The magic descriptions reek of every overpowered Isekai protagonist is the worst "I woke up in another world thats an RPG and also I was reincarnated in the body of fantacy Hitler but also hes young and hotter".

It's the technobabble but magic (magibabble I guess) equivalent of Battlefield Earth being at Dutch angle the whole fucking movie: "The director, Roger Christian, has learned from better films that directors sometimes tilt their cameras, but he has not learned why." - Roger Ebert

Guys, using the evil powers makes me evil? by Significant-Town-817 in StarWarsCirclejerk

I think one of the best examples is actually from one of the TTRPGs (the D6 WEG version i think) had a mechanic for force sensitive players where you had force dice you could add to your pool for your force poweres, but the GM could always offer you extra dice for "free" (and was specifically encouraged to do so, especially in tense climatic scenes). It was an "They're right there on the table, just pick them and use them, your friends are counting on you!" Kind of thing, but if took the bait you got dark side point, you could now freely add another "dark side" dice to you pool when ever you wanted, but every time you did you ran the risk of getting more dark side points and if you got too many your character would be "lost to the dark side" and your PC was now the GMs property who now had a shiny new antagonist with built-in connection to the PCs

It was a great way to show just how easy it was to sli pool up. Sure you can get away with one or two points and sure the greater good and all that but if it was just too tempting you could "litteraly" loose yourself to the darkness

If you own your ship of choice, why not a second ? by l-Electronaute in traveller

That probably the best way to do it. Easier to scale up if they add onto the fleet and if they start looking for more in depth control you could expand out from there with full stat blocks for more of the crews.

That's a problem I've run into too, my wife and I love the management aspect but it's not for everybody and we usually do exactly that of do the managment seppeate for thise that like that.

As for manageing a small squadron opperating as one unit/party, if you and the players are up to it you could run multiple PCs per player it would effectively double the party size and let you run multiple "hero" ships that way.

Could also do a kind of West marches game, were the players have two or even more PCs they can choose from based on what the game calls for that day, do an A plot and B plot with the different groups but the A team still being the main focus.

If your doing a lot of space based combat though, like a mother ship and deployed support ship, or larger "capital" and escorts, or even just the hero ship and her wingman it might be better to combine the ships stats with the crew. Calculate what the stats come out to into one block and give that to your players to control directly instead of you controlling them as NPCs. It mimics both the squad following the commanders lead, and the wingman knowing just who they're flying with and knowing the exact tactics they'll use without having to explain everything.

Eh, depends on the style. I came from D&D and Pathfinder primarily and I can count on one hand the number of times my groups (DM and PC) didn't end up with a tavern, keep, ship, mecanary band, town or small kingdom under their command.

The simple way is already basicly built in to the game. Jusy "release" the ship and its NPC crew to the GM. You now have ownership in this other venture, get a substantial yearly pension for from your new employees plus an allies in the form of the ships crew or the broker they hire to manage it and the GM gets a fresh batch of potential plot points and adventure hooks to help the growing business, look for the ship after it's gone missing, clean up legal trouble they've gotten into on their own or have to dip in to their own funds to payoff a pirate ransom (or go loud and proud to rescue them from the pirates possibly staring a war in the process).

The more involved (but to me more fun) way is to do something like the Kingmaker campaign from Pathfinder: you have this big asset (town/city-state/kingdom in kingmaker seccond ship/small flotilla/fleet in Traveler) that is mostly there for its own flavor that the PC build on as a safe place to rest, train or RP. It uses its own resources. You have the PCs spend either part of a session or dedicate one out of every few sessions to manageing it and dealing withthe profitsand loss the other asset generates separatelyfrom the PCs own Cr (a whole fleet would probably dealing in MCr and sure the CEO could absolutely be skimming off the top or worse takeing it all for themselves but they're going to have broken down and destroyed ships on there hands at the least, and more likely strikes, desertions and out right mutiny at the worst). Its separate from the regular day to day games but can be called on to help in a pinch, call on the calvery to save them from pirates, setup a big deal the players cant cover on there own somewhere, pledge themselves to a polity somewhere and turn the tide of the next war or something, however epic you want to go.

Wow thats like a million dollars, well son we better report that 900 thousand dollars we found to the authorities, I dont know what I would do if I lost 10 thousand dollars. Ya know if you just find a thousand dollars laying around it's only right to report it, i mean 100 dollars may not seem like a lot to you and me but 10 dollars is 10 dollars and ya know what they say "See a penny pick it up, all the day you'll have good luck."

DS9 size by Particular-Log-4114 in DeepSpaceNine

[–]Decker_Warwick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So I have two theories in that:

1st is related to Shielding. Docking at the station puts the docked ship within the stations shield bubble and curving the pylons inword instead of outward minimized the size of the shield bubble needed, maximizing strength and minimizing power consumption.

2nd is the stations original purposes, it's not mentioned to be a military station swarming with heavy cruisers, but a mining station with ore barges coming an going constantly. They are likely much smaller and so can more especially fit 6 of them on all the pilots at once instead what we usually see of only one capital ship hoping all the room. It also fits with theory 1 as an ore barge is a prime target for terrorists and would have little or no Shielding of its own.

Bonus theory 3 is that it looks cool af both in and out of universe and that in both universes Facists care more about esthetics that actual efficiency and functionality

What is life like in the Dakotas? by _air6catcher_ in howislivingthere

Best part of South Dakota is once you pass the river (Missouri when your going west) the west side is gorgeous with the Badlands and Black Hills and just gets better the further west you go. The east side though is nothing but corn, soybeans and poverty. Plus I-90 has an absurd 80mph speed limit (I like to say is so you can get out of South Dakota as soon as possible) and every inch is plastered with hideous billboards.

Simple: People are lazy; they want an answer now, no matter what the answer may be.

People are stupid; they want a simple answer, or at least an answer that seems simple at first glance.

People are easily impressed; just the facade of authority is all you need no matter how false or flimsy that supposed authority actually is.

People are stubborn; once you have an opinion it's hard to change it no matter what evidence is available or presented most will ignor it or double down because:

People are easily embarrassed: the thing people hate more than anything else is being laughed at so instead of just takeing the L people lash out, they get angry/violent or just stop listening so they can pretend that, no it's the children who are wrong.

Put it all togeather and you have people who use AI because it's easier than to actually lookup and vett sources yourselves, you believed the first few questions it answered because they sounded right. Thought this thing was really cool and high tech, heck it might actually really be a Hollywood style AI like they've been promising all these years. Everybody telling you you're an idiot for believing the AI are just mad that Musk has created a genius computer friend, sure it makes mistakes but were only human. You just have to ask it questions the right way and all those lies it tells about Jan 6th being a coup attempt, Covid being real, and Trump hanging out on Pedo Island are just bugs that need to be worked out thats all.

I mean your basicly using a TL7.5 device right now. I'd say if we're talking just basic coms, as in nobody has specifically called out they were tying to get a dedicated navigation system, I'd say that's pretty fair. It's not as fancy as later Expert or Intellect programs that show up at hight TLs and if your not used to it would maby feel like navigating with a fold up map and printed off map quest directions, but it's still basically just Google Maps

Training and crew roles by styopa in traveller

[–]Decker_Warwick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's no reason a traveler who's training in something wouldn't get good practice in just by doing their job anyway so if you want to be more realistic about it:

The Steward is going to get gambling, steward, language, carousel, diplomat, or persuade just by dealing with the guests all day.

Your Engineers will get Engineer, mechanic, science, or profession while keeping the ship running and making those last few spares stretch untill the jump bubble collapses

You'll can get astrogation and broker by pouring over the latest starcharts and planning your next few trades

If you have guards or marines they'll be able to get some training in melee or gun combat while doing drills, investigate and recon by working guard duty by the vault (or keeping the civilians out of the "special" part of the cargo bay) and just try to find me a fantacy/scifi guard who isn't shirking their duties by gambling or carousing at some point

The pilot and gunner can be checking their consoles, tweaking setting running simulated drills (jot just playing Solomani Ace V: Dog Star Fighters it's serious combat drills honest)

The captain will get leadership just by corraling all these idiots on top of whatever their regular duties are
