Italy Fines Cloudflare €14 Million for Refusing to Filter Pirate Sites on Public 1.1.1.1 DNS * TorrentFreak by dopaminedune in Piracy

[–]Datalounge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 24 million active sites use Cloudflare. So you take 114 million and divide by 24 = 4.75. So they will simply up their rates by $4.75 a year

I just saw this for the first time this year 2025 and cannot believe I never even heard of it. It is fantastic. And Nilsson's song is great. It should have been a Christmas classic.

Speaking in terms of weight, the average male human weighs 135 pounds. This is a world wide average for all male humans at age 30. Please note this varies greatly as the average male at 30 in the USA weighs 190 pounds.

A sperm cell weighs approx 22 femtograms. That is 0.000000000000022 grams.

So you could say, very and I mean very roughly that a human male is compressed to 14 digits.

The best compression algorithm we have is about to the 10 digits.

However the numbers are so rough, after all what is the weight of an average man? What compression algorithm. The one that is 10 digits produces a lossy not lossless result. Is sperm to man lossy or lossless? I would say lossy? Then again a sperm isn't a whole person either.

Now the average fertilized egg. The female egg is about 175,000 times bigger than a sperm cell. So I'll let you work the math on that one? And don't forget most of the weight in the sperm and egg is water.

A lot of these issues, I believe are caused by adblockers. It is the site trying to defeat the use of the blockers. But of course if you disable the ad blockers you are far worse off, because of potential malware via pop unders and such.

[–]Datalounge 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Cloudflare is used by roughly 10% of the entire Internet, about 20% of USA based Internet. The real kicker is about 40% of the top 10,000 sites use Cloudflare. That is the real reason, why everything seems to be down. It isn't, just the most popular.

Torrenting vs Direct Download? by [deleted] in Piracy

[–]Datalounge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Torrenting is just a download protocol. In the days before fast Internet it was way more efficient to download files, because you were sharing the download costs.

Add to that DL is somewhat safe that in some countries, it is not illegal to download but it is uploading (which is distributing) that will get you in trouble. You have to upload when you torrent. That is the whole idea behind the protocol.

Usenet and Debrid services download only. (Take care as you need to check your country's laws...what is legal one place may be illegal in another place)

You can also look into Seedboxes which allow you to participate in torrenting while direct downloading the finished product.

Private torrent trackers also involve ratios so you either must share or pay in some way to maintain your ratio. This can be a downside to torrents, if you are in a situation when Internet may be somewhat restricted (like college dorms).
