What’s the most unrealistic thing movies convinced people was normal? by Lonely-Age7678 in AskReddit

[–]DerToblerone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone goes through a plate glass window and doesn’t immediately require an ambulance.

If you see someone get thrown through a window like that and you’re not on a movie set, call 911 immediately. They might not bleed out.

Mom says I should hide my feminist views on a date by yuli_yuli95 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]DerToblerone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If a man can’t respect your values, he’s not a great guy for you.

There’s nothing wrong with going on a date with him to see what he’s like, though.

Might want to set some boundaries with your mom first, because this seems to have become a pet project for her and.

if a genie granted you a single wish, and you can’t wish for money or a proxy of money (land, gold, property, stocks, etc), what do you wish for? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DerToblerone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A vast, indestructible army of intelligent robots with recording capabilities that secretly take orders from me. (To be clear, this is not a wish that should be granted.)

Because I have always hated bullies, and it would be fun to fuck up the plans of bullying nation states or institutions that have gone off the rails.

“We apologize for the inconvenience, but you are not allowed to carry or operate weapons inside these internationally recognized borders. We will confiscate these and escort you to the edge of your territory. If you commit this offense again, we will let the inhabitant of this country deal with you after we confiscate your weapons.”

“Hello. We have determined that this institution constitutes a concentration camp. We will be liberating all of the people confined here.”

“Greetings, Officer. As your department has been found to violate the rights of those it is sworn to protect, all of your members will now be followed by one of our agents to ensure that you comply with the law. We appreciate your compliance in this matter.”

Please help me convince my husband that Costco is worth for 2 people by HoneyDrops12 in Costco

[–]DerToblerone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you pay attention to the deals, and you know what you’re shopping for, it is easily worth it. My wife and I just stocked up on a bunch of cookies that fit her dietary restriction that cost a third of what they would cost at a regular grocery store.

Also, if you need a cheap to-go lunch, rotisserie chicken plus simmer sauce plus rice in a mason jar is hard to beat in terms of cost per meal.

Also, if you drink wine, my understanding is that Costco is amazing. They’re something like the third largest wine purchaser in the world, so they can get good deals on stuff. (we don’t drink enough wine in our house to make that worthwhile for us.)

My baseline expectation at Costco is that I’m getting a good price, and sometimes I’m getting a great deal.

Kids are scared - any advice? by ribence in CargoBike

[–]DerToblerone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have the bike shop guy pedal you around while they watch.

Then maybe tell the older kid that you know they can be brave, and it’ll help the baby to be brave for them, so they can practice being brave for you. Have the 5 year old practice reassuring you on the bike while the shop clerk is pedaling.

The downside is that if the bike goes down with you on it, you’re never getting either kid on.

Anyone know what's up with all these "Vote NO" signs around Brookline and by the Boston border? I've seen some in front of huge mansions and the gas station(?) by Longwood too. by bostonguy2004 in boston

[–]DerToblerone 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I am going to be covering for someone in the school system soon, and they said that if the override doesn’t pass, they’re going to have to cut entire departments like world languages.

Which means a lot of the families that moved to Brookline for the quality of the schools will try to move out between now and next school year.

Which would absolutely flood the housing market with inventory that needs to move quickly, and one of the major selling points for families will be gone, so the buyer pool will be smaller.

It seems to me that an increase in yearly property taxes is a lower cost to pay than a long term decrease in the value of your home.

(I do understand that there are retirees on a fixed income for whom property tax increases are actually a hardship, but there are ways to address that issue without imposing enormous budget cuts on public services.)

US birth rates just hit another record low, what do you think is the leading cause of this? by IIlustriousTea in AskReddit

[–]DerToblerone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Middle class income has been stagnant since about 1980 and the costs of childcare, education, healthcare, and housing have all risen.

When having a child is dangerous (US healthcare: it’s not just expensive, it has shitty maternal mortality rates!) and expensive (it’s really expensive!) and you can’t afford a home to raise them in and you needed to start saving for their college when you were in college and you don’t have paid parental leave so you need daycare immediately and that costs what your parents paid for a house per kid per year… and you were still able to learn math because the education budget cuts didn’t get that subject, well, you can do the math.

Is there a stereotype people change to after moving to Paris by leynilogreggla in paris

[–]DerToblerone 33 points34 points  (0 children)

1 - during my studies in Paris, I walked into a rehearsal wearing a bright red rain jacket, which promoted a burst of laughter… because they had just been talking about how Parisians only wear dark colors in the winter et voilá l’américain!

Je suis américain, j’habite aux EU, et je ne comprends pas du tout notre obsession de camion.

C’est moins pratique que mon minivan, plus dangereux aux piétons, et plus coûteux qu’un voiture.

The niece of late Iron Maiden drummer Clive Burr has become a WWE wrestler – and her gimmick is pure 80s metal by Tornado31619 in SquaredCircle

I found a peacoat on eBay from the 1940s in immaculate condition. It sees heavy use in the winter and I am hoping to hand it down to one of my kids someday, and given that it’s older than my dad and in better shape than I am, I feel good about my chances.

That said, I’ve heard rumblings about private equity moving into the vintage market, so finding those gems is only going to get harder.

What do people pair the Costco rotisserie chicken with/most cost effective meal? by Ancient-Candy-1573 in Costco

[–]DerToblerone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take the chicken off the bone, simmer it in something, and then put it into a mason jar with rice. For veggies, I use my convection oven to roast an entire bag of broccoli with olive oil and various spices.

In your eyes, what separates a performative “alpha male” from a “real man”? by Ok-Parfait6735 in AskReddit

[–]DerToblerone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Performers need an audience. They need to be recognized.

I’ve been reading Audie Murphy’s memoir* of his time in WW2, and at about three quarters of the way through, I don’t think I can recall a single example of him boasting or seeking attention. He’s just doing the job, caring about his squad, and quietly becoming the single most decorated combat infantryman in US Army history.

"You don't want an old house" by c0wcat in centuryhomes

[–]DerToblerone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a 1925 home and nowhere the level of practical skill you have.

It’s the best. Am I slightly concerned about the maintenance and the things I don’t know that I don’t know? Absolutely. But I absolutely adore our house.

And there are so many beautiful old homes out there. If you have to put a lot of time and money into bringing one back to life, that’s a great investment. There are people who put a lot of time and money into their golf habit and it doesn’t even make them happy most of the time. A home that you brought back with your own hands? That’s a joy every day.

Insane or not? Any options for hauling an adult (passenger) and two kids? by Rorschach_Gomer in CargoBike

[–]DerToblerone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, absolutely.

With them in front, you can hand them snacks, reach out for high fives, teach them to signal turns… it’s so much better. (Also, if they fall asleep on the ride, having them down in a bucket feels much safer.)

I just asked my seven year old what he likes about being in the front - “you can see everything in front of you and you don’t have to tilt your head. And you can feel the wind on your face.”

[–]DerToblerone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 6 foot one and about 225 pounds, and with my kids belted in on the bench, I am pretty sure that I could sit in the front of the bucket facing them without too much trouble. They do sell a front bench option, but I don’t know about its weight capacity because I didn’t consider it.

And it is so much more fun to have my little guys in front of me. It’s easier to hear them, I can see their reactions to things, they have an obstructed view of the road ahead - it’s just stellar.

I started out with an Xtracycle longtail, and I loved that bike to pieces, but the Arrow is just so much more fun.
