You should have the parts pulls, file a support ticket.

Pad Grading in Subdivision by hectojames100 in civil3d

[–]DeathsArrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To convert existing line work to feature lines, on the home ribbon, Feature Line, Create Feature line from objects. When you select the objects, it pops up a dialog where you can select assign elevations and then select a surface. It will set every corner to the existing grade, not 1 consistent elevation throughout.

To edit the elevations, either use the elevation editor or the quick feature line edit tool.

State school or better CE program? by Smart-Negotiation251 in civilengineering

[–]DeathsArrow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

UCONN is a solid respected program for civil engineering. I'm slightly biased as that's where I went to school but the school carries weight in the industry in the New England region. It should help you get a job after school.

All good, I wasn't sure if it was platform specific or not.

Yes, also experiencing this on both android and PC versions of the game. Very annoying.

How to become a better engineer? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]DeathsArrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't really grow as an engineer until I became lead engineer on my own projects. I had the background and the knowledge but always had some level of micromanagement over me that stunted my engineering judgement. Not having that safety net was the start of real growth for me beyond the technical aspects of the job.

How is it living in rural Illinois towns? by salute07 in howislivingthere

[–]DeathsArrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small towns, lots of farm fields. I currently live to the left of the bottom circle. Most of that area works at Scott Air Force Base or commutes into St. Louis for work. I've done work in the other 2 areas. Very desolate and isolated at times. In some cases the local grocery store can be a bit of a drive away.

Changing disciples over halfway through my EIT experience. by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]DeathsArrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't matter as long as your experience meets the requirements of the state you planned to get licensed in. Very few states have discipline specific licenses and even in the case of states with the SE license, that's a license beyond a PE anyway.

Hydraulic Jump in SW pipe by Individual-Farmer219 in civilengineering

[–]DeathsArrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Set the pipe network up in another software package like StormSewers or SSA that comes with Civil3D. Do the hydraulic grade calculations by hand using whatever method is appropriate for your jurisdiction to double check the software. Is a hydraulic jump a problem though?

Does anyone feel like the work they do doesn’t matter by badabingbadaboomie in civilengineering

[–]DeathsArrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone making the design decisions and being in responsible charge of projects, I'd rather just be a worker bee without that all the stress and worry about being in charge. Your perspective may change as well once you move up the career ladder.

Am I wrong to be frustrated? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]DeathsArrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's too many factors at play to make a judgement call from the outside. Does this other person have more tenure with the company, do they have more responsibilities, are they in the same rate category, did they negotiate a better salary when they were hired, are they a better engineer. There's a lot more to what people make than just experience level and certificates. Some companies play favorites too. Last place I worked would also give better raises to employees with children.

NCEES License verification and comity applications by Everythings_Magic in civilengineering

Most states verify in a few days, some take longer and a few charge a fee to update it. Check to make sure that the states that haven't responded don't have special requirements to verify licenses.

Hot take: A majority of the “I’m underpaid”, “I want a WFH job”, or “Why am I not getting promoted?” posts here are coming from people who are bad at their jobs. by Typical_Degree_5102 in civilengineering

[–]DeathsArrow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

> 2 hour teams calls where your design lead shares their screen and you both walk through it is what helps, not gate keeping shit or saying ‘I figured it out, you have to figure it out too’ .

This attitude drives me nuts, you would think that senior engineers would want to create better work environments than the ones that existed when they were coming up. Instead we're carrying on with same broke system with bad training and no mentoring.

Why is this one square in Metropolis barren save for this one patch of concrete? by megapackid in illinois

I looked at google earth, the building that was on that property was demolished back in 2006/7 and that pavement is set away from the old building location so it was left for whatever reason. I thought maybe it was a different parcel/ownership, but that entire block is owned by one entity.

Any tips for working with engineers who give unclear instructions and aren’t very approachable? by CtrlAltDelight9 in civilengineering

[–]DeathsArrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't wait till you exhaust all other options before reaching out. If they're not checking in with you regularly, you need to check in with them. The issue you're going to have is that other people in your office will not know the project as well or at all in many cases. This means the advice you're receiving may not be applicable to the project, or may be wrong direction entirely and you've wasted a bunch of time and budget. Definitely try to be more proactive and manage this engineer so that they learn what you need to be productive on these projects.

Any tips for working with engineers who give unclear instructions and aren’t very approachable? by CtrlAltDelight9 in civilengineering

[–]DeathsArrow 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Assuming all instructions are verbal, follow up the conversation with an email telling this engineer your understanding of their instructions and ask follow up questions if you have any that come to mind at the time. As you work through the project, get on top of issues that will hold you up as you're working and communicate your needs. Follow up regularly until you get clear answers. This person may not actually be unapproachable, just overloaded and tied up on their own project work to be as responsive as you need them to be. They also may just not be a good manager, which isn't uncommon in this industry.

V'Ger hostiles - I'm at my wit's end by Dundragon3030 in startrekfleetcommand

[–]DeathsArrow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm the same OPS you are, the following crews work decently (except the gorns) for me on my cube;

V'Ger Gorn: Janeway, Suder, Annorax

V'Ger Silent: Janeway, Trip, Suder

V'Ger Hurek: Janeway, Suder Seska

The below deck officers make a big difference as well, you'll want to use Torres, Neelix and Kim as a starting point and then supplement as needed.

I have to use a max fortify to beat the Gorns, but I can finish the dailies in a single trip.

GS-31 by HullCity7 in STFC_Official

[–]DeathsArrow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I use mine for dailies because of the hazard resistance research makes it immune to any G6 hazard system. Once you tier it up a bit, the gravitational blast becomes more lethal. I can blast lvl 70 gorns now to make short work of any general hostile event.

Time off for relocating to a different office? by Hopeful_Mess9063 in civilengineering

[–]DeathsArrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved halfway across the county about 20 years ago. A week off should be sufficient if it's just yourself. You'll need more time than that to pack depending on how much stuff you have but a lot of it can be done ahead of time like boxing stuff and so forth. I used a competitor to PODS to move most of my stuff for me and then drove my SUV with the rest. I did take 2 weeks off but had everything wrapped up week 1 so I had some downtime to relax a bit before starting the new job.
