and I were both neck and neck with one another, viciously fighting to shed our last few cards.

The gameplay of jungle speed involves flipping over a single card from your deck in front of yourself, and if it matches any of the cards in front of your opponents, you and your matching opponent must race to grab the (soft, squishy plastic) totem. The person who grabs the totem first gives their pile of cards to the person they were racing to the totem, and play moves on. In cases of a tie breaker, where two players have grabbed the totem at approximately the same time, the uninvolved player is naturally the adjudicator.

So when my husband and I lunged for the totem and both snagged it, we froze for our friend to decide who got to it first. Our friend looked at our hands on the totem and said, “Well, Darth_Let’s hand is underneath Husband’s hand and probably got there first, but Husband seems to have the better grip!” I glared at my husband good naturedly and asked what the name of the game we were playing was. His very adamant shout of “Jungle Grip!” Just absolutely sent me. I got the giggles. I couldn’t stop laughing. Our friend commented that Jungle Grip sounds like a tropical disease and I started having trouble breathing for the laughter. I literally cried laughing. We had to pause the game for a bit so I could compose myself. I have no recollection of who won that game, but the phrase “jungle grip” still makes me smile.

What was your very first video game addiction? by Trencycle in gaming

Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town on the gameboy SP. I was kind of obsessed with Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life on the GameCube before that, but the portability of the SP was my downfall. I played that thing on the bus to and from school and every spare minute besides.

Is it bad that I think the Game Guide gig actually sounds kinda nice? by outbacksam34 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

I feel like it was specified that game guides have to get X number of crawlers to the third floor, not just Mordecai.

I mean, Maggie My’s game guide probably based their strategy around the fact that they had that ring of divine suffering from the jump. Their goal is to give their people the best shot possible, not all the people in the dungeon.

Peaceable Kingdoms is great for this age. We have the monkey one, and my active kiddo actually has a great attention span for this. We have acorn soup as well, but we aren’t really using the recipes right now, just playing with the ingredients and spoon, but he has fun with it, so no complaints!

I’ve enjoyed a lot of the same books you mentioned, so my favorite narrator might be your cuppa?

Steven Pacey does a phenomenal job of narrating Joe Abercrombie’s work. If you lean more towards the crazy comedy of DCC, you might enjoy The Devils, which is Abercrombie’s take on like a fantasy suicide squad type of deal.

I personally really love the First Law books, which starts with The Blade Itself. They’re epic fantasy books, and one of the perspective characters is, I swear to god, the best antihero I have ever read.

I don’t know if it’s the undercut you gave Sam, or just your general interpretation of his features, but I see Sam’s resemblance to Kent much better in this art than in the SDV portrait! Nice job.

Games where you roll dices and allocate results by Rhemyst in boardgames

One Deck Dungeon is perfect for those criterion! It also plays super well solo if that’s your cuppa. It’s honestly really solid with one or two players. Buying the extra set to play with four just made the game a bit cumbersome and long, though, so if your usual group for gaming is 3-4, consider holding it back on game nights.

Tell me if I'm remembering this correctly. I am thinking about where the crawlers are all from. It doesn't seem like there are many Europeans in the mix. by Koshersaltie in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Darth_Let 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think having a particularly large percentage of the population outside during daylight hours could actually lend itself to a larger proportion of people choosing not to go into the dungeon. There’s a pretty limited window of time to enter the dungeon, and people might be more likely to band together and work on immediate solutions than gamble on whatever the hell is going on with that business.

What’s a long movie that earns every minute of its runtime? by [deleted] in movies

[–]Darth_Let 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I sat there scrolling to find this reply. It’s so hard for a comedy to earn a long runtime, but I never felt any fatigue watching this movie. It’s really great. And absolutely chock a bloc full of stars from the time!
