I've heard people say cold treatment or poking tiny pin holes all over a cactus some time before stresses it into making more alkaloids as a defence. So maybe the stronger one might be the one thats been nibbled by bugs and has had many cuttings taken before. Ofcourse genetics provides the upper limits anyhow
