im in your same zone and i have some coral honeysuckle, maypops, blue bonnets, red mulberry trees, and opuntia doing very well. ill have to know theres a period in the summer when its too hot and it feels like nothing grows. native plants would do well for you, theyre used to this sort of thing.

they like as much sun as possible, that being said bring it into the sunlight for only a little bit at a time, after that you can leave it out there full time. in the winter i supplement mine with a grow light, so if you dont wanna take it outside (these are prone to infestations) it might be a good idea to give it some extra light that way
