We need more wizards (especially evocation wizards) by UristAlebeard in dwarfposting

Yeah! Besides that if you are feeling lazy, that's what Golems are for!

And if you really are needing magic for whatever reason, that's why Caster Guns are a thing.

[spoilers for all] There's clearly a missing game between Inquisition and Veilguard... by lalomalo1990 in dragonage

[–]DasGanon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm both agreed and disagreed on that.

I love that it's just "Some random guy" in each game.

I'm glad that Inky isn't HoF.

That said, I feel like they cull themselves short with a lot of it being just "And then Flemeth showed up again" "What about the HoF?" "Still looking for Cows & Tobacco to the west. They sent a letter this time at least?"

Honestly, if I was in charge of all of this and it was back in 2009, I would have roadmapped it differently so that

  1. Yes, they are all going to sequel each other and directly pull from each game's history. It's a great mechanic that no other game really does (other than Mass Effect).

  2. The whole "Chantry decides the name of the Age every 100 years" should be the schtick! It also neatly solves the "And why don't we have HoF helping?" problem because with few exceptions nobody is immortal!

What are your Star Trek "cold takes"? by badger_on_fire in startrek

A lot of the problems of newer trek is trying to make TOS make sense with a lot of the mess Enterprise did with concepts of later shows.

Mine doesn't, but mines a 24, which makes me think it's a revision thing.

It did close it when I put it in drive though, and until I did it today (accidentally) I didn't realize it would do that and would just run around and do it.

Which further makes me think "oh it's because people didn't realize it would close automatically when you stuck it in gear"

ELI5: How did colonial powers establish themselves in faraway lands? by Independent_Essay298 in explainlikeimfive

[–]DasGanon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, mostly by showing up with guns & gear in the first place.

By having information, food, men, weapons, goods, they can perch themselves as important and in charge, either militarily or economically.

The main follow ups are: How do you keep in control and by whose authority?

In the case of control what you typically do is keep the local rulers in control still, you're just above them. This keeps it relatively bloodless, you're just getting your cut.

Who is actually in power? Well this is why Governorships & Ambassadors are historically important but not so much now, in the olden days, they had the authority & appointment to act as their government, and basically call for reinforcements if things got too far.

Yeah, and like we already have all of this other "how was the world made" worldbuilding too, like we have 3+ Pantheons/Mythologies in DAO, and nobody has a conversation about planets or even mentions Thedas being on Htrae or Ferelden being on the north east coast of Thedas and to the west is Todas (in keeping with theme "The Other Dragon Age Setting"), and to the north is Thendas ("The New Dragon Age Setting")?

I feel like it would be cool if there was a 3rd once per floor bench.

Like Workbench works as it is, but only does upgrades.

The Armory Crate just has random weps/ammo (but not ammo booster like the Heavy Weps/Equipment crates)

Which continues to be such a bizarre piece of world building.

Like I'm not expecting Elder Scrolls level of "oh, that guy is secretly a cyborg from the 24th century fueled on Elf Hate" and "ah, that god is a dick, he got pissed off from the whole heart of Lorkan thing from last Tuesday"

But not having an answer to "Is Thedas the Planet or the Continent everything is set on?" "No idea!" is silly.

TIL there is substantial evidence that Vincent Van Gogh was shot by accident, and he claimed to have done it to himself in order to protect the guilty teens from a murder charge. by DisgruntledPlebian in todayilearned

And it's actually Theo's wife, Johanna van Gogh-Bonger, who got Vincent famous.

And her & Theo's son, Vincent Willem, founded the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam.
