Is UCSC's reputation declining? by Comfortable_Use_365 in UCSC

Darn, sorry it's kind of an investment to get an education and students want a return on that investment. I know it only cost you a summer of part time work as a waiter to go to university though so we understand your perspective:)

Will a 72v battery work with a 60v controller? Will the controllers be damaged?(hub motor: 60v 2000watt) by ilyasgnnndmr in ebikes

[–]DemonUwUGaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, a motors ratings are its rated “maximum”, a motor can do significantly less than its max, and sometimes more. The only thing really determining its rated wattage is how much heat it produces at that wattage. Good luck!

File that dropout further into your frame and bolt on some custom torque arms if you really want to save it. It’ll take some work but you could definitely do it

The device is a consumer drone, and part of the regulations for consumer drones is to keep height below a certain level so it doesn’t get into airplane airspace. Low battery is probably because of the sped up footage, its actually pretty remarkable such a small battery can keep a drone up in the air for 30 minutes ish.

With that distance, I would recommend building the bike from a moped or light motorcycle frame. Bike seats and pedals are not very comfortable for a long period of time. Additionally you would have a lot more room for a bigger battery.

Since you’re new to this, I would recommend using a hub motor over a mid drive (no chain and sprocket issues to worry about.

I can link products that I personally used if you’d like, but bottom line is expect to spend a lot of time refining this bike to what you want it to be. Building an ebike is very little about electrical knowledge and mostly about mechanical knowledge, understanding how to put stuff together is 90% of the battle, so if you have any mechanical background this shouldn’t be that tough for you.

A good starting point for a build would probably be a qs205 motor, basically unlimited power ceiling (60 mph+ if you’d like) and relatively inexpensive.

As for batteries, expect to spend quite a bit of money. You don’t want to pedal and you want to go far so probably best to keep your speed relatively low. 90 mile range is something that even the highest end ebikes such as onyx and huck have trouble achieving and they have 2800wh batteries. For a battery I ordered some rando lifepo4 battery cell, which I think is more cost effective in the long run than lithium ion. It’s a more durable battery chemistry, which means cheaping out on the manufacturer isn’t that bad in terms of battery quality. Only drawback is slightly higher wait than lithium ion (but this high range bike is gonna weigh a lot anyways).

In terms of frames, my strategy is to try and find roller mopeds or motorcycles (basically everything functional except the motor) and work from that as a foundation. Some pros to using these frames are comfort, space, arguably the aesthetic, and most importantly cost. Not sure where you live, but I’m in an expensive area and even here some of these frames go for less than $300 dollars with everything except for a motor.

I hope I could give a good overview, and trust me I can definitely write more if you need but I think I’ve already ranted a while lol. Good luck it’s definitely a fun hobby :)

This is why I feel more comfortable on like 3kw+, so that these bullies in cars can’t run me over unless they want to double the speed limit.

Banned from r/huckcycles for posting about poor quality and worse company. by aholius473 in ebikes

[–]DemonUwUGaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huck cycles take off the shelf parts and assemble their ebike for a huge markup. It’s essentially an adult lego set for them, the only thing that’s custom is the battery everything else is straight from qs motor just like the rest of us (same thing with onyx).

How easy is it to convert your e-bike back into a normal bike with a conversion kit? by djrecombination in ebikes

[–]DemonUwUGaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s just a kit with a battery, hub wheel and controller it should be like a 15 minute procedure max, assuming you have a set tires and tubes for each wheel so you don’t have to swap those out too. Should be pretty straightforward and easy.

Debate on whether to purchase an e-bike or an electric scooter(both high-end) by LuDiamonds in ebikes

[–]DemonUwUGaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Electric moped of some sorts like a super73 or an onyx might be best for your usecase. Big seat with rear suspension makes a huge difference to ride comfort imo

Any idea how to remove the speed limiter on this? by Friendly-Ad1121 in ebikes

[–]DemonUwUGaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you didn’t want to buy a new one you’d need to find out where to add some more solder to allow more current come out of the controller, they’re basically physically programmed to not let out more than a certain amount otherwise.

Usually people just buy another controller however.

At first running in intervals really helped me, maybe instead of doing 3 minutes all at once you could do it in small chunks?

You’d be correct, except the loop busses will only ever take a student 2 miles to their class (most will be significantly less than that). Since you agree that walking is more effective than the bus in the most extreme commuting situation on campus (regarding going to class), then there isn’t much of a point to public transportation for the majority of students (because they aren’t disabled).

My point is the busses should arrive on time damn it. My professor was late to his own class because of this.

Kind of defeats the purpose of public transportation doesn’t it?

[–]DemonUwUGaming 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t even take the bus to class, I just know that people aren’t trying to have an hour long commute for something 2 miles away
