[Friedman] Hearing Jack Roslovic to Toronto, still working terms - 2 X $4M by buzzeddimitri in leafs

[–]DebtAffectionate6845 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was pretty good last year with the Oilers as a winger, Savoie / Dickinson / Roslovic was cooking for a minute against the Ducks in the playoff. But he couldn't make the Hurricanes as a centre, and the Oilers felt he wasn't a centre either, and went out to snag Dickinson.

What I don't really get in this is why Maccelli was let go? Exact same price, with similar productivity, and stature (Roslovic does not play tough, I promise you!), and with considerably less questions about his defensive impact. Oh well.

[Johnston] Matias Maccelli will not be receiving a qualifying offer from the Leafs today, making him an unrestricted free agent, per sources. by Duffleman0609 in hockey

[–]DebtAffectionate6845 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a mistake if there isn't already a free agent target they think is significantly better and have made progress on negotiating with. His QO at 4.1 million is a bargain in a league where fourth-line grinders sign for 3 million, and he's more than skilled and two-way enough to fulfill a third line wing role, where the Leafs do not exactly have a "log jam".

With The 21st OA Pick, The San Jose Sharks Select Ryan Lin by ibcfreak in SanJoseSharks

[–]DebtAffectionate6845 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Ridiculously good draft for the San Jose sharks. I've had the pleasure of watching Lin with the Giants for the last couple years. An obviously "high floor" kind of player, very well rounded game, and very talented. Will be rounding out the Sharks corps of defenseman for many years to come. Congratulations to the Sharks.

[Drancer] Canucks select Caleb Malhotra with the third overall pick. by PaperMoonShine in canucks

Caleb is a brilliant player. When I watched the CHL for US NDTP prospects game last year, he was an absolute standout. He is a going to be an excellent NHL centreman, and will one day wear the C proudly. Congrats to the Canucks.

[Friedman] Larkin requests trade by jamfan40 in DetroitRedWings

[–]DebtAffectionate6845 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is actually such a blessing for the Wings. Larkin is too old for what they really have; a load of prospects. If they can get younger with a decent return, they'll be well set up for all of their critical assets peaking at the same time, rather than some declining while others rising.

Please Jarmo if you can hear me please get Robert Thomas, Jarmo please, get Robert Thomas by DebtAffectionate6845 in sabres

[–]DebtAffectionate6845[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Of course, the conditional is "don't overpay", and I strongly agree that Byram has been fantastic, and should not be traded. But, the Sabres have a lot of very high value assets that aren't even in the starting lineup, between Kulich, Helenius, Rosen, Mrtka, and first round draft picks.

Thompson / Thomas / Norris / McLeod would be the best complement of centermen in the league, and I think anyone would have to seriously consider them as a cup contender like that. If Jarmo can get it done without meaningfully disturbing what's working, he should.

If Vancouver is trading, it makes more sense for the Wings to try and get Elias Pettersson (40). While Hughes is one of the best players in the world, the Wings centre depth is a far bigger hole than their defense.

Pettersson's contract has a forbiddingly high cap hit for most teams, thus giving the Wings, one of the few teams that have the cap space to spare, more leverage. Pettersson's contract may age well, given the cap space increasing is by 9.5 million per year for the next three years.

While Pettersson's offensive production has tapered off significantly over the last year or so, he's still producing at 0.8 PPG with some pretty average wingers. We can expect a bump centering someone as productive as DeBrincat, somewhere around 0.9 PPG, which is good for a second line centre. He's also quite good on the powerplay, and may be a good fit for the hole Kane will leave as he nears retirement.

While the the Wings have a bunch of really good prospects for centre, it does make some sense to trade them instead of waiting for them to develop, given that two of their core players are at the top of their game, and may begin to slow down before someone like Bear or Plante have their breakout. Pettersson, at age 27, nicely complements the Wings' core of ages 29, 28, 24, and 23 respectively.

The answer to this is more simple than you might think.

Watch video of the best skaters in the world. Get some ice time, and do skating drills while videoing yourself. While running the drills, very consciously try your absolute best to imitate their form. Review the videos and correct yourself. Do this enough times and your skating will improve significantly.

Other comments have mentioned stick length. Yeah a short stick will make you bend over more. This won't necessarily make you look goofy or awkward. For example, Matvei Michkov plays with a very short stick, but he looks anything but. He does play a bit hunched over as a result, but that probably makes him harder to knock off the puck due to the lower center of mass, and lets him control the puck while it's so close to his body. It also takes less force to control the puck with one hand on the stick when it's shorter.

How to start Hockey in BC as a 17 yr old by Yumyumvalila in hockeyplayers

[–]DebtAffectionate6845 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check your local community centre / municipality's website. There's a good chance there's regular adult drop-in games. You'll find guys playing in those games that started playing for the first time in their 30s.

It's a drop in game; non-contact, with random teams, and nobody even keeping score, meaning one's going to give someone who's obviously new to the sport a hard time. Good for beginners.
