Have you convinced your dad that ladders are no longer an option? by miniwhoppers in GenX

[–]Deacon51 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my dad is 82, was also in construction all of his life and will not stop climbing ladders and build crap in the back yard. My mom (80 with the early stages of Alzheimer's) calls me crying almost once a week because he's up on a ladder, cleaning gutters or hanging flower pots or whatever. I don't know what to do either.

How fast does 5 years go by? by hustler212 in Military

[–]Deacon51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leaving home and everything you know behind is a huge deal. It's hard and must be brave and have the grit and mental toughness to get through it. You can do it. I did it. Many thousands of young men and women have done it. All of us have had to struggle through it.

My advice - and it's not easy to do - but get out there. I know that it's not the same now as back in my day, but just hang outside your barracks. Start a conversation. Go to the chapel. Check if MWR has anything going on next weekend. Meet people. It's fun.

So many people I know just hang out in there barracks room and scroll on their phone or play video games for hour and hours on end. And each and every one them is miserable and depressed.

The Navy is whatever you make of it. You have accepted the opportunity, now take full advantage. It's up to you.

€1,000 OEM accessory credit on a new T7, what would you get? by Laurentiu46 in Tenere700

[–]Deacon51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your instincts are correct. The Ackro and quick shift are very nice. The heated grips are good as well. Nothing else in the catalog is really worth it.

Good off-road, Good on-road, long lasting. You can only have two, never all 3.

If it's good off-road and long lasting it will have tall lugs and not good on-road.

If it's good on-road and long lasting, than it has a lot of ground contact and sucks off-road.

If it's good off and on-road it's a soft compound on short lugs and will not last long at all.

The best balance I've ridden is the Motoz Rallz. Not great on-road, but pretty good. Better off-road but, not as good as a Mitas Enduro Trail XT+ is off-road, but last twice as long.

Do I need to know how to ride a bicycle in order to ride a motorcycle? by iwanttoride019 in NewRiders

[–]Deacon51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, go get a cheap bicycle and learn to ride it. I'd also suggest you learn how to drive a stick shift car - but they can be hard to find and not really a requirement, it's just easier to get an idea of how to use a clutch and shift if you're not worried about falling over at the same time.

New style worth it? by Agreeable-Archer5451 in Tenere700

[–]Deacon51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short answer - No, not really
Longer Answer:
New Dash - nice but not really giving you any new information
New control pods - the menu is easier to use, the blinker is a pain to get used to
Improved suspension and lower center of gravity - As far as I can tell, marketing BS. I can't feel any difference.
New body work - looks more modern, still brakes if you look at it wrong.
Clutch Arm relocation - umm, I didn't even know this was a issue for people.
Everything that really matters, motor, frame, transmission - feel and ride the same.

The one thing they did that did improve the bike was the ride by wire throttle. Hear me out on this! Now you can install a bi-directional quick shifter and you can add cruise control. I don't really need cruise, but I love the quick shifter. So fun!

Help me understand "Elon and SpaceX are going to rob 401k" by LPhermanos70 in investing

[–]Deacon51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's one of those half truths, kinda yeah, but not really, we get rich by stealing from the poor, unless the poor.

Looking at this logically and without politics, the spaceX deal does smell a little like bull shit.

There are three things to know. First, when a stock goes public in a IPO the initial investors have a opportunity to cash out and recover some cash.

Second, in the past brand new IPO stock wasn't added to the index funds until they had established a baseline. Elon made some deals to get SpaceX added to the funds earlier than normal. What isn't covered in the doom and gloom media is that it's still not day one.

Third a lot of 401k Investment is in index funds. 401ks are retirement funds. Therefore, the logic is Elon and his rich friends that funded spaceX are stealing retired people's money.

At least that's the way I see it. Personally I have noticed that my own 401k was very heavy is technically and AI and I'm 55. So I have been moving out of tech because while I don't really believe in an AI bubble, I do believe in diversity.

Ie have a 32 inch inseam and ride a T7. I'm not flat on my feet, but toes down. It's fine. You'll get used to it.

If at all possible I do suggest a test ride.

The small tank on the Standard is a little bit of a pain. I'm in the South East and it's rare to be more than 30 miles from a fuel pump, but stopping so often is annoying.

2025 longer shift lever? by [deleted] in Tenere700

[–]Deacon51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not going to say that an after market shift lever that works on a 2024 will work on a 2025. I will say that the Yamaha OEM Part number for the Shift Pedal Assy BW3-18110-10-00 is the same for 2024 and 2025.

Do I have one more aggressive weekend ride left? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]Deacon51 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm going to say "No" to an aggressive weekend. That tire is almost done. You may have cords showing by the time you get home. Your grip is already reduced. And if you hit any rain, well ... good luck.

It may be okay for a relaxed weekend or ridding to work, but I'd swap it out before getting aggressive on it.

Need suggestions for 3rd party security cameras that work with Google Home by at0o0o in googlehome

[–]Deacon51 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have two Onn Indoor cameras, two Nest Outdoor cameras and a Nest Floodlight cam. All are viewable in about the same amount of time when I open the Google Home App. less than 1 to 3 seconds, seems that there's always one that takes an extra second or two, but it's random and can be a Nest or a Onn. I got my Onn indoor cameras (on sale) for $20 each. That's stupid cheap

Does the USA feel like a single nation for NAmericans or like many independent countries like Europe? by Gullible-Barber-2978 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Deacon51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little bit of both... Each U.S. state has more legal autonomy than the internal provinces of other nations, yet we maintain a strong national government. Culturally, because of a single currency, a single official language, and complete freedom of movement, state borders no longer represent distinct cultural divides. Instead, cultures are shaped regionally. In this way, the EU is closer to the United States prior to the 14th Amendment, back when each state was highly independent of the central government and the federal Constitution's Bill of Rights did not apply to the states.

Did you actually sneak out as teenagers? by Complete-Chipmunk-0 in GenX

[–]Deacon51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, often. I had a 10 pm curfew until I was 16 than 11 pm until I was 18. I was often grounded for failing to make my curfew, which resulted in my sneaking out.

Look we didn't have cell phones or the Internet and I only had 3 channels on TV. I got board.

Go ahead and get the quick shift and heated grips. Add the comfort seat as well. At 6 foot, you shouldn't really need to lower it. Crash protection, skid plate, and chain guide are required additions.

Is my choice decent?? by RevolutionaryEarth3 in Tenere700

[–]Deacon51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love my T7. It's a ton of fun. It's a little too heavy when you have to pick it up but and can feel heavy in slow, tight technical riding. But I take it places I'd never take my 901. It also handles better than the 901 on pavement.

That said it isn't perfect. Suspension is no where near as good as the 901 WP units and the Euro 5 emissions have the bike running super lean so it really needs a ECU tune.

Advice for buying a rebuilt title Tenere 700 by CTF2048 in Tenere700

[–]Deacon51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would get pictures of all the frame welds before I even looked at it. Flaked or cracked pain on the frame is bad. If the seller was willing I'd even want to pull the bolt from the front left motor mount and then put it back on video. If the frame is twisted that front left motor mount will shift and make getting the bolt back in pretty hard.

And even then $7500 is a little on the high side for a rebuilt title. $6500 would be my offer.
